The freehanging descent will astound you - but that's only the beginning. Spend the day walking, wading and swimming through the cavernous passages fo this huge cave system.

waitomo glowworm caves new zealand
The Enchanted Glowworm Caves of Waitomo
Deep underneath the hilly landscapes of North Island, New Zealand is hidden an amazing cave lit with glowworms.
The Waitomo Glow-worm Cave is home to thousands of glow-worms that light up the cave ceiling like a starry night sky. This species of glow-worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, which is found exclusively in New Zealand, emits a blue-green glow that illuminates the underground cave river. Though, the glow-worms aren’t really glow-worms. They’re fly larvae. And what causes the glowing? Excretory organs. These insects produce a silk-like thread used to trap flies and other bugs for them to prey on. And the hungrier they are, the brighter they glow.
The cave system was first extensively explored in 1887 by English surveyor Fred Mace and local Maori Chief Tane Tinorau. However, the local Māori people had known about the caves for quite some time. Tourists started visiting in 1889 when Tinorau and his wife began leading tours. Today, many of cave guides are descendants of Tinorau and his wife.
Location: The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located in the southern Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand, 12 km northwest of Te Kuiti.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
This is it, we are finally leaving Queenstown and heading for the Southland region. Our first stop and base for the next few days is Te Anau – the gateway to the Fiordland National Park.
When we arrive in Te Anau, we check in at the Real Journeys office and board our cruise to the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves. There, we board the boat and cruise out to the western shores of Lake Te Anau and the Te Anau Caves. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are one of the best things to do in Te Anau.
Inside the Real Journeys building at the caves, we get a quick presentation on the lifecycle of the glowworms before heading in small groups into the caves.
A walkway leads through the Te Anau Glowworm Caves to waterfalls, trout pools and close-up encounters with glow worms. Then we reach a small boat for an opportunity to float right underneath a whole ceiling of glowworms. Right here is one of the best places to see glow worms in New Zealand.
After seeing the New Zealand glowworms, we make our way back out of the caves and into the forest of the Fiordland National Park where we learn more about the bird native species.
So what do you think of the Glowworms in Te Anau? Would you see the Te Anau Glowworms in New Zealand? LUK in the comments!

HOBBITON WAITOMO CAVES AUCKLAND WAIKATO MATAMATA NEW ZEALAND TOUR DRONE TICKET ONLINE BOOK TRAVEL
The Hobbiton Movie Set was a significant location used for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film series. It is situated on a family run farm about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) west of Hinuera and 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of Matamata, in Waikato, New Zealand, and is now a Tolkien tourism destination, offering a guided tour of the set.
The Hobbit
The original set was not built to last, the hobbit hole facades having been constructed from untreated timber, ply and polystyrene and partially torn down after filming. In 2010, the set was rebuilt in a more permanent fashion for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, filming for which began in 2011. Ian McKellen reprised his role as Gandalf the Grey and was joined on the Hobbiton location by Martin Freeman, who remarked that the site just looked like a place where people lived and where people worked.
Visitor centre
Guided tours of the 5.5 hectares (14 acres) movie set site commenced in 2002 and continue to be provided daily. The two-hour excursion is very popular, and advance bookings are recommended.
Highlights of the tour include Bagshot Row, the Party Tree, and Bilbo's Bag End home. There are now 44 hobbit holes on view although it is only possible to enter a few of them, all of which have small, unfinished, earth-walled interiors. (The interior of Bag End was shot in a studio in Wellington). The hobbit holes on site have been designed and built to one of three different scales. In addition to the smallest ones built to the correct size (hobbits are smaller than humans), some are built to a larger scale to make the hobbit actors appear smaller, and some have been constructed in a dwarf scale for scenes containing dwarves.
Refreshments are available at The Shires Rest Cafe prior to or after tours. Breakfast and indeed Second Breakfast is served. In 2012 the Green Dragon inn (a replica of the Green Dragon that featured in the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies) was opened on the set. There is now also a store selling merchandise and souvenirs adjacent to the cafe and evening events commenced in 2014. The tours have generally received good reviews (although not all are complimentary) and in 2013 the set welcomed its 500,000th guest.
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand. It is known for its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand. This cave is part of the Waitomo Caves system that includes the Ruakuri Cave and the Aranui Cave.
The attraction has a modern visitor centre at the entrance, largely designed in wood. There are organized tours that include a boat ride under the glowworms.

Feast Of Tabernacles New Zealand 2013
God’s plan for mankind involves restoration. The Feast of Tabernacles symbolizes the restoration process.
Chronicling the activities of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry, the book of John points out that when the “Feast of Tabernacles was at hand,” Jesus Himself “went up to the feast” and taught at the Temple in Jerusalem. This was done in observance of the final of three annual Festival seasons that are outlined in the Bible, particularly in the book of Leviticus.
In 2015, the Feast of Tabernacles will be observed from September 28 through October 4 and the Eighth Day on October 5.
These three seasons, the Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Pentecost and the Fall Festival season, were all observed by Jesus and the first-century Church. The latter season is capped by the seven-day Festival of Tabernacles and the Eighth Day (Leviticus 23:33-36).
As part of the United Church of God’s commitment to follow the example of the first-century Church, we keep these days, even though they are essentially nontraditional in today’s age and not largely observed by other religious organizations.
This same commitment leads members of the United Church of God to observe a seventh-day Sabbath on Saturday as Christ did.
From a biblical perspective, the Feast of Tabernacles pictures the coming time when Jesus will return to earth and directly rule the world for 1,000 years.
As the Feast of Tabernacles represents a coming time of unprecedented harmony and peace, we conduct this annual eight-day event with a strong family focus. Accordingly, members and families take part in daily church services and a whole range of positive family-based activities throughout the Festival.
This eight-day Festival represents the prophesied fulfillment of the coming Kingdom of God, which Jesus taught about extensively during His earthly ministry. The annual festivals observed earlier in the year by the Church represent the Christian’s redemption from sin through Christ’s sacrifice, the commitment of Christians to put sin out of their lives and the coming of God’s Holy Spirit to strongly empower a Christian to live life in harmony with God’s law and prepare for eternal life.
United Church of God members and families will travel to dozens of Feast of Tabernacles sites around the world to take part in this biblical assembly. Church members traditionally observe the earlier festivals in their local areas. However, proper observance of the Feast of Tabernacles requires that members reside in temporary quarters (called “booths” or “tabernacles” in the Bible – Leviticus 23:42).
The Church rents large conference centers or facilities to accommodate daily worship during the Festival, and members typically stay in nearby hotels to fulfill the temporary nature required by the biblical command. Staying in a temporary dwelling such as a hotel underscores the transitory nature of this present world and illustrates how it will be replaced by the prophesied Kingdom of God.
The emphasis placed by Christ on the coming Kingdom of God is intense, and Church members accordingly take the opportunity to observe this Festival very seriously.
Because the Feast of Tabernacles occurs during a nontraditional time when vacations and school absences are not common, the Church encourages members and families to notify employers and schools well in advance of their plans.
This helps minimize misunderstandings and to obtain school assignments and other information. This way Church children don’t fall behind in academics while they are briefly absent from school to observe the biblical festivals with their families. The vast majority of teachers and administrators are very cooperative across the United States in helping students prepare for their brief absences to observe the biblical festivals.
In New Zealand, The Feast of Tabernacles 2013 was held at Hillside Hotel & Nature Resort in the beautiful Taupiri Ranges, in NZ's Waikato Region, approximately 45 minutes south of Auckland International Airport.
Many top NZ tourist attractions are located within an hours drive. Among these are: Hobbiton in Matamata, Waitomo glow-worm caves, Rotorua's geothermic region, Raglan by the Sea, Cambridge and Auckland. Taupo and the Coromandel are less than two hours drive. You could also just stick around the Resort for fellowship and enjoying NZ scenery and walks. Hamilton is 20 minutes away. There is a lot to see and do in the Waikato Region

The Hiking New Zealand and Active Earth Adventures team shares your passion for outdoor adventure, for the road less travelled, for the wonder that can only be found in the untouched wilderness.
For over twenty years, our team of outdoor fanatics have been exploring great walks, hidden treasures and magical nooks and crannies and sharing them with like-minded travellers like you.
Whether you are a seasoned adventurer who runs off-road marathons on the weekends and has a month to explore a new corner of the world, or a keen walker who wants to make the most of a hard-earned week away from the office, we can match you up with your wilderness trip of a lifetime.
Our guides know day-long rain-forest rambles that feel a million miles from anywhere or we can take you on a weeks-long hiking, camping and kayaking trip to remote and breath-taking landscapes.
It’s time for an adventure!
