Dominica is my top favorite island in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. Here we took a hike through the rainforest on the Waitukubuli.
The Waitukubuli National Trail
Dominica, the Caribbean's Nature Island, is looking to share its beauty with hikers through the development of a 115-mile cross-island walking trail. The Waitukubuli National Trail - named after the Carib Indian name for Dominica - is a major initiative by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, in partnership with the Regional Council of Martinique and funded by the European Union.
The Waitukubuli National Trail is divided into 14 continuous sections. Hikers can expect to cover its entire length in two weeks, or just choose individual trail segments to enjoy. The trail passes through mountainous landscapes and rainforests, showcasing the rivers and waterfalls for which Dominica is famous and taking visitors into the heart of local communities.

Perdu Temps Trail - Jungle Bay Resort & Spa, Dominica
Perdu Temps is a historically and ecologically significant trail from Dominica's southeast to the south. In earlier times subsistence farmers traversed this route to take their produce to the Roseau market. The Jungle Bay hike covers the southern half of the trail to a self sustaining organic farm in the Mountains. This is an opportunity to experience traditional Dominican life in its purest. Waitukubuli National Trail runs zig-zagging from south to north (or v.v.) passing lots of dence rain forests.
Dominica is very green (and wet!), with rivers for every day of the year (about 365, quite a bit for such a small island)
While hiking, it was difficult to find a flat spot of 2 m2 to pitch up a tent / tarp. Most of Dominica is mountainous, so steep!
This is one of the reasons you don't find mass tourism here, there is no flat space to build the runway for an internetional airport. Beautiful, isn't it???

This small volcanic island has many names but they all point to a place of unmatched charm, incredible beauty and dramatic terrain features that has been left preserved and unspoiled in its quiet corner of the Caribbean. With several peaks over 4,000ft, it also boasts one of only two World Heritage Sites in the Eastern Caribbean - Dominica's Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Starting at sea level the trail goes right through the heart of the park and climbs up the island's highest peak, Morne Diablotins, 1447 metres (4747 ft).
Geographically, Dominica is distinctive in many ways. The country has one of the most rugged landscapes in the Caribbean, covered by a largely unexploited, multi-layered rain forest. It is also among the Earth's most rain-drenched lands, and the water runoff forms cascading rivers and natural pools. The island, home to rare species of wildlife, is considered by many as a beautiful, unspoiled tropical preserve. According to a popular West Indian belief, Dominica is the only New World territory that Columbus would still recognize.
The Waitikubuli Trail is just now complete and completely traverses the rugged Caribbean island of Dominica. The local Carib people are looking forward to welcoming international runners with open arms and lively spirits. They are excited to showcase the trail and all that the island has to offer visitors at Dominicas first 100k ultra run and 100 mile trek.
We have been granted special permission by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MOAF) to stage an international Trail Race in late 2011.
More details are on their way. 50k and 25 k distance will also be offered.

Hiking the Waitukubuli National Trail in Dominica - Segment 6
This was day 6 of my Waitukubuli National Trail through hike in Dominica on November 30, 2012. I started the day in Castle Bruce, finished the last portion of Segment 5, and then hiked the whole Segment 6.
The trail was muddy and slippery since I had rained all morning that day.
For the interesting parts, fast forward to 1:35 and 7:05.
This part of the trail is a slight downhill, and it's about 1-2 kilometers before the end of the segment at Hatten Garden.
I ended up completing the whole trail in 13 days.

If you think Caribbean holidays are all about sun, sea, sand and cocktails, then think again. For travellers to the island of Dominica, the attractions lay mainly in the interior, exploring its stunning natural features.
Dominicas rugged landscape makes it a haven for hikers, with trails of varying levels through volcanic valleys, lush rainforests, past cascading waterfalls and even a Boiling Lake. With very little flat land and so much pristine rainforest, the best way to explore Dominica is on foot.
A new long-distance walking trail is currently under development which will traverse the entire length of Dominica and highlight to walkers exactly why Dominica is known as The Nature Island. Known as The Waitukubuli Trail, after the Carib Indian name for the island meaning tall is her body, the trail will stretch 115 miles and take around two weeks to complete. The Waitukubuli Trail is set for completion in the next year, but many sections can already be enjoyed.

Dominica Drone Flight: Dominica is a mountainous Caribbean island nation with natural hot springs and tropical rainforests. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is home to the volcanically heated, steam-covered Boiling Lake. The park also encompasses sulphur vents, the 65m-tall Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. To the west is Dominicas capital, Roseau, with colorful timber houses and botanic gardens. Down the coast is Champagne Reef, a snorkeling destination where gas bubbles emerge from the shallow sea floor. Nearby is Soufriere village, in a volcanic crater bay with hot springs on its pebbly beach and coral-covered underwater cliffs offshore. Inland is Wotten Waven, a mountain village with thermal baths among tree ferns. Cabrits National Park, in the north, is home to Fort Shirley, once manned by 18th-century British colonialists.
