Path of the Gods and Positano Beaches | Italy Days 7 & 8

Our final two days in Positano were spent hiking the amazing Path of the Gods, dinner with a view, beach hopping, and trying to relax a bit. Positano is absolutely beautiful and we really enjoyed our time there (steps and all!). Next up: Rome!

The Best Hike in the World is Italy’s Path of the Gods

The Amalfi Coast in Italy is simply one of the most beautiful places on earth, with its unique beaches, stunning fresco style houses and gorgeous views. It also has lots to offer if you like boutique shopping and delicious Italian food. What some people might not know is that the Amalfi Coast is also home to one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Il Sentiero degli Dei also known as The Path of Gods is a 3 hour hike along the epic coast line. The surroundings of the hike are full of natural beauty with blooming Mediterranean vegetation, isolated farms and really cool old houses that are slowly decaying by the forces of nature. Ep 24 Hiking The Path of the Gods Amalfi Coast above Positano, Italy (Sentiero degli Dei)

- We hiked the path of the gods from Nocelle above Positano to Praiano. It was a 4.5 hour beautiful hike. We ventured out in the middle of the day in our FiveFinger vibrams shoes. This hike offers spectacular views of the Amalfi coast including views of the island of Capri in the distance. Il Sentiero degli as it is called in Italian is one of our favorite hikes in the world and definitely worth the effort.

Its name already recalls the mythological landscapes of the Greek Olympus and, for sure, no other name could describe better the amazing view offered from this mountain trail. From this trekking path, situated half way up Mount Sant'Angelo a Tre Pizzi (with three peaks) it is possible to admire one of the most striking panoramas of the World: an incomparable overview from the Cilento (province situated South of Salerno) to the Island of Capri.

It is a walking track between the towns of Agerola, Praiano and Positano, at an average height of 500 meters above sea level and it offers a memorable challenge within the local environment.

The suggestion is to start from Bomerano, a district of the town of Agerola situated at 650 meters above sea level, and walk along the path to reach Nocelle, a small district above Positano at approx. 2 ½ to 3 hours walking distance.

The first site to visit along this nature trail, coming from Bomerano, is the Grotta del Biscotto (at 524 meters above sea level), named after its geologic conformation, similar to the shape of a biscuit bread (typical product of Agerola).

The pass of Colle Serra, situated at 578 meters above sea level, halfway point, reachable also from Praiano, but in this case walking back towards Bomerano, is where the pinnacolo is located. This is where a memorial tablet has been placed to remember Giustino Fortunato, who gave the name to this trail.

The surroundings are a continuous blooming of the Mediterranean bush, a mixture of chestnut trees, holm oaks, alders and corbezzolo trees. With some luck it is possible to catch sight of one of the peregrine hawks that live here.

The last stretch is a path rich of uphills and downhills that end up in the district of Nocelle (420 meters above sea level), a small rural village, from where it is possible to reach the main road SS 163 walking down 1500 steps towards Arienzo or continuing the walk towards Montepertuso, another uphill district of Positano, from where it is possible to catch a small local bus down.

il Sentiero Degli Dei: Traversing Italy's Path of the Gods

Clinging precariously to the stunning southern cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, il Sentiero Degli Dei - or Path of the Gods - is an ancient and unbelievably scenic trail connecting the small Italian mountain hamlet of Bomerano with the neighbouring village of Nocelle. From there, it's a 500 meter descent to the beach town of Positano where you can enjoy a refreshing plunge in the Mediterranean before making the return journey to Bomerano, a roughly 20km commitment round trip with a little over 1000 meters elevation change.

This makes for a pretty lengthy day trip, especially if you want to spend some time relaxing at the beach (which you will), but it's hands down one of the most memorable hikes we've ever done.

Join me for a hike up to the iron cross on top of the mountain above Nocelle.

I give you clear instructions on how to do this yourselves if you want to hike in Positano and want an alternative to the busy Path of the Gods.

Or if you'd rather join me from your sofa, just sit and watch!

From Piazza Mulini in Positano you can catch a bus up to Nocelle at 20 past every hour (in season).

I would advise against walking up to Nocelle and doing this hike.
I would also advise that you wear proper footwear NOT flipflops or sandals. (Yes, I have seen flipflop wearing tourists in bikinis on the Path of the Gods and it just looks, and is irresponsible and stupid)

day5: Walk of the Gods

Our day began with a walk to a local dairy to see the production of traditional Campania cheese, and then on along the Walk of the Gods from Bomerano to Positano. We returned by boat to Amalfi and then coach back to Bomerano.

Positano Italy, Path of the Gods

Don't get me wrong we love the outdoors but this hike was something else stretching for about 4 hours downhill and bits that were uphill. This was everything and more.
Not for the faint hearted for sure. We being the cautious scaredy cats that we are were amused by how many times we nearly missed falling off the ledge.
The Path of the Gods hope you take the leap and visit, we loved it.

The Path of the Gods|Positano to Amalfi|Il Sentiero degli Dei

The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) on the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful walks in Europe, with incredible views over the sea far below, and the cliffs above. It has become a very popular hike, being a manageable 9km, particularly when followed downhill from Bomerano above Amalfi in the direction of Nocelle above Positano.

Unfortunately, like so many beautiful and popular places, it has now become a victim of its own success. I would highly recommend avoiding the walk on weekends and public holidays unless you’re happy to be surrounded by bellowing groups of hikers.

Beautiful Tour of Positano, Italy in 4K

This just may be the most beautiful walk you've ever seen. This was filmed on September 22nd, 2018. The walk begins high up on the hill and walks down the Viale Pasitea to the beaches below. There are captions mainly during Part 1 of this walk. The rest of the walk only has a few captions. During this video you will walk past the villas of Positano as well as Positano's luxury hotels. I filmed the walk using a Gopro Hero 7. The audio was recorded using Roland CS-10EM In-ear Monitors connected to an H1 Zoom mic. ????For an even more immersive experience, be sure to put on your headphones and listen in 3D audio.
