Kelly: When it comes to holidaying by the ocean, location is key. And today I’m checking out a deluxe camping experience that offers tranquility and rugged beauty right on your doorstep. Overlooking this stunning stretch of coastline on Yorke Peninsula is Hillocks Drive. If you imagine Yorke Peninsula as a leg, then Hillocks Drive is just under the big toe, not far from Marion Bay. I’m here to check out the first “ocean pod” to be installed on the property– think of it as a cross between a large caravan and the inside of a luxury yacht. As property owner Pam Bennett explains they’re quite unique.
Pam: They’ve been developed specifically for Hillocks Drive, and they’re made from metal and fibreglass (by a very artistic man who lives at Warooka). (The property is a farming property, as well as a tourist business.) In the tourist business we run a holiday rental the homestead which sleeps 12 people, this ocean pod and there will be 2 more ocean pods being built, and they will have a good as view as this one does.
70 bush camping sites are dotted along the coast at Hillocks Drive, but I think a pod provides the ultimate beachside home away from home … Inside you’ll find a comfy bed and ensuite bathroom, an extra bunk and a complete kitchen. Outside there’s a BBQ and also a great fire pit area for that quintessential campfire experience!
But I must say, the main drawcard for me is I’m just steps away from picture perfect Butler’s beach.
They’ve named this ocean pod ‘Poolside’ and for good reason. Take a stroll along the sand and you’ll discover an irresistible natural low-tide swimming spot.
Pam: This is a really popular pool to swim in.
Kelly: How beautiful. It’s so clear.
Pam: It’s beautiful, it’s quite deep. And there’s lots of marine life that lives in the pool, which is quite rare along the coastline. We come and have people do surveys in this rock pool.
Ahhh…yes. What an idyllic spot… It’s not hard to picture myself here for a few days: swimming, lazing on the beach, fishing and just taking in these wonderful Yorke Peninsula views.
Pam: The pod looks at Kangaroo Island, which is directly south of the pod, we’ve got beautiful views of Hillocks Point that is quite close and then behind Hillocks point you can see Stenhouse bay, Marion Bay, Cape Spencer, and the Althorpes Islands, so the lighthouse on Althorpes Island you can see really clearly at night time.
Kelly: Ah that was stunning, the most incredible view, just a beautiful walk and amazing scenery. It’s lovely here, time for a cool drink.

The Yorke Peninsula is a peninsula located north-west and west of Adelaide in South Australia, Australia, between Spencer Gulf on the west and Gulf St Vincent on the east. It has geographic coordinates of 34°21′S 137°37′E. The peninsula is separated from Kangaroo Island to the south by Investigator Strait.
Yorke Peninsula was named by Captain Matthew Flinders, R.N., after the Right Honourable Charles Philip Yorke (1764--1834) (later Lord Hardwicke), narrowly beating French navigator Captain Nicolas Baudin (who preferred the name 'Cambaceres Peninsula'). Charles P. Yorke came from a very distinguished political family (his father had been Lord High Chancellor and grandfather had been Lord Chief Justice, Speaker of the House, and Lord High Chancellor), and had a lengthy political career of his own, serving as Member of Parliament (1790--1810), Secretary of State for War (1801--1803), Home Secretary (1803--1804), and First Lord of the Admiralty (1810--1812).
Before white settlement around 1840, Yorke Peninsula was the home to the Narungga people. Today the descendants of these people still live on Yorke Peninsula, supported by the Narungga Aboriginal Progress Association in Maitland, and in the community at Point Pearce near the northern end of Gulf St Vincent.
Principal towns include the Copper Coast towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo; farming centres of Maitland, Minlaton and Yorketown; and the port of Ardrossan. A number of smaller coastal towns are popular destinations for fishing and holidays, particularly from Adelaide. The south-western tip is occupied by Innes National Park.
Yorke Peninsula is a major producer of grain, particularly barley. Historically this has been sent out by sea because there are no rail services. Most coastal towns on the peninsula have substantial jetties. In the past these were used by ketches, schooners, and later steamships, to collect the grain in bags, and deliver fertiliser and other supplies. As roads in the region improved, and freight-handling techniques changed from bags to bulk, this became obsolete. A deep-water port was opened in 1970 near the south-eastern tip at Port Giles to export grain in bulk, and almost all the other ports ceased to be used for freight in the 1950s and 1960s. The only other ports with bulk-handling facilities are Wallaroo at the north-western side, and Ardrossan at the top of Gulf St Vincent, also used to ship dolomite from a nearby mine for OneSteel. Maitland has a grain-receiving depot operated by AWB, serviced only by road.

Point Turton South Australia
We spent an awesome week at Point Turton Caravan Park where Dani and Malcom are unbelievably welcoming and helpful. They told us about some awesome spots to check out. They have sites overlooking the jetty where we spent our time swimming, snorkelling, sun baking on the pontoons and jumping off the jetty.
Within walking distance is the local Tavern overlooking the water and its only a short drive to a brand new Nature playground.
We visited Magazine Bay, Levins Beach and had our first crabbing experience.
Flaherty's Beach was stunning and you can drive all the way from Point Turton to Hardwicke Bay on the beach and play in the sand dunes and crystal clear waters.
We used it as a base to visit nearby towns such as Port Vincent, Edithburugh, Honiton and Minlaton which also has the Watsacowie Brewery.

Moonta is a town on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia, 165 km north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide. It is one of three towns known as the Copper Coast or Little Cornwall for their shared copper mining history. The centre is about 17 kilometres south of Kadina, site of Wallaroo Mines, and 14 kilometres southeast of the port of Wallaroo. The name Moonta is reportedly derived from munta-muntara or moontera, an Aboriginal word for thick scrub place or impenetrable scrub.

Description
Coobowie Floods 004.AVI
Numerous properties were completely underwater, 8 to 12 inches higher my home would be a write off as a result of Minlaton councils severely inadequate planning, like Queensland, insurance do not cover floods.
There is a remedy and that is not to lay concrete gutters without storm water runoff infrustructure, so that surrounding areas can absorb storm water run off and also build speed humps into the 2 roads, level with the levee so that flash floods do not channel down hill into Coobowie via these two roads.
A speed hump would serve another purpose to reduce speeding vehicles, many very elderly seniors rely on electric buggies on the roads and visiting tourists on walks
