Ireland - Most Beautiful Village - Adare
Adare - Ireland . April 2016 . Music: Kevin MacLeod
Adare - considered the most beautiful village in all Ireland. Its lies on the banks of the River Maigue set in the surrounding forests. The village was built in the 20 years of the 19th century, the Third Earl of Dunraven (1812 - 1871), owner of the estate Adare Manor. The main street lined with neat stone building with thatched roofs and still preserved remains of some religious buildings - e.g. The Church of the Holy Trinity, Franciscan abbey or Augustines. Above the bridge over the river stands the castle from the 13th century Desmond Castle.
Ireland #6 - Glendalough, Russborough, Wicklow Mts., Avoca Handweavers, House Cafe en Seine
Monday, August 4th - Trip to Glendalough, Russborough and Avoca hand-weaving, Cafe en Seine
This bus ride was a 9 to 5 affair. Our first stop on this bus tour was the Russborough estate, a magnificent Georgian mansion with the longest frontage in all of Ireland. This means it is a very long house.
The art work within was interesting, and so was the story of Alfred and Lady Beit, who were the later owners of the place. Our guide, Matty, told us that this wealthy couple had actually opened the property to the public while living there in one of the wings. They chatted with visitors and appeared to have had a non-snooty attitude.
Next, and the main point of the trip, was a visit to Glendalough, a very scenic place down south in the Wicklow Mountains. It is the site of St. Kevin, an early Christian leader and has several buildings that date back from 800 to 1200 a.d.
The parking situation upon our arrival was inauspicious, but it soon improved. So many busses were trying to jam into the tiny parking lot, that we had to park up the road. But once inside the park there, the walk along the lower lake trail was serene and delightful.
After about an hour's amble, we headed back and encountered about 3,000 tourists coming in the opposite direction! But we'd had our peaceful communing-with-nature time, so a little Times Square action at the finale was not a problem,
We enjoyed a great dinner and weaving demonstration at the village of Avoca before heading back to Dublin. Our guide, Jillian, was very helpful, articulate and knowledgeable.
In the evening, we went for a run and walk in St. Stephen's Green. I sprinted some of the time, and it felt good to kick out the jams. My recent thigh injury did not rare up, though I ran like a demon! Later, I paid for it with leg aches, although I did not suffer another injury. Martha and I took Advil to soothe our muscles, and all was well.
Finally, we headed out for live music. A gent at nearby Bruxelles bar said they had no live music that night, but he recommended a place called Cafe en Seine, which did. We enjoyed a kind of singer-plus-one concert by a Sinatra-type singer; Martha knew all of the words ad I knew a few. Great fun! The decor in this Cafe is, in my view, out of this world.
