Walkersville Southern RR and More (October 16 2016)
Another Sunday, another day out! Yer' bullfrog doin' it again!
Today we explore the property of the Walkersville Southern RR who operate from their namesake town to a point a few miles north of Frederick MD. The tourist runs were over for the day, but the folks running the RR museum there were kind enough to keep it open for us to have a look around.
The line from Frederick to Taneytown was all Maryland Midland RR at one time. In the 90s the section from the MD 26 crossing (now paved over) north to a point south of Woodsboro was sold to the WSRR. Fortunately the state paid to repair the Monocacy River Bridge, giving WSRR some trackage to operate over, and the rest is-as they say-history.
When Dolly and I rode the line in 1982/83 it was still Maryland Midland. Some European conglomerate took over what remained of the MM after they gave the south end to WS, and ended all their tourist runs. Prior to that, MM was a family operation.
Despite all the changes, great seeing the line again, not having been in Walkersville since 1983! There's a classic photo edited in of Dolly buying our tickets at the station window! She hasn't changed a bit.
Then to Woodsboro to the north, and fortunately that station is also still there. Both stations are typical of PRR suburban stations. The station in White Hall MD resembled there stations-before its removal. Also of interest-on the south end, at one time, this line connected with the B&O Frederick Branch, now served by MARC! Can you envision MARC running to Walkersville?
Then, the 'scenic' route home, through Union Bridge and Westminster MD. On the way to Walkersville, I attempt to visit Gravity Hill, a slight upgrade in the road that defies logic! Nowadays, all the traffic on that road precludes one giving the hill a try.

A Scenic Silver Anniversary
In September of 2013, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad held a special weekend party to celebrate 25 years of service!
With three operating steam engines, a night photo session and a full weekend of excursions, the railroad gave attendees a show they'd never forget!
In this program, we'll first follow Tank Engines #6 and #75 as they pull short trips to various points on the WMSR. Then, the real show begins as WMSR's own steam locomotive - #734 - tackles the mountain on her way to Frostburg, Maryland!
We hope you enjoy this video tribute to the Wild and Wonderful Western Maryland Scenic Railroad!
