Aveiro is a city on the Portuguese west coast founded next to a lagoon known as Ria de Aveiro. It is distinguished by its canals navigated by colorful boats (moliceiros boats), traditionally used for the harvest of algae. Not far from the center, known for its Art Nouveau buildings, is the Sé de Aveiro, with its prominent bell tower. The Aveiro Museum, housed in a former convent, has an extravagant tomb made of marble.

Side Trip: Portugal, Aveiro
About an hour south of Porto by train is the charming small city of Aveiro on the Atlantic coast. It is called the Venice of Portugal with several canals featuring colorful tourist boats.
While in Aveiro, you can try great seafood as well as the local egg yolk confection Ovos Moles. Besides walking around the town and general enjoyment, there is a nice former cloister/monastery, which has been turned into a museum - the Monastery of Santa Joana.
In this video, I take you to the canals, a seafood lunch at O Augusto and for a stop at the Monastery, followed by a hearty dinner at Abadia in Porto with a few stops to admire street art. Please make sure to like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video.

The Virtual Tourist walks around Costa Nova near Aveiro in Portugal
Porto Portugal in 4K Walking Tour
This is a virtual tour from around Porto Portugal. This is one of the most amazing cities I have ever seen in Europe. I would have to say after reflecting on my visit to Portugal, Porto was the most memorable and amazing place I went and that says a lot. Sure there are other places around Lisbon like, Sintra and the south of Portugal but Porto, being located on the river has so much charm. In this video we explore the Ribiera, some markets, wine taste, explore downtown Porto, explore the bridge crossing for the train and so much more!

Aveiro, Portugal, May 2017
Aveiro is a charming Portuguese town that makes for an enjoyable, alternative tourist destination. The town has an extensive history which is closely intertwined with the growth and decline of its port and saltwater lagoons. Aveiro is crossed by canals and along these waterways colourful and traditional fishing boats sail.
As Aveiro has both canals and gondolas the town is sometimes referred to as the Venice of Portugal.
