Hanoi, Vietnam Old Quarter walking tour
Hanoi's Old Quarter is one of the great destinations in Asia, densely packed with open store-fronts, lots of people, scooters buzzing by, many cheap places to eat, historic buildings and friendly people. The Old Quarter of Hanoi is often known as the 36 streets, but in fact, now there are more than 36 streets, each one providing rewards for the intrepid visitor. 35. The old quarter is different from other places in Hanoi. Preserving the houses in the old quarter is very necessary, and according to the plan, the Hanoi people committee are planning to preserve the old houses in the old quarter, so it can keep the original state. However the planned renovations might change the existing historic character, so you better visit soon to get this authentic old-fashioned experience.

Hà Nội - Walking in Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi (UK: /(ˌ)hæ-, həˈnɔɪ/ ha-, hə-NOY, US: /hɑː-/ hah-NOY; Vietnamese: Hà Nội [hàː nôjˀ] (About this soundlisten)) is Vietnam's capital and second largest city by population (7.7 million in 2015). The city mostly lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,720 km (1,070 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City and 105 km (65 mi) west of Haiphong.
From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945). In 1873 Hanoi was conquered by the French. From 1883 to 1945, the city was the administrative center of the colony of French Indochina. The French built a modern administrative city south of Old Hanoi, creating broad, perpendicular tree-lined avenues of opera, churches, public buildings, and luxury villas, but they also destroyed large parts of the city, shedding or reducing the size of lakes and canals, while also clearing out various imperial palaces and citadels.
From 1940 to 1945 Hanoi, as well as most of French Indochina and Southeast Asia, was occupied by the Japanese empire. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). The Vietnamese National Assembly under Ho Chi Minh decided on January 6, 1946, to make Hanoi the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War.
October 2010 officially marked 1,000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 6.5 km (4.0 mi) ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion.
On July 16, 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) presented the title “City for Peace” to Hanoi.

Hanoi Vietnam nightlife 2019 - walking around The Old Quarter
Walking around The Old Quarter of Hanoi on weekend nights, to experiencing a different tradition can be hard to adapt, but very interesting as well.
The busy roads are blocked at night. No cars or any other type of transportation is allowed during night. The locals and tourists are free to roam the streets of the weekend night. The only noise you would hear is that of the crowded streets with people and music.
This walking street opens from 7p.m on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

Walking Tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter | LIVESTREAM VIETNAM #3
It felt good to Livestream again! And apologies for the end of the video getting cut off. Happens sometimes when doing mobile phone livestreaming.
So this walking tour was of Hanoi's famous Old Quarter, the oldest area of Hanoi with origins dating back more than 2,000 years!
It's also the most condensed area of Hanoi, with over 70+ streets and alleys, and tons of shops selling everything from bamboo ladders and silk pajamas to egg coffee and world-famous street food.
My livestream of Old Quarter does it no justice, it's just one of those places that you need to see and experience yourself!

Hanoi Old Quarter walking tour part 1
Continuing our walking tour of Hanoi, Vietnam, in the Old Quarter, a fascinating place. We visit the main food market and walk the busy streets of this well-preserved old section of Hanoi, Vietnam's capital. The tour is conducted for free by which is an organization of volunteers, mostly college students, who take visitors on free walking tours. We can admire one of the gates entering into the Old Quarter area. This gate is named Ô Quan Chưởng, and this is one of the heritage of Hanoi. In most of Vietnam villages, there's often the gate into the village. Street food is very popular in the Old Quarter because the space in the Old Quarter is quite small, so people can often sit on the pavement and sit at the small table.

Hà Nội - Walking around 36 Streets - Old Quarter, Hanoi, Vietnam
The Old Quarter (Vietnamese: Phố cổ Hà Nội) is the name commonly given to the historical civic urban core of Hanoi, located outside the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. This quarter used to be the residential, manufacturing and commercial center, where each street was specialized in one specific type of manufacturing or commerce.
Another common name referring to approximately the same area is the 36 streets (Vietnamese: Hà Nội 36 phố phường), after the 36 streets or guilds that used to make up the urban area of the city.
As the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, Hanoi’s Old Quarter has a history that spans 2,000 years and represents the eternal soul of the city. For those who visit Hanoi with a genuine desire to have a grasp of the city’s culture or a curiosity to travel back in time, Ha Noi Old Quarter is a must-go place that they definitely should not be missed by any means.
Located in the middle of Ha Noi, a rapidly developing city where changes take place every hour, Ha Noi Old Quarter with its old-styled narrow streets full of antique brick houses seems to nostalgically resist the flow of time while still actively trying to adapt to the dynamic atmosphere of the modern city.
Interestingly, Old Quarter is also known as the “36 Streets” because of the famous streets that make up the place, all named for the type of goods or service they were originally known for. There are streets which are named for selling silk, shoes, jewelry, etc.
Some of these streets still retain their original purpose so don’t be surprised when foreign tourists come across streets with most or all stores selling similar stuff or service.
Foreign tourists say: “Difficult to Walk, but Fascinating to Observe”. The Old Quarter is the heart and soul of Hanoi – there is so much going on here at any one time, your head is spinning. Life spills out of the homes onto the sidewalks, creating a fascinating scene, but also making walking through the area frustrating and not very safe, as you are forced into the streets where the motorbike hordes run you over. The heart of the Old Quarter is around the lake, where you can find more touristy restaurants and shops – much of the rest of the area you will find more local places, with tiny stools on the sidewalks serving Pho or small run-down cafes. These areas are not for everyone, but even if you don’t want to duck in and try some street food, it’s interesting to see. Nice to pick a particularly active area and sit with a beer and watch the chaos of Hanoi go by.

(From wiki):
The residential and commercial area that is now the Old Quarter came to be during the Lý and Trần dynasties and was then located east of the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long and along the Red River. During the Lê dynasty, scholar Nguyễn Trãi already mentioned some of the areas each specialized in one particular trade. It was then surrounded by a defensive wall with several gates.
During the Lý and Trần dynasties, many people from the surrounding plains migrated to the city and settled in what is now the Old Quarter, creating the densest urban area of the city. The Lê dynasty period saw an additional influx of Chinese immigrants who arrived to trade, creating several Chinese neighbourhoods..
When the French ruled over Vietnam, they partially rebuilt the area. This period saw many French and Indians settling there to conduct business. Two small markets were demolished to make place for Đồng Xuân Market. Furthermore a tramway was constructed through the quarter.
The area is still the commercial heart of Hanoi.
