A Tour of Hobart CBD, March 2019
On my second trip to Hobart and Tasmania in general, I delve into the compact central business in more detail. Beginning at the visitor's centre on the corner of Elizabeth and Davey St, we explore Elizabeth St Mall, and walk along various inner city streets such as Macquarie, Collins and Murray St, go through Salamanca Place, the waterfront area, and the old warehouse district around Hunter Place. Hobart is a small city that's big on charm, and has preserved more historic buildings per capita than any other Australian capital. A walkable city that's a joy to explore.

Hobart | Tasmania Travel Diary
Sometimes it takes a while to see the wonders in your own backyard. This was my first trip to Tasmania, the tiny island state off the south east coast of Australia. Its capital Hobart is a harbour city for food lovers that buzzes on weekends, with the famous Salamanca Market stretching for miles, and the edgy art gallery MONA attracting an international audience.

Hobart City Video Guide | Expedia
Hobart is located in Tasmania, Australia’s southernmost state.
Originally an infamous penal colony, Hobart is a place where the old and new meet, right at the edge of a pristine wilderness.
The waterfront is where early settlers first stepped ashore, and today the docks make a perfect place to start your adventures. Visit Australia’s oldest brewery, which is still in business today.
The Maritime Museum is a great place to gain an insight into just how important the ocean has always been to this remote place. Help set the rigging, trim the sails, and take a turn at the helm of the Lady Nelson.
A short stroll from the waterfront is Salamanca Market, a local institution for over 30 years.
Learn about the great southern wilderness and those who tried to conquer it at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. For artwork of a more controversial nature take a ride upriver to Mona - The museum of old and new art.
South east of Hobart is Australia’s version of Alcatraz, the convict settlement of Port Arthur.
Don’t leave the city without a trip to the top of Mount Wellington, where you can imagine Hobart as it was 200 years ago.
It’s clear from the moment you arrive that this old city now beats with a young and creative heart.

City Description:
Hobart, capital of Australia's island state of Tasmania, sits on the River Derwent. At its fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses host galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district with narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages. The city's backdrop is 1,270m-high Mount Wellington, with sweeping views, plus hiking and cycling trails. The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), built into underground galleries, exhibits art of antiquity along with contemporary works. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery focuses on Aboriginal heritage, local history and native wildlife, with notable colonial-era displays. Established in 1818, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens highlight native plants. North of the city, the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rescued animals including Tasmanian devils, wallabies and kangaroos. Popular day trips include Port Arthur, a 19th-century penal colony preserved as a historic site, and rugged Bruny Island, known for its coastal wildlife.

Weather and Events:
Australia's most southerly state has a temperate climate. The island receives an influx of visitors, many in search of outdoor pursuits, during the summer school holidays (Dec-Jan). In the days after Christmas, yachts arrive in the capital, at the end of the renowed Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. In Feb, The Royal Hobart Regatta is an action-packed festival with sailing, rowing and swimming races, plus music and fireworks. Winters (Jun-Aug) are cool and wet, with snow in the mountains. Cascades Female Factory Hobart | Walking Tour | Steadicam
Hobart's Cascade Female Factory is an intimidating place. My Great Great Grandmother went through this system in the 1830's. It was quite an experience to walk where she walked.
#convicts
Cascade Female Factory:
The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant historic site associated with female convicts. It was a purpose built, self-contained institution intended to reform female convicts and is the place to discover the stories of Australia’s convict women.
Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left, due to high rates of illness and infant mortality. Visiting the site today can be both emotional and rewarding, creating a connection with the stories of female convicts in Australia and their children – stories that are often tragic, but that also inspire hope and resilience.
It is located in South Hobart, a short distance from the Hobart waterfront and CBD

Australia - Tasmania - Hobart, Mount Wellington & Boat Trip
In the second video instalment from Tasmania we head up to the top of Mount Wellington, the views of Hobart and the surrounding area were absolutely breathtaking... as was the icy cold wind. After a visit to the Shot Tower at Taroona we headed back to have a walk around the port in Hobart. The following day we visited a replica of Douglas Mawson's Hut which houses a fascinating museum about the his Antarctic expedition, after that we headed out on a great boat trip with Finn from Pennicott Wilderness Journeys.
