Walking the Battle of Ypres
Historian Mat McLachlan explores the town of Ypres, scene of some of the bloodiest fighting of the First World War.
In this exclusive documentary, Mat explores the rebuilt Cloth Hall, a chapel that was built as a shrine to lost soldiers, the Menin Gate Memorial with its 54,000 names of missing soldiers, secret rooms in the town's ramparts, a beautiful waterside cemetery and a very special commemoration service that has been held every night for nearly a century.
Visit battlefields.com.au to walk through history with Mat on some of the world's great battlefields. And tune in to his weekly Living History podcast (available on iTunes and Stitcher) to hear fascinating interviews, visits to historic sites and book and movie reviews, all bringing history to life!

The Menin Gate, Ieper, Belgium
A brief walking tour of the Menin Gate in Ieper (Ypres), Belgium. The walls enclosing the main road area, where the Last Post is sounded every evening at 8pm, is full of the names of those who died in World War One around Ieper but have no known grave.
The video shows how the list of names continues up short stairways either side of the main gate and up onto the top, outside wall of the memorial.
The Gate lists over 54,000 names, significantly more then the entire population of Ieper (approx 36,000 in 2004).
Please take a look at Video History Today , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.
The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.
Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

Hill 60, Ieper (Ypres) Belgium
Hill 60, so named because of the map contour around the site, is located about 2 miles south east of Ieper. In the Great War, its height and location made it a focus of fighting on the Ypres Salient.
Of particular note, although not so clear in this 2D video, is the current undulating nature of the preserved Hill 60 site. It is full of concrete bunkers but also vast areas of mine and artillery craters.
No doubt, Hill 60 was both an important location to hold militarily but a damned awful place to hold and live.
Corrections to commentary:
1. I keep saying Hill 62!! This is Hill 60.
2. I have been advised by Simon (Belgium) that the large above ground bunker seen in this video is Aussie made not German.

The Battlefields from Above | WW1 France & Belgium | DJI Phantom Drone/Osmo Handheld
This is a short edit from my recent trip to the WW1 battlefields in Belgium and France in June 2017. Hopefully there will be a few more videos to follow this one giving a bit more detail about some of the places we visited along with some more footage.
I have been to some of these locations before, but the ability to get a birds eye view of some of the locations makes them even more breathtaking than I could've ever imagined.
Before filming in these historic locations I checked with the relevant authorities for permission to fly the Phantom at these locations. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) agreed that I could fly; whereas it is strictly forbidden at all the Canadian Memorials in accordance with Canadian National Park rules.
Locations in this video (not in the order they appear);
- Vimy Ridge (Canadian National Memorial)
- Tyne Cot Cemetery [The largest CWGC cemetery in the world]
- Thiepval Memorial to the Missing (of the Somme) [The largest CWGC monument in the world]
- Toronto Avenue Cemetery - CWGC
- Mud Corner Cemetery - CWGC
- Prowse Point Cemetery* - CWGC
- Hyde Park Corner Cemetery & Royal Berkshire Extension - CWGC
- Spanbroekmolen Mine Crater (Pool of Peace) - Talbot House
- Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery - CWGC
- Lone Tree Cemetery - CWGC
*An interesting point to note is that Prowse Point Cemetery is the only WW1 cemetery the Ypres Salient to be named after a person and not a place. This is due to the heroism of Major Charles Prowse. It is also the location of where the 1914 'Christmas Truce Game of Football' took place.
More information about the Royal British Legion can be found at
Thanks to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for allowing me to film at these locations. Check them out here
