MADURAI Food Tour - Idiyappam (Rice Noodle) - Ragi (Finger Millet) Puttu
South India is the one place where you get some of the tastiest and healthiest street food. Yes, healthy! Our trip to Madurai was truly enlightening and beautiful. After our trip to Jallikattu, where we experienced Pongal celebrations with the locals and got to taste some amazing food, we made our way to the city.
Beginning our journey in the Spice Bazaar along with our lovely host Praveena, we visited S V Sweets. Here, we tried a sweet dish called Adhivarasam which is made from a rice flour and jaggery, shaped like a doughnut and deep fried like one too. As very well put by our host, “it is shaped like doughnut, tastes even better.” This is an authentic Tamilian dessert and is sold only for Rs. 6. So if you’re in the mood for some desi style doughnuts, this is your best bet!
Our next stop was Gopu Iyengars Tiffin Centre. This place is a century old and is known best for its Vellai Appam. Located right next to the Meenakshi Temple, this 100 year gem serves its meal traditionally on Banana leaves, that are easily disposable as well as hygienic. The vellai appam is made with rice flour and urad dal and served with coconut chutney, sambhar and a super hot green chilli chutney. The food in Madurai in general is quite hot and pungent, and according to the locals the philosophy behind so much chilli in such hot weather is that ‘you have to eat the heat to beat the beat.’
When in South India, you just cannot ignore a good cup of filter coffee. We went to Visalam Coffee Bar for some delicious and strong filter coffee. This is the kind of coffee that will wake you up from any kind of stupor.
We next walked to a shop called Burma Idiyappam Shop, serving idiyappam from the same spot for 42 years. Idiyappam is made from rice flour that is pressed into noodle form and is topped with coconut shavings and sugar. The dish is super light and healthy, since there is zero oil in it and it is steamed. Later in the day we tried Keppai Puttu, which is basically ragi that is shaped like a cylindrical cake and steamed, then it is topped off with coconut shavings and jaggery. We also tried Keerai and Keppai Vadai. The Keerai Vadai is made with a special kind of herb known Mullumurungai, which is mixed with rice flour and the deep fried. The Keepai Vadai is made with ragi or finger millet, shallots, green chillies and curry leaves, and the deep fried as well. Despite being deep fried in oil the vadai is super light and is not heavy on the palate at all.
We visited the Meenakshi Bhavan for their Special Rawa Dosai that is made with sooji or semolina, carrots, cashews, pepper, chilli, jeera and a bit of desi ghee. The dosai is super crispy and has a beautiful nutty texture to it. What is even better is that it is served with quite a few chutneys so one can take pick and choose between them. Finally we went to Sree Sabreesh for the Adai Avial. This two part dish is truly mouthwatering. The adai is a very healthy lentil dosai which is served with avial- a vegetable dish stewed with a variety of spices and coconut milk. For dessert we tried the Paal Pandiyaram, which is rice balls in sweet coconut milk.
Our journey came to an end with a super healthy, nutrient rich banana. Eating a banana after a heavy meal is a tradition here, so we obliged. Our special thanks to Praveena from Foodies Day Out, it was an absolute pleasure to be in the company of someone who loves and appreciates food as much as we do.

Madurai Food Tour - Madurai PAROTTA - Egg PAAYA - Fishlette (Fish Omelette)
Welcome to the food capital of Tamil Nadu. We had the good fortune to taste a number of unique dishes on our trip down south. So come and discover along with us the delectable food of Madurai.
There are a number of places in Madurai that are just serving cold drinks to battle the hot weather of the region. One such drink is Elaneer Sherbet which is made from coconut water, coconut cream, some syrup and ice. We then visited Sun Lemon Tea Stall, where ironically we had Sukku/Chukku Malli Coffee. This unique drink is supposed to be a cure for cough, containing dried ginger, coriander seeds and fenugreek.
Along the way we tried a few sweets that almost like candies. Sweets like javvu mithai, thaen mithai, sooda mithai or elandha pazham are available in a lot of shops on the streets. Our next stop was Kavannah Parotta Kadai in Natham. Here we tried the iconic deep fried parotta which crushed and topped with mutton gravy and some pieces of dry or chukka mutton along with mint chutney. The crispy and flaky parotta goes perfectly well with the melt-in-the-mouth mutton pieces and gravy.
Later we visited the flower market in Madurai where we tried Valakkai/ Vazhakai Bajji or Plantain Fritters. The plantains are coated with a batter of chickpea flour and spices and then deep fried, the perfect evening snack. We then went to Rani Vilas for some paniyaram omelette, served with rice, mutton, bone marrow and some chutneys. Here we also tried Ratha Poriyal, a dish prepared with goat's blood. After that we tried an interesting drink called Koozh. Another cool porridge drink to enjoy in the hot weather.
We landed at Ajmeer Mahal for quite a wholesome meal. Here we had the ceylon parotta that is very similar to the bengali mughlai parantha; Vazhiyal whoch basically scrambled eggs with spices; and kothu parotta, a blend of minced parotta pieces with curry leaves, onions, spices and eggs. For some more refreshments we went to the KRK Milk Depot. We sweetened our mouth with some milk halwa and some rose milk and badam milk.
In the evening we tried an interesting chaat called egg paaya, which is made from mutta bonda/egg bonda, onion samosa, pattaani gravy and topped with onions. A very refreshing and spicy dish. For all the fish lovers we discovered paradise. At PSA Fish, you get everything that lives in water. We mainly tried Tandoori Fish and prawns, Prawn biryani, fish fingers, fish omelette and a lot more. Finally we came to an end of the food tour with a nice cup of strong coffee at PTR Tea Stall and Snack Bar.

World Trip Madurai City in INDIA
Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal | Madurai Mahal | Nayakkar Palace | India Walking Tours
Thirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th-century palace erected in 1636 AD by King Tirumala Nayaka, a king of Madurai's Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623–59, in the city of Madurai, India. This Palace is a classic fusion of Dravidian and Rajput styles. The building, which can be seen today, was the main Palace, in which the king lived. The original Palace Complex was four times bigger than the present structure. In its heyday, the palace was considered to be one of the wonders of the South. This palace is situated 2 km south east of the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The Nayaks of Madurai ruled this Kingdom from 1545 until the 1740s and Thirumalai Nayak (1623-1659) was one of their greatest kings notable for various buildings in and around Madurai. During the 17th centuries the Madurai Kingdom had Portuguese, Dutch and other Europeans as traders, missionaries and visiting travellers. Over a span of 400 years many parts of the buildings were suffered much by time, and not inconsiderably... by the destructive effects of war; a few, however, are sufficiently in repair to be converted into use by the garrison, as granaries, store-houses, powder magazines during time of East India Company. King Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson had demolished much of the fine structure and removed most of the jewels and woodcarvings in order to build his own palace in Tiruchirapalli. However Lord Napier, the Governor of Madras, had partially restored the palace in 1866-72, and the subsequent restoration works carried out several years ago, today, we get to see the Entrance Gate, The Main Hall and the Dance Hall.
Built in 1636, as a focal point of his capital at Madurai, Thirumalai Nayak intended the palace to be one of the grandest in South India. The design and architecture is a blend of Dravidian and Islamic styles. The Interior of the palace surpasses many of its Indian contemporaries in scale. The interior is richly decorated whilst the exterior is treated in a more austere style.
After independence, the Thirumalai Palace was declared as a national monument and is now under the protection of the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. This palace is open for the visitors from 9am to 5pm and the entry ticket price is Rs.10.
Many films are shot in the Palace, primarily due to the large pillars present.
Notable films are Maniratnam's Bombay (Kannalane song), Guru (Tera Bina Song) etc. Vikram starrer Bheemaa (Ragasiya Kanavugal song)
Light and sound shows
The palace is well equipped to perform light and sound shows depicting the story of Silappathikaram both in Tamil and English languages.
The Palace is located in the eastern side of the city, around 1.2 km South East of the Meenakshi Amman Temple in the city of Madurai. Madurai being a popular tourist center is well connected by railways and has daily flights to Colombo (Sri Lanka), Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.
9.00 AM to 5.00 PM for general visit. Lunch Break: 01.00 PM to 01.30 PM
Sound & Light Show Time: 6.45 PM to 7.35 PM in English
8.00 PM to 8.50 PM in Tamil

A walk through Madurai town - TamilNadu - South India
Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the pre Christian era. The glory of Madurai returned in a diminished form in the earlier part of this millennium; it later on came under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom after its ransack by the ravaging armies of Delhi (Malik Kafur). During the 16th and 18th centuries, Madurai was ruled by the Nayak Emperors, the foremost of whom was Tirumalai Nayakar. The Sangam period poet Nakkeerar is associated with some of the Tiruvilayaadal episodes of Sundareswarar - that are enacted as a part of temple festival traditions even today.
The Sangam age or the Golden age of Tamil literature -- produced masterpieces way back in the Pre christian era and in early 1st millennium . Madurai was the seat of the Tamil Sangam or Academy of learning. The entire city of Madurai, is built around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple -- the temple par excellence. Concentric rectangular streets surround the temple, symbolizing the structure of the cosmos.
Many people come to Madurai to visit the famous Meenakshi Temple and the Jallikattu but the real high points of Madurai life you will find on the countryside and around the temple in the city.

Madurai's Most Famous Temple | Meenakshi Temple | Tamil Nadu, INDIA
Today we go for a walk around the Meenakshi Amman temple complex in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This is an awe-inspiring sight to see and one of the finest examples of a south Indian Hindu temple. Unfortunately, no possessions are allowed inside the temple so we were unable to get any footage of the interior.

Meenakshi Temple Madurai India, Ancient Hindu Architecture *HD*
Madurai, Tamilnadu, India : Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple or Tiru-alavai is a historic Hindu temple located in the south side of river Vaigai in the temple city of Madurai. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Meenakshi and her consort, Shiva, named here as Sundareswarar (beautiful deity). The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city of Madurai. The complex houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 45-50m in height, the tallest being the southern tower, 51.9 metres (170 ft) high, and two golden sculptured vimana (shrine) over sanctum of the main deities
There is an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple and it was in the list of top 30 nominees of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
The temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonary walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. Vishwantha Nayaka allegedly redesigned the city of Madurai in accordance with the principles laid down by Shilpa Shastras(Sanskrit: śilpa śāstra, also anglicized as silpa sastra meaning rules of architecture) relevant to urban planning. The city was laid out in the shape of square with a series of concentric streets culminating from the temple. These squares continue to retain their traditional names, Aadi, Chittirai, Avani-moola and Masi streets, corresponding to Tamil month names. Ancient Tamil classics mention that the temple was the center of the city and the streets happened to be radiating out like lotus and its petals. The temple prakarams(outer precincts of a temple) and streets accommodate an elobrate festival calendar in which dramatic processions circumabulate the shrines at varying distances from the centre. The vehicles used in processions are progressively more massive the further they travel from the centre. The complex is in around 45 acres (180,000 m2)

100 Golden years of MADDUR VADE I Karnataka Food Tour I Indian Street Food
Maddur is synonymous with Maddur Vade, the iconic century year old snack. I made a train trip to the small town Maddur to take a bite of the legendary vada.
The hawkers selling vade in trains starts 30 km before Maddur and extends to a similar distance past it, beginning at Ramanagara in one direction and Mandya in the other.
It was in April 1917 that its famous vada first appeared in Vegetarian Tiffin Room (VTR) in Maddur’s only railway station.
We were fortunate to meet the owner of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant- D.N Chathura. He is a fourth generation descendant of H.D. Hebbar who managed Vegetarian Tiffin Room ( VTR ) at the station from 1948 to 1973. Chathura happily shared the Maddur vada story with me.
Family legend has it that on a particularly busy day, he just mixed up some ingredients and instead of making them in the shape of pakoras, which would take longer to cook, he flattened the mixture into discs and fried them. The result was a new snack that became popular as Maddur vada.
We also oversaw the preparation of Vadas deep inside the kitchen of Maddur Tiffanys restaurant.
It was a perfect bite of history spanning over 100 years. It was about how a simple vada transformed the landscape of a small town. For me, this is the real food heritage of India

We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our YouTube videos. Food is a window into a country's culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.
