Visiting San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
For the past several days we've called San Pedro de Atacama home. This frontier town in the northern parts of Chile straddles the border with Bolivia and Argentina. It is an launching pad for a series of outdoors adventures that include excursions to nearby volcanoes, lagoons, deserts, lakes and more surreal landscapes. As such it is a popular hangout for backpackers and travelers to arrange these trips and tours. One can also do onward travel to Bolivia via a Uyuni Salt Flat tour or to Argentina all the way to Salta. We show you what the town is like including some of the main streets, squares, restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors. It's a dusty town with lots of friendly stray dogs.
Visiting San Pedro de Atacama, Chile Travel Video Transcript:
Good afternoon from the town of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. We've been here a few days taking a few different day trips to visit volcanoes and lagoons and see flamingos and doing lots of cool stuff. We've seen lots of wildlife, we've seen some amazing landscapes. And now we're going to show you the town. It's actually quite small and there isn't a lot to do but if you're taking tours from here you're going to end up spending a bit of time in San Pedro so yeah let's go take a little tour. A little walk around. Sounds good to me.
Bienvenidos a San Pedro de Atacama. Si! And this place is pretty cool because in the distance, in the background you can see volcanoes. You have volcanoes right over there. Let me run out to the street. There.
So next up we're going to take you down a street called Caracoles. And this is like the main street in the whole town. This is where you can find ice cream shops, bars, restaurants, tour operators, laundry places. Whatever you could need and that is over this way. This way. This way. Come.
What are your overall impressions of the town after having spent a few days here? Yeah, it's a decent place to hang out. This is not the kind of town where you come to linger. It's a launching pad for a whole bunch of other activities. You can also go to Bolivia to do the Uyuni salt flat tours as well. And you can also cross over to Argentina to go to Salta which is what we're going to do tomorrow. Yeah, so come here book a tour, take some trips and eat well. Yes.
And our last stop of this little tour of San Pedro is the main square. Yes. This is where you'll find live music and lot of dogs running around. Yeah, some live music is happening as we speak.
And that is a wrap from San Pedro. We are now finishing things off with a few clips from Carnival because 'yes' we're in the thick of carnival season. Ciao. Ciao ciao.
This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

Floating in the Salty Lagoons in the Atacama Desert | San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Today we decided to take a tour around the different lagoons of the Atacama Desert. We went to our first salt water lagoon in the complex of Laguna Cejar. This lagoon was crazy - it burnt your eyes and you couldn’t sink! After we left we headed to Ojos del Salar, where we jumped off the cliffs into the lagoon and it was freezing. Our planned sunset drinks at our last lagoon was… well rained out as there was a massive storm! When we headed back to town all the power was out!

San Pedro de Atacama Day 2
Another day of cycling through the Atacama desert. This time we went to the Devils Throat and watched the sunset over de Valle de la Luna, or Moonvalley.
San Pedro De Atacama Tours Video
San Pedro de Atacama Tours video, They say the high quantities of quartz and copper in the region gives their people positive energy, and the good vibes of northern Chiles number-one tourist draw, San Pedro de Atacama (elevation 2438m), are sky high.
The popularity of this adobe precordillera oasis stems from its position in the heart of some of northern Chiles most spectacular scenery. A short drive away lies the countrys largest salt flat, its edges crinkled by volcanoes (symmetrical Licancábur, at 5916m, looms closest to the village). Here too are fields of steaming geysers, a host of otherworldly rock formations and weird layer-cake landscapes.

[Biking to Ojos Del Selar and Cejar Laguna in San Pedro de Atacama] CHILE Travel Vlog #5
So, I biked for three hours to Ojos Del Selar thinking it wouldn't be that bad. But it was bad coming back to San Pedro de Atacama, CHile. Watch the video, if you are planning to walk or bike to either Cejar Laguna or Tebenquiche Lagoon. I ended up skipping both of them and just went to Ojos Del Selar. Valle de la Luna, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Valley of the Moon, Chile 2019
El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is located 13 kilometres (8 mi) east of San Pedro de Atacama, to the north of Chile in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert. It has various stone and sand formations which have been carved by wind and water. It has an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon.
Valle de la Luna is a part of the Reserva Nacional los Flamencos and was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 for its natural environment and strange lunar landscape, from which its name is derived.

Ride Day 60: San Pedro de Atacama to Antofagasta
Full Post: Antofagasta, Chile, is a port city in northern Chile and just a two day stop for me as I made my way south to Santiago. Everything I could think about now was getting to Santiago to plan my final and toughest assignment to get to Patagonia and hopefully Ushuaia.
I knew once I got to Santiago I would need to get my KTM Super Adventure serviced, new tires and also replace parts in my helmet if possible.
After one night in San Pedro de Atacama, I awoke to quite a gorgeous day, perhaps a little chilly, but I would take the sunshine any day. I spent a few hours looking around, and it was a pretty impressive spot.
To Antofagasta
But it was time to move on. I would travel via Ruta 23, Ruta 25 and Panamericana Norte/Ruta 5 on my way to Antofagasta.
I would travel mostly through Calama, the desert city of Sierra Gorda and also the small mining town of Mantos Blancos. But, there was not much to see along the route.
Antofagasta
Antofagasta is a port city in northern Chile, about 1,100 kilometres (700 mi) north of Santiago. It is the capital of Antofagasta Province and Antofagasta Region. According to the 2012 census, the city has a population of 345,420.
According to the 2012 census, the city has a population of 345,420.
Formerly part of Bolivia, Antofagasta was captured by Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879–83), and the transfer of sovereignty was finalized in the 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the two countries.
The city of Antofagasta is closely linked to mining activity, being a major mining area of the country.
The last decade has seen a steady growth in the areas of construction, retail, hotel accommodations, population growth, and remarkable skyline development.
Antofagasta has the highest GDP per capita of Chile, 37,000 USD and the 3rd place for Human Development Index just after Metropolitana de Santiago Region and Magallanes and Antártica Chilena Region. From Wikipedia
Panamericana Hotel Antofagasta
I arrived around 3pm. My room was not ready on arrival. No one came to help me with my bags, yet the porter was keen as mustard to walk my bags to my room and get money for nothing.
It took about 45 minutes to check in after arrival. This was because there was one customer being served and only two staff. One of the reception staff was occupied with paperwork right in front of me. Obviously much more important
One of the reception staff was occupied with paperwork right in front of me. Obviously much more important than serving a customer.
Once I got to my room, I got all my gear ready, all my devices on charge and still had some gear left in the bike. So I would have to go down again shortly.
So I showered and changed and soaked my gear in the bath as I had a balcony and the weather was nice and warm - I figured it would dry by morning.
Then I went back down to reception. I asked them to look after a bag whilst I went shopping and touring (not wanting to go back up to my room and back down again)
I went for a walk to local shops, got some delicious street food, then went for a swim in beach and returned again after about 3 hours. They could not find my bag, actually, they could not find the porter who took my bag.
After about another 30 minutes he arrived and said he gave it to the girl at reception. She finally looked up at me and said Oh, yes here it is, was sitting right next to her the whole time. Pathetic.
The room was nice, rest of staff was nice, views were nice, but will never return. WiFi was just average and hotel pretty much empty.

Floating in a Lake in the Middle of Desert I San Pedro de Atacama Chile
Who would ever think that you can float in a lake in the middle of the dessert in Chile? Yes, it's true. You have to come to San Pedro de Atacama - the Atacama dessert and visit Lagoon Cejar, Lagoon Piedra. It has 70% more salt than sea and this is how you will be floating in a lake in the middle of dessert Atacama.
It was absolutely fantastic to feel this sensation for the first time. We are enjoying Chile very much and this day one of our highlights. Definitely put San Pedro de Atacama Dessert on your list when you will travel to Chile.
