Walking in SKOPJE / North Macedonia ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Skopje is the capital city of North Macedonia. About one quarter of the country's population lives in in this city yet few tourists make it there.
There are a few sights in Skopje so we start our walk at the Kale Fortress for a view over the city. From the hills we walk down to the Old Town, visit the Old Bazaar (14:00) that is just about to close for the day. We check several of the old streets with gold and souvenir shops. There are also restaurants serving Balkan food like cevapcici.
Outside the Old Town we see are couple of monuments around the Macedonia Square. Walking over the stone bridge we are in a newer part of the city with the Memorial House to Mother Teresa. We head back via the Art Bridge to the Old Town where we end this walk.

A Fast Walking Tour of Skopje, Macedonia: Part 1
What a day! Touring interesting Kratovo took hours, stops at a church, drive to Skopje and then tour for another couple of hours, it's no wonder everyone in the group was ready to fall off their feet. Skopje is is in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, capital of the Republic of Macedonia and was once an important crossroad in the Ottoman Empire.
We began touring at the 1500 year old Skopje Fortress, simply referred to as Kale, the Turkish word for fortress; guide Goran related information about the 1963 Earthquake that may not have been high in magnitude but still devastated families; and then worked our way through the old Turkish area. Lots to see. Lots to do in Macedonia.

Macedonia Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Macedonia.
Macedonia is a young Balkan republic that is a combination of both Orient and Occident. Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the Vardar River Valley. It has a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years and forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unite both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia and in the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in the city. Ottoman rule began in 1392 and lasted for more than five hundred years. Near the village of Glumovo is the Bogorodica Monastery that was founded in the fourteenth century and is active again today. The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

SKOPJE
Skopje, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia with about a third of the total population. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. It was known in the Roman period under the name Scupi.
The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC; remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre. On the eve of the 1st century AD, the settlement was seized by the Romans and became a military camp. When the Roman Empire was divided into eastern and western halves in 395 AD, Scupi came under Byzantine rule from Constantinople. During much of the early medieval period, the town was contested between the Byzantines and the Bulgarian Empire, whose capital it was between 972 and 992. From 1282 the town was part of the Serbian realm and its capital city since 1346. In 1392 the city was conquered by the Ottoman Turks who called the town Üsküp. The town stayed under Ottoman control over 500 years, serving as the capital of pashasanjak of Üsküb and later the Vilayet of Kosovo. At that time the city was famous for its oriental architecture. In 1912 the city was liberated by the Kingdom of Serbia during the Balkan Wars and after the First World War the city became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugoslavia). In the Second World War the city was conquered by the Bulgarian Army, which was part of Axis powers. In 1944 it became the capital city of Democratic Macedonia (later Socialist Republic of Macedonia), which was a federal state, part of Democratic Federal Yugoslavia (later Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia). The city developed rapidly after World War II, but this trend was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous earthquake. In 1991 it became the capital city of independent Macedonia.
Skopje is located on the upper course of the Vardar River and is located on a major north-south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. It is a center for metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather, and printing industries. Industrial development of the city has been accompanied by development of the trade, logistics, and banking sectors, as well as an emphasis on the fields of culture and sport. According to the last official count from 2002, Skopje has a population of 506,926 inhabitants; according to two unofficial estimates for more recent period, the city has a population of 668,518 or 491,000 inhabitants.Wikipedia

Exploring Skopje, Macedonia on Your Own
At last a free afternoon to enjoy Skopje at leisure! Marine Steve and I walked across the Stone Bridge, originally built in the Sixth Century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian, destroyed, and reconstructed. It connects the main square and restored Turkish bazaar area dating back to Ottoman times. Don't miss the long Gold Street. What else would a person call a street filled with nothing by jowl-to-jowl gold-laden windows?
Past other shops, mosques, restaurants and supermarkets before plopping down for a fast kebab snack at Kebapeilnica Destan, from 1913 considered to have the best kebabs in Skopje. (Delicious food despite the surly waiters.)

We also visited the famous Ottoman-era Mosque Mustafa Pasha's Mosque as well the Church of the ascension of Jesus, which is an Orthodox Church.
The next day, we drove south to see Ohrid, Macedonia to enjoy the sceneries of the Ohrid lake, explore the Old Town, and have a nice Macedonian lunch with stunning views of the lake.
