Top 5 Things to do in Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington the capital of New Zealand aka the windy city. If you're visiting this beautiful city then check out what our Top 5 Things to do in Wellington are!
Starting with the number one thing to do in Wellington -
#1 Weta Workshop Tour
Weta Workshop are a multi-award winning design studio who are world famous for turning fantasy and imagination into real life. This guided tour is something that every Lord of the Rings fan needs to experience or even if you just love learning about special effects and the magic that goes into prop building for movies. This team of amazing and passionate artists have had their hands in some of the most incredible and iconic films in the past 2 decades.
Make sure you book in advance though as spaces are limited and tickets do sell out.
#2 Climb the famous Mt Victoria
It's a short hike in exchange for some stunning views of the city and Oriental Bay. If you're going to make this climb you can expect to complete a round trip within 40 - 60 minutes depending on your pace.
#3 Visit Te Papa museum
Te Papa is easily the best and most famous museum in New Zealand. A bonus is that it's free entry into most of the museum but to view the Terracotta Warriors it was an additional $20 charge. The Terracotta Warriors exhibit brought in from China will only be running until April, so be sure to check it out before it departs our shores. Te Papa is a super interesting place and you could easily spend a day in the museum exploring all the different exhibits.
#4 Stroll around Oriental Bay
Oriental Bay boasts one of Wellington's finest walks. Beautiful views of the beach, bay and back into the city. Stop off along the way to grab some ice cream and enjoy the cafe life here.
Finally to wrap up our list of top things to do in Wellington...
#5 Ride the historic cable car
The short cable car ride took us up to an amazing viewpoint of the city. For ticket prices and information on what to do once you're up there check out the link below:
Overall we had an amazing time in our capital city especially with all the incredible food too. We hope you get the chance to visit if you ever come to New Zealand!

Wellington New Zealand - Quick Tour
A brief visual tour of the layout of Wellington New Zealand, from a high vantage point that allows us to see the majority of the surrounding area. Highlights here are downtown Wellington, the Wellington airport, as well as the building where we did all the sound editing and design (though not the mixing) for all 3 of the Lord of the Rings films. This building is no longer in use for sound.

-- About this video --
Already, we’ve had an awesome time in Wellington, New Zealand, from going to the famous Te Papa Museum to seeing wildlife at Zealandia and so much more. However, we have not yet had chance to just explore the city of Wellington and see the sights of Wellington City centre. That’s what we are doing today: going on our own city tour of Wellington.
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and has a real reputation for being an artsy city. We certainly see this for ourselves on our own travel Wellington experience as we check out murals, street art and sculptures. In particular, there are hidden poems and art along the Wellington Waterfront.
We also take the time to visit the Capital Market which is full of street food and cheap eats in Wellington. Another great place for coffee in Wellington on our Wellington city tour is Enigma Cafe on Courtenay Place.
From the architecture to the street art, Wellington city is a great place to take a walk and check out the hustle and bustle. For more things to do in Wellington, be sure to check out our Wellington Playlist:

Wellington - City Video Guide
Wellington is the political, cultural and culinary capital of Aotearoa as the Māori call New Zealand. The compact city spills out of the mountains and overlooks Cook Strait.
In the world's southernmost capital fresh ocean winds seem to bring in waves of creativity. Civic Square is an eclectic mix of artworks and houses the elegant Town Hall, while Cuba Street is the place to go for shopping. The waterfront is dotted with craft beer bars and restaurants.
The country's cultural heritage is explained in the beloved Te Papa National Museum. Other good museums in Wellington are the Carter Observatory and the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. On the Miramar Peninsula, the Weta Workshop shows paraphernalia of famous Sir Peter Jackson movies, including Lord of the Rings and King Kong.
In Wellington's city center stand the neoclassical Parliament House and it executive wing, called the Beehive. From Lambton Quay, the iconic Wellington Cable Car leads to the Botanic Garden. Shuttle buses drop visitors off at Zealandia, a reserve for the region's unique flora and fauna.
Kia ora! Let Wellington be your stepping stone to both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand.
34 Km adventure walk, Wellington NZ
In short I was bored (amongst other things) so headed off on a day long walk to gather my thoughts so to speak. Planned on following the coastline all the way but tide and fatigue drove me inland back to the start point...which ironically was nearly the same distance as doing the intended route, but was safer given I was new to the area. The steep beach is the Cook Straight separating the North and South Islands. Where you see the dark jagged rocks in the distance, I was forced up the hill on the left...450 vertical metres in about as many horizontal...

Weta Workshop Tours in Wellington - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are jumping on a bus from Wellington City Centre in New Zealand and heading over to Miramar, the home of Weta Studios, Weta Cave and the Weta Workshop!
Weta are the props and special effects team behind huge movies and TV shows, most famously The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, so visiting the Weta Workshop is a must for a Lord of the Rings in New Zealand experience. #realmiddleearth
We arrive at the free portion of Weta’s offerings in Miramar, The Weta Cave. At the Weta Cave you can take a look in their mini museum of Lord of the Rings props and figurines. There is also a behind-the-scenes video to explain the work that Weta Studios and Weta Digital do.
For a more in-depth look at Weta’s work, we join a Weta Workshop Tour which takes us to one of their prop rooms and has windows looking into Weta workers creating props for their next movie. The Weta Workshop Tour allows no photography or filming but it’s a great insight into the movie industry.
After our Weta Workshop Tour, we head on one more tour to see how miniature effects are made with the Weta Thunderbirds Are Go tour. Although we don’t know much about the Thunderbirds Are Go! TV show, we are surprised to be amazed by the miniature worlds created by the Weta New Zealand team. We might even go as far as to say that it was our personal favourite Weta Tour of the day!
So what do you think of the Weta Workshop Tours in Wellington? Would you add the Weta Cave or Weta Workshop Tours to your New Zealand bucket list?

Lady Norwood Rose Garden, Wellington city, New Zealand
Lady Norwood Rose Garden, Wellington, New Zealand
It was the first day in the capital city Wellington, After lunch we headed to the Wellington botanic gardens. It is located in the central Wellington.
The information below is from the website
The Lady Norwood Rose Garden is situated in the Wellington Botanical Gardens, only a short walk or drive from downtown Wellington. There are 110 beds set out in a formal geometic design with columnades on three sides and the Begonia House as a backdrop. The flowering season starts in November and continues until the end of April.
Each bed contains a different variety of rose, ranging from old favourites to recently released varieties. David Austin, patio and climbing roses are on show around the perimeter of the gardens. A trial garden on the western side monitors new varieties for three years before a decision is made on their inclusion in the gardens.
The roses are cared for using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program which uses monitoring to determine pest and disease control, with low toxicity chemicals and natural predators such as ladybirds used.
In 2015, the Lady Norwood Rose Garden received the Garden of Excellence award from the World Federation of Rose Societies.
The information about Wellington botanic gardens is from the website
Over 26 hectares of unsurpassed views, unique landscape, exotic forests, native bush, colourful floral displays and gorgeous specialist gardens.
Visit the Duck Pond, Begonia House, award-winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden, Treehouse Visitor Information Centre, Sundial of Human Involvement, Children's Play Area and the historic Bolton Street Memorial Park, where many of the city's pioneers are buried.
Gardens open daily sunrise to sunset. Garden tours are available by prior booking or prior request.'
