The Cornishman - 4965 Rood Ashton Hall & 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
From our temporary base in Devon, it was a nice, leisurely, drive to Whiteball to pick up The Cornishman; a Birmingham to Plymouth excursion hauled, from Bristol onwards, by 4965 Rood Ashton Hall & 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.
Leaving Whiteball, we headed for Dawlish Warren, passing the locos as they stood in the loop at Tiverton Junction. After a short pathing stop at Dawlish Warren, to allow a Voyager to overtake, the pair were off along the sea wall.
At Plymouth, just before 4965 and 5043 returned from servicing at Laira, 67026 and 67006 arrived with a Truro - Taunton - Plymouth VSOE.
Once the locos and support coach had been attached to the stock in the correct order, and the return timings had been consigned to the firebox, the train departed.
We had planned to go to Woodrow Barton or Stoke Canon, but after a couple of setbacks around Pinhoe we opted for Cullompton instead, arriving at exactly the same time as the train, which was running more than 15 minutes early.
The departure from the Tiverton Junction water stop was as early as the arrival, but we had just enough warning to be able to grab two shots, either side of Pugham Farm.

Lew's News Extra - Tiverton Town Hall Children's Parliament 2012
Young people took control of Tiverton Town Hall this week to tell councillors what they would like to see improved in our area.
Around fifty pupils between years four and seven from 12 schools which are members of the Tiverton Learning Community took part in Children's Parliament.
They spent the morning looking at the town's history and comparing it to the present day before coming up with their own ideas on how to shape Tiverton's future.
The day was supported by all areas of local government with councillors taking a keen interest in the ideas.
As well as giving children the chance to formulate ideas, it is another way in which young people in the town are brought together as a community.
At the end of the morning, a map of Tiverton had been coloured in which was full of ideas ready to be talked about during the afternoon.
Meanwhile in the mayoralty room children were getting creative with drama by exploring their feelings about starting at the high school and their future within the community.
Town, district and county councillors were invited to come along for a presentation in the afternoon which showcased the best ideas the pupils had come up with -- these included talking bins and a machine to pick chewing gum up, rare wildlife being released on the Grand Western Canal, an area for people to graffiti in the town centre and the creation of an area for storytelling and outdoor performing arts to displayed.
Everyone in the room then had a chance to vote for their favourite idea.
While the votes were being counted, the performance pieces as mentioned earlier were shown to the civic dignitaries.
Following the performances, County Councillor for Tiverton East Des Hannon announced the results from the vote.
The council have promised to look into all four ideas put forward by the youth of the town so look out for graffiti walls and talking bins in the town soon.
And to see the full fifty minute presentation and performances you can do so by finding it on our homepage at youtube.co.uk/lewsnews2004.
Tiverton Remembrance & Wreath Laying on Armistice Day 2010
TIVERTON town centre came to a standstill on Thursday (November 11) as townsfolk, veterans and civic dignitaries gathered to pay tribute to service personnel and their families.
The British Legion and the Tiverton Town Council joined Mid Devon District Council whose chairman Frank Rosamond led the commemoration on Phoenix Lane to remember those who gave their lives in two world wars, and more than seventy conflicts since then.
The Last Post was played shortly before 11am, and as silence fell, only the strong winds could be heard rustling in the trees before wreaths were laid on the wall beside the Burma Star memorial.
Following on from the ceremony at Phoenix Lane, Tiverton Mayor Cllr Lester Crocker laid wreaths on two graves of servicemen who are buried there. Inside the cemeteries chapel a small service was held where town clerk John Vanderwolfe read out the names of Tiverton's war dead.
Cllr Crocker said: It's an honour and privilege to be able to do something like this as mayor. Just to stand outside in the rain is nothing compared to what they gave for us.
My father was in the way and I remember him telling me stories from Europe, and to lead the remembrance of people like him and those who did not come back is a privilege.
It was also nice to visit the graves at the cemetery as I had never done that before, and I don't think that's something a lot of people in the town know we do.
At the Grand Western Canal, members of the Air Cadets and Wing Commander David Chivers waited for the mayor to join them in remembering flight lieutenant Roger Moore and Martin FJ Archard who lost their lives when the aircraft they were flying in crashed at the canal in November 1961.
Their action of crash landing outside the town could have saved many in the town itself.
Chairman of the Tiverton Royal British Legion Ramsay Hutchison said: It could have been quite disastrous and there is nothing that could repay what they did that evening.
The service on Phoenix Lane was very well done, and had a very good turnout which shows that people still remember and I was very pleased with that.
On Remembrance Sunday the annual parade will commence from the Town Hall at 10.30am.
Among those joining the procession to St Peter's Church will be members of the Royal British Legion, army and sea cadets and Mayor Lester Crocker in full robes.
After the service the parade will return to the memorial hall for the laying of wreaths.

Perfect. Chapt.1
I stood at the door of my new bedroom and looked around. It had been buitefully decorated. It had a black wall with little stars in it, another was white, another was where my wardrobe and dresser was and the other two were a creamy colour. It had a double bed with black and white covers. I dragged my suitcase into the room and put it on the bed. I sat down and looked around. It was really big. I noticed a door at the corner of the room. I went over and opened it. Awesome! I had an on suite! I unpacked and heard someone knock on my door. Come in I said. Soon dad was in my room looking around i did a good job hu? he said looking around. Yeah dad. Awesome I smiled at him. He left to let me unpack. When i had i flopped onto my bed and shut my eyes. When i woke up i checked the clock, 6am! WOW! I started school today! I got up and showered quickly. I got dressed into and went downstairs. I picked up my bookbag and grabbed an apple. I looked at the time 7:45. I checked the folder we got from the school that gave us all the details. School began at 8am. It was only down the road to i decided to head off now. I kissed my dad's cheek as i walked outside. The crisp British air hit me like a tone of bricks. I moved from America just a few days ago so i wasn't used to this weather yet. Anyway, i set off down the footpath and started to walk on the pavement to school. When i got there i went inside and up to the main office. I collected my timetable and checked it. Today i had; English, maths, bio, French and art. I smiled wide at art! It's my favourite subject. The bell rang, I check where my form room was. 210. I walked down the hall. 207..208..209..210! I walked in and saw a seat at the back. I went over to the teacher and introduced myself. She got up Class? This is Elizabeth Brito please, call me Ellie I mumbled right, right Ellie. Okay so- she was interrupted by someone coming through the door. My head turned and i saw a boy standing there. He had tanned skin and black hair. I smiled to myself and looked down. Mr.Malik! This is your final warning! Be here on time or you will be with the head teacher again! sorry dude He sat down next to where i was going to sit. Okay as i was saying. This is Ellie, she's new so please be nice I smiled and started to walk to the seat i had seen at the back. I put my bag on the table but before i could sit down i was being pushed away by a blonde bimbo. She pushed my bag to the floor and sat where i was about to his hi Zayny poo She said before looking at me and snapping keep walking fresh meat! I sighed and picked up my bag and say next to a brunette girl at the back. Hey I'm Rachel Ellie. Who's that? i asked pointing to the blonde girl i had just met. that's Rosie. Ignore her she's a slut. No one likes her Rachel assured me. I smiled and took out my pencil case. Soon the bell ran for class. I got up and looked at my timetable. English. I started walking to the room. I walked in and sat down at the back. I got my things out and waited for the teacher. Soon the boy i had seen in form walked in. He took the seat next to me on the table. I felt myself blush slightly. Soon Rachel walked in and sat next to me hey Zayn she said smiling vas 'appnen? the boy said in a funny voice. Zayn. Such a nice name. Rachel giggled and introduced me so this is Ellie, she's new oh yeah, saw you in form. Ignore Rosie, she's so annoying. You orite? He said yeah i'm good thanks i said smiling. Soon the teacher walked in. When we were set some work we had to work in a group. Instead of doing the work we just chatted, which i didn't mind because i got to know Rachel and Zayn better. Soon the next bell went. what you guys got next? Spanish Rachel said with a groan. thought Harry was in that class he replied winking. Rachel shoved him. who's Harry? I asked looking at them. Rachel replied HE's one of my good friends a good friend she wants to shag! Zayn said nudging her. She rolled her eyes and went out the room. so i got maths. What about you? Maths too i said smiling, Zayn smiled back and we walked to maths. Soon it was lunch. I had nearly every class with Zayn. We exchanged numbers in maths and texted each other in classes we didn't have together. We were getting so close it was nice.
Lunchtime Changes at Tiverton High School 2019
At THS assemblies have been held explaining the changes that are being made to lunchtimes.
Rae Owen from THS said: “We are focussing on reducing litter, all students can sit down to eat their food together, wet weather provision outside of classrooms and increase supervision.
“There have been lots of changes made throughout the summer holidays to our refectory area, and we are no longer going to have throw away packaging. We are going to use cutlery and crockery, and pupils will take their trays and help themselves to food.
“We have displays showing our new healthy menu on the walls featuring a three-week menu, and I’m sure pupils will agree the food is healthy and exciting. Our new refectory has been made brighter by ten healthy choices for mental health signs which pupils help create during activities week at the end of the summer term.
“A food cart has been moved from outside to a new room which has been decked out with plenty of benches for friends to sit around and enjoy.”
Mrs Owen added that students who find larger spaces a challenge, there was a new calm zone for students with a unique pass to eat their lunch in a quieter area.
Year ten pupils will no longer be able to access Morrisons and now have a common room for their use. Year eleven pupils who go to Morrisons have been asked to eat food in one outdoor space with new benches and large bins. During wet weather, they will be able to use the sports hall along with students with packed lunches and cold food.

Nunney Castle
The striking and picturesque moated castle of Nunney was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mere, a local knight who was beginning to enjoy royal favour. Extensively modernised in the late 16th century, the castle was held for the King during the Civil War, but quickly fell to Parliamentarian cannon in 1645: not until Christmas Day 1910, however, did the gun-damaged portion of the wall finally collapse.
A half decent day in October, Located in Frome Somerset, Nunney Castle. Set in the middle of a village, quietly tucked away from everything. A gorgeous castle, with FREE admission.
come and check it out.

44932 slogs through Tiverton Parkway on 01/09/13
Recreating a scene that could've been from the 1960's,Black Five 44932,having taken over from a failed 47237 powers through Tiverton Parkway with the late running Royal Duchy on eve of 1st September 2013. 44932 didn't sound in the best of health itself and indeed struggled over Whiteball summit.
'Z48 remembered' with 5029 Nunney Castle & 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
9th May 1964 was an historic day on the Western Region of BR. At a time when steam had virtually vanished in the West Country and diesels rapidly replacing steam on the Western network, BR along with with Ian Allen Publishing ltd organised a special charter from Paddington to Plymouth and back to mark the 60th anniversary of 3440 City of Truro reaching 102mph down Wellington bank in 1904. The railtour was to see the last and finest performances of Castles to run on that route. The headcode for the train was Z48 as can be seen on the smokebox of the locomotives. 4079 Pendennis Castle was rostered to run from Paddinton to Plymouth but had to be taken off at Westbury because of fire bars being dropped. Modified Hall 6999 Capel Dewi Hall continued to train onwards but stopped at Taunton to change engines once again, this time with 7025 Sudeley Castle. With 7025 now taking over she then carried on the run to Plymouth, performed well and took 97 mins & 51 seconds in 82.8 miles.
The return trip was hauled by 7029 Clun Castle from Plymouth to Bristol, in a record time 7029 ran a total of 127.4 miles in 133 mins & 9 secs, and ran down Wellington Bank at a max speed of 96mph. A REAL RECORD BREAKER once commented by Cecil J Allen. 5054 Earl of Ducie took the remainder of the Bristol-Paddington section, and thus culminating a memorable historic run for those who was there to witness it at the time.
The price of a ticket for the run was £6 12s 6d, in 2014 thats the equivalent of £117!
50 years later in 2014 the historic run was repeated, but now in the position of preserved mainline engines. On May 9th 5029 Nunney Castle hauled the Anniversary Limited from Westbury to Plymouth and back to Bristol. The Castle is first seen at Whiteball raising the echoes of a single chimney Castle up the climb. To the Devon banks and the Castle is seen tackling Rattery Bank at ease. On the return trip 5029 slowly slogs her way up the steep 1in42 climb up Hemerdon, sound waves from the loco's 'bark' could be felt hitting the cheast as she drew closer to the bridge. Then last location to see the Castle is at Burlescombe as 5029 revs her four cylinder motions up the climb to Whiteball summit. 5029 ultimately was the star show of the event. Now...who dare says 5029 can't steam well?!
The next day 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe hauled the second commemorative Z48 run, running in commemoration of her double chimney sister engine 7029 Clun Castle from Plymouth to Bristol. 5043 carried the General Utility Van (GUV) in order to carry extra water capacity to running non-stop. Beginning at Coombe Fishacre it was a fist clenching few moments to see if the sun would stay out in the nick of time, 5043 in full view of the sun flattens the scene with an 8 coach load. The second and last scene catches 5043 run on the GWML near Uffington in strong windy conditions, nearly reenacting 5054 Earl of Ducie to Paddington.
A fine two runs it was. Just a shame neither 4079 or 7029 could make it to either these runs.
These shots along with archive cine and stills of the original 1964 run, interviews with passengers crews, and much covered on train footages are featured on Z48: A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER see for details. And are also featured on PSOV's 9th May 1964 DVD which features similarities to the original run. See

4079 Pendennis Castle repatriation event - Didcot Railway Centre 30th July 2000
It's been just over 10 years since 4079 Pendennis Castle was repatriated from Australia having spent 23 years of ownership under Hammersly Iron's parent company Rio Tinto Group. Following restoration since 2005 it is anticipated that the locomotive will return to steam within the next 2 or 3 years.

Flying Scotsman & 44871 on Dawlish sea wall
On 4th October 2018, legendary steam locomotive 'Flying Scotsman' and 'Black 5' No.44871 headed 'The Cathedrals Express' from London to Plymouth, U.K.
This was likely Flying Scotsman's first-ever visit to the South-West of England. The train is on the often-photographed sea wall section of the Great Western Main Line between Exeter and Newton Abbot in the failing early evening light.
