Landscapers Contract and Garden Design for Gilford Rd., Sandymount
On our first visit to this garden it was overgrown with poor lawn, rotten shed, low surrounding old walls and water feature. After meeting with the client we came up with the following brief.
• Low maintenance
• Extend height of wall
• New water feature
• Paving stone to match stone in new extension
• New garden shed
• Vegtable area
• Scented planting
• New lawn
• Garden lighting
• Plaster surrounding walls and strengthen
• Keep within budget, no extras
The first job was to clear the garden of all trees, shrubs, perennials and climbers except for the large silver birch. The old shed, water feature, wall extensions and rubbish were all carted to the dump. The water features reservoir and pump were in good condition and retained.
Our landscapers started on the old surrounding walls. They were weak and in a bad state of disrepair. To strengthen we plastered the walls twice with a strong concrete render. To strengthen further 4x3 posts were dropped into good sized square holes every 2.3M. The posts were tied to the wall with 150mm express nails and each hole filled with a strong concrete mix. The walls would now be good and strong and the posts would provide the framework for the wall extension sections. To create support for climbers we passed bull wire through each post and tightened with agricultural fence tighteners, this was done on four levels, each level 40cm apart. This worked well and looked great.
Next the timber wall extension sections were installed. These 2.3M sections were fitted between the posts. The sections were constructed using the hit and miss style of fencing. The advantage of using hit and miss is that air can travel through the extension resulting in less strain on wall and post. Each post was then cut 50mm proud of the extension level and capped. This minor detail made a big difference.
The next job was the water feature. This was created using a 1.7x0.9M rectangular section of toughened glass bedded into a strong concrete mix within a concrete pond sealed with fibreglass tanking. A stainless steel rill was installed to the edge of the pond to create a flow from the pond into the existing reservoir. Water from the reservoir was then pumped up to a 0.6 stainlless steel blade which released a sheet of water across the face of the toughened glass below. The effect created was contemporary with a nice amount of sound. The water feature looked best in sunshine when shadows from the falling water were created.
Our landscapers then set about laying the patio, paths, mowing edges and kerbs to beds. The stone used was St Vallier Limestone ordered from Italy, this matched the stone laid in the new sunroom creating a link inside and out.
The low voltage garden lighting system was next to being installed. The brands used were Collingwood spike lights for the beds and Oase aquatic lights for the pond. The Collingwood spike lights were fitted with 20 watt bulbs for uplighting of shrubs and 50 watt for uplighting of trees. The Aquatic lights were fitted with 50 watt bulbs and blue filters to give a dividing effect within the garden. Strip lights were also fitted under the overhang of the steps leading into the garden. Garden lighting is a must in all gardens as the effects achieved are magnificent.
Planting of the garden started with the climbers. Specimen Trachleospernum jasminoides were used as they are not too vigorous and will provide scent when in flower. Each plant was unravelled from its cane and tied to the bull wire climbing frame surrounding the garden. A 5M Betula jacquemontii was planted to complement the existing one, both framed the new shed. The Birches were under planted with Dicksonia antartica ferns. Standard Ligustrum delavaynums were planted in front of the raised seating area, these complimented the wigwams and were under planted with Allium 'Christophii' behind a Lavendula 'Hidcote' hedge. The rest of the planting was a mixture of small perennials and shrubs including Euphorbia amyg 'Purpurea', Epimedium rubrum, Alchemilla mollis, Heuchera 'Purple Palace, Ophiopogon plan 'Nigrescens', Rosmarinus off 'Prostratus', Sedum tel 'Munstead Dark Red', Skimmia japonica, Libertia 'Gold finger', Paeonia 'Gardenia', Digitalis 'Alba' and Astelia chat 'Silver Spear'.
This landscaping project was completed within budget. The client was very happy with the results as we achieved her expectations. If you like what you see and would like a professional Landscaping and Garden Design service contact please Kevin Baumann on 086 8198444.

Fiaba - Procession (1974) Full Album.
After the debut album Frontiera released in 1972, Procession released their second album for the record label Fonit Cetra in 1974 with a different line up festuring original members Gianfranco Gaza (vocals) and Roby Munciguerra (guitars) plus Maurizio Gianotti (sax, flute) and Paolo D'Angelo (bass). In studio they were helped by some guests musicians like drummer Francesco Froggio Francica (Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno), keyboardist Ettore Vigo (Delirium) and vocalist Silvana Aliotta (Circus 2000). The result was excellent. The overall sound is less raw and aggressive if compared with the previous album and dreamy acoustic atmospheres prevail while lyrics by Marina Comin perfectly fit the music blending dreams and reality.
The opener Uomini di vento (Men of wind) starts with a rhythm percussion pattern, then electric guitar comes in... The wind blows strongly by now / Men run away because they can't stand it.... Sax, flutes and vocals depict a world stormed by the wind where scared shadows are looking for a shelter. Reality and its hypocrisies are swept away...
Un mondo sprecato (A wasted world) is more reflexive and darker and features good electric guitar and sax solos... I wasted a world trying to understand / But I don't know how to begin / Man, you look at me and you don't understand / I used to live like you / A bitter life like many others / But I made up my mind and now I know / You're laughing at a clown / That has stopped playing with the wind by now... You are laughing without asking yourself what this tale could mean....
On the long and complex C'era una volta (Once upon a time) the band try to explore the dark side of the moon and sax and vocals every now and again run after Pink Floyd's shadows... Lyrics are about a quest for true life: a child set off looking for the sense of life and when he thinks to have found it he realizes that he's old by now and that he has wasted his time...
Notturno begins softly, with acoustic guitar and flute drawing a strange and unquiet dreamy atmosphere... A boat sails lightly on the see / There's a man on the edge / And the breeze wets his face / And the night gets darker / The man seems looking for life / But what is he looking for? He's not a fisherman... And the sea gets darker and darker / And the man leaves the edge / Now the boat is lighter....
Il volo della paura (The flight of fear) is another beautiful dreamy track. Lyrics depict a flock of seagulls that darken the sky. When they land all together the earth is shaken. Men that can't fly are scared and remain on their shaken world where there's only a wall left, so hard to climb... Just thousand wings and so much fear!
The final title track Fiaba (Fairy tale) describes a village on top of a hill where live people refusing the rules of the world and enjoy their peace... I think that the inlay painting featuring classical and rock musicians climbing the hill describes this track better than words...
An essential album for every Italianprog lover!

Paint Your Colors - Urban Folk Art & Music
As we crossed the intersection of Mulberry St. and Patterson Ave. downtown Memphis Tennessee we were in awe of the graffiti style mural on Double J's wall. I couldn't resist the inspiration so I pulled out my guitar and free-styled a poem I had been working into song called, Paint Your Colors.
We later learned this magnificent projects title and artist, 'How Sweet The Sound' by Edwin McSwine is just one of his many illustrative works of color and dimensions of the real world. His work portrays the soulful vibe of this southern city and the people that give Memphis it's personality.

Lecture: “Francisco Goya and the Alba Family”
Presented by Dr. Christopher Johns, Norman and Roselea Goldberg Professor of History of Art, Vanderbilt University
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes began his career as a painter in service to the Bourbon royal family and to a select cluster of noble families, including the Floridablanca, the Osuna, and especially the Alba. Join us for a lecture that will trace the evolution of Goya’s career, with special emphasis on his portraits of the 13th Duchess of Alba. Dr. Johns will begin with the context of the Spanish Enlightenment, which informed Goya’s earlier artistic development, and then discuss the horrors of the French occupation and resulting civil war, which Goya reflected in key works during his forties. The lecture also will pay special attention to Goya’s final isolation in the Quinta del Sordo—the house of the deaf man—where he indulged his darkest thoughts in a series of images unparalleled for their condemnation of the human condition.
