November 6 -- One Flag -- One Life | League City TX | wiredin.cc
The Bay Area Council On Drugs and Alcohol, Inc. (BACODA) hosted the One Flag -- One Life event in partnership with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Department of State Health Services, Litarodi, Houston-Galveston Area Council, United Way of Galveston County, Texas National Guard, American Legion Unit 554 of League City, Galveston County Judge James Yarbrough, League City Police Department, City of League City, Galveston County and Harris County Sheriff's Offices.
ONE FLAG -- ONE LIFE is an American Flag Healing Field® Event
An event meant to bring awareness to lives lost as a result of drinking and driving. An amazing and sobering sight; there are 1,551 3ft X 5ft U.S. flags flown in memory of each individual that was killed in an alcohol related motor-vehicle crash in the State of Texas in 2009. The acres of red, white, and blue serve as a visual reminder of the deadly consequences of drinking and driving.
Listen in as Talk of the Bay visits with Shelly Higgins, of BACODA-Bay Area Council On Drugs & Alcohol, Inc.
This Healing Field is open to the public from November 6-11th,, 9 am -- 6 pm
Location: Walter Hall Park, 807 Hwy. 3 N, League City, Texas
Message: Yearly Texas leads the nation in alcohol related crash fatalities. State and national laws have strengthened in an effort to address the DWI epidemic, but it's slow work. Driver's license suspensions, increased enforcement through No Refusal Operations, and community-based approaches, have all proven effective in stemming the DWI problem—but not eradicating it. The most effective prevention of drinking and driving is made by drivers themselves. We must take individual responsibility for ending these tragic statistics. By working with our local judges, law enforcement, and community organizations through enforcement and education we plan to make a positive impact. We strongly encourage responsible drinking. We hope after this educational component that before a person gets behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol they will think twice about the consequences. We hope they will choose to make the right decision and prevent senseless deaths.
History: The Healing Field® started as a temporary, visual memorial for the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and has evolved into commemorative events for other causes. BACODA helps individuals, families and communities stop alcohol and drug abuse through awareness, education, intervention and referral. BACODA is a non-profit 501(c)3 United Way agency that has provided substance abuse prevention and intervention services for over 30 years. For more information please visit bacoda.org. Why a field of flags?
There is no other program like the Healing Field® flag memorial. A Healing Field® event is a community event, charitable fund raiser, awareness program and an amazing and unifying experience for all involved. A field of flags conveys a powerful message. What started out as a way to commemorate the lives of those lost to us on September 11, 2001, has grown into something more. Communities across America are turning to Healing Field® flag memorials to raise money and awareness for a growing array of causes. BACODA the Bay Area Council on Drugs & Alcohols Healing Field® event will honor those lost to alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities in the State of Texas in one year. Acres of red, white and blue will stand eight feet tall in perfect rows similar to those in Arlington Cemetery. The 3 x 5 flags will stand as a temporary memorial but will make a lasting impression on those who stand before them.

ONE FLAG? ONE LIFE!
American Flag Healing Field® To Memorialize Over 1,600 Victims of Drinking and Driving on Texas Roads
CLEAR LAKE On November 10-13, 2009, the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol (BACODA) will host a Healing Field® event at Walter Hall Park to draw awareness to over 1,600 Texas alcohol-related traffic fatalities in 2008.
We want this event to raise awareness of the enormity of the problem. Awareness builds strength in a community ? a strength that can bring about social change, said Karen Van Horne, CEO of the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol.
A 3 x 5-foot American flag will stand as a memorial for each life lost last year. The acres of red, white and blue will serve as a visual reminder of the deadly consequences of drinking and driving.
These tragedies are preventable through communication, education and action. More than 1,600 lives were lost in 2008 to drunk driving in Texas and countless families and friends have been impacted for life ? it doesnt have to be this way. By joining forces with community organizations and leadership, such as BACODA, we can make a difference. I applaud their leadership and initiative in tackling this problem, said Alan Steen, administrator of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
The Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol sponsors this free event in partnership with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Galveston County Judge Yarbrough, Department of State Health Services, Sam Houston Area Council-Boy Scouts of America, Houston-Galveston Area Council and Texas National Guard. Attendees will be able to participate in family-oriented prevention activities, purchase memorial flags, and, most importantly ? people can pledge to end the unacceptable and preventable tragedies caused by drinking and driving.
Rain or shine, the event will be held in League City at Walter Hall Park, 807 Highway 3 S., located south of West Nasa Road 1, and just north of Main St in League City. Opening Ceremonies will be held on November 10th with speakers, families, placing flags for loved ones lost and other activities.
The Healing Field® started as a temporary, visual memorial for the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and has evolved into commemorative events for other causes. BACODA helps individuals, families and communities stop alcohol and drug abuse through awareness, education, intervention and referral. The nonprofit organization works with schools in Brazoria, Matagorda, Galveston and southeast Harris Counties.

Tommy Tune - New York At Christmas (standard)
music: Richard Currier
words: Jim Piazza
Christmas in the air and my heart is here and there
The Yellow Rose of Texas is mistletoe to me
But come December, I suddenly remember
That Manhattan is the only place to be...
A Santa Claus on every block, Radio City
Skyscrapers wrapped with a bow
It's Christmas Eve around the clock, In New York City
Wish you were here for the show
Thought it won't be as merry without you tonight
I've still got Broadway to make Christmas bright
The neon glow of falling snow lights up the city
New York is Christmas to me
If dreams come true and here they do
Soon I'll be seeing
New York at Christmas with you
If you long for the song of a snow crested lark
It's just a subway to old Central Park
The neon glow of falling snow lights up the city
New York is Christmas to me
If dreams come true and here they do
Soon I'll be seeing
New York at Christmas with you...
Light up the City!
New York is Christmas to me.

Tommy first introduced this Christmas song,New York At Christmas (In Tribute to 9/11) in his off-Broadway review, White Tie and Tails, at The Little Shubert Theater on West 42nd Street, NYC. THE (MUSIC) TO THE INTRO WOULD COME UP AND IT BEGAN TO SNOW ON STAGE!
The President of The United States presented Tommy with The National Medal of Arts in November 2003. He added this honor to his already unprecedented nine Tony Awards in four different categories plus, eight Drama Desk Awards, two Obie Awards, two (Fred) Astaire Awards, the American Dance Award, the Drama League Award, and the George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement... and they keep coming!
Tommy has sung and danced for three U.S. Presidents, Queen Elizabeth II, The Royal Family of Monaco. In 1991, Gwen Verdon inducted him into Broadway's Theatre Hall of Fame, and Hollywood soon followed suit when three years later he was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame appropriately placed directly in front of the Capezio Dancewear shop.
In 1965 Tommy first danced on Broadway in the chorus of Baker Street. In 1967 he was in A Joyful Noise and 1968, How Now Dow Jones. Five years and countless raves later Tommy received his first Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in Michael Bennett's, Seesaw.
Tommy's directing debut was the Off-Broadway hit, The Club, in 1976. Back on Broadway, but this time as choreographer and co-director Tune gave us The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas followed by A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine, for which he won his second Tony Award, this time for Best Choreography. He returned to Off-Broadway in 1981 to direct the controversial production of Carol Churchill's Cloud 9. The next year Tommy brought us Nine, The Musical for which he won his third Tony, his first for directing a Broadway Musical. A double Tony Award win followed for Tommy as Best Actor in a Musical and Best Choreography for the Broadway hit My One and Only co-starring Twiggy. Grand Hotel, The Musical followed with Tony wins for Best Choreography and Best Director and the following year, Tommy did what no artist had done before when he won the same two prestigious honors back to back this time for, The Will Rogers Follies.
Tommy has shied away from Hollywood, appearing in only two films early in his career. He played Ambrose Kemper in Hello, Dolly starring Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Louis Armstrong and directed by Gene Kelly. Tommy played Tommy in Ken Russell's The Boy Friend and starred with Twiggy.
In 1997 Tommy wrote, Footnotes, a memoir about his life in the theater. The same year he recorded Slow Dancin', a CD compilation of his favorite romantic ballads. The end of the millennium was the beginning of a dream come when he made his Las Vegas debut as the star of EFX, the ninety million dollar spectacular at the MGM Grand Hotel.
I first met Tommy through our mutual friend Michel Stuart (original cast member of A Chorus Line) in 1974. I went to their loft Giraffe House to audition new songs for Tommy. Thirty years later, Tommy chose to sing New York at Christmas and it became an Overnight Success.
I forgot to mention that Tommy is 6 foot 6 and 1/2 inches tall, a really big guy! He is a truly brilliant, sweet and a very kind man.
Sincerely,
Richard Currier

Watch: The Washington Nationals’ championship parade
A parade honoring the Washington Nationals’ historic World Series win against the Houston Astros is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m. ET. Join Washington Post reporter Libby Casey and others for live coverage of the celebration. The Nationals are the first team in major league history to win the World Series by claiming four games on the road. They beat the Astros, 6-2, in Game 7 to secure the franchise’s first title and Washington’s first World Series championship since 1924, when the Senators topped the New York Giants in seven games.
While the final game was held in Houston, fans gathered across the city and at the stadium in Navy Yard to watch. They wore shark hats in honor of the team’s unofficial anthem, the children’s song “Baby Shark.” Watch the moment the ballpark erupted in celebration after the victory: Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

Press Conference: Crystal Police Department Settles with Sergeant Rob Erkenbrack
The city of Crystal and police Sgt. Rob Erkenbrack have settled a nearly two-year-old labor dispute, with $160,000 going to the veteran officer who told a state mediator he was unjustly demoted in May 2013 and fired last August.
Under the agreement, neither side admits wrongdoing. The city maintains it had cause to discipline Erkenbrack, but it agreed to rescind his demotion and firing, and Erkenbrack, a 27-year veteran, retired effective April 15.
Erkenbrack said Crystal dropped its initial request for a gag order. They paid me $160,000 to settle. That is a statement of guilt by the city, he said Tuesday.
But Police Chief Stephanie Revering said the city maintains we had just cause for the employment actions that we did. She said the city settled to avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation.
The city's insurer, the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, paid $50,000 of the settlement and the city paid $110,000, league attorney Jana Sullivan said. Erkenbrack agreed to drop all claims of age discrimination and other issues against the city.
It is a good settlement for all parties, given the potential for further litigation expense, Sullivan said.
Communities United Against Police Brutality, an area nonprofit group that supported Erkenbrack, held a celebration Tuesday night at Crystal City Hall. About 20 to 25 people attended, including Erkenbrack, who called the outcome a vindication.
Earlier, Erkenbrack said the underlying issue was the city's allegation that he had not properly supervised officer Alan Watt, who left his handgun unattended on a table in the police squad room while he went to talk to Revering in April 2012.
Erkenbrack said he produced city records showing he was on vacation that day and couldn't have supervised Watt.
Revering said that the handgun situation was not the issue but that she could not discuss why Erkenbrack was disciplined.
Erkenbrack and Watt were put on paid leave and then fired. They have said they were disciplined for questioning the thoroughness of the Crystal police investigation of a home theft report stemming from a 2008 raid by the now-defunct Metro Gang Strike Force.
Revering said the city hired the Everett & VanderWiel law firm to look into the theft. She said Watt was returned to duty in September but terminated Feb. 28 because of new and old issues, which he is contesting.
