The Waltons and Walton's Mountain Museum - Schuyler, Virginia
The long-running TV series The Waltons was based on author Earl Hamner, Jr's experiences growing up in a large family in the hamlet of Schuyler (pronounced Sky-ler) in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. These were the basis of his books Spencer's Mountain and The Homecoming. The success of a TV movie based on The Homecoming led to the creation of The Waltons series, which became one of the most popular series of the 1970s.
The school that Hamner and his brothers and sisters attended has been converted into Schuyler's community center and the Walton's Mountain Museum. The museum's collection is well-presented and surprisingly extensive, making it a must-see for fans of the show. In addition to memorablia from the show and photographs, it includes faithful reproductions of the sets, a movie room, models of a number of buildings that appeared in the show and their inspirations from the Schuyler area, scripts, information about the Hamner family and Ike Godsey's Store and Souvenir Shop.
The Photos (in order)
F09A0101 - The Walton's Mountain Museum once housed the school where Earl Hamner, Jr and his brothers and sisters attended school from elementary grades through high school
F09A0107 - The kitchen set used in The Waltons is one of three rooms from the show that have been faithfully reproduced inside the museum
F09A0104 - John-Boy's bedroom is another one of the rooms from the show that has been reproduced inside the museum
F09A0109 - This radio was actually used in the series; John Walton brought it home to the family at the start of the series; the Waltons frequently gathered around the radio throughout the series
F09A0116 - There apparently was a lot more Waltons-inspired merchandise and memorabilia when the show was on than I was aware of; the museum has a huge collection of these items
F09A0120 - Earl Hamner, Jr grew up in the Hamner home, located across the street from the school/museum
F09A0124 - The Schuyler Baptist Church was the inspiration for the church the Waltons attended in the series
V87A0074 - S & H Grocery, also known as Snead's Store, served as the inspiration for Ike Godsey's General Store in the series; the store burned down in 1989; I took this photo when I first passed through Schuyler in 1987 using a cheap 110 camera, thus the grainy look to the photo

Living in Virginia: Waltons Legacy
THE WALTONS first aired on commercial television in 1972 and became a hit. The series, based on the life of the Hamner family of Schuyler, Virginia, was written by brother and author Earl Hamner. This special presentation features interviews with the Hamner brothers and sisters, the stars of THE WALTONS at the series' Silver Anniversary celebration, and the residents of Schuyler. The Hamners discuss their strong family ties, tell about growing up in Nelson County, relay how the commercial series was different from real life, and remember what it was like to have their lives and community portrayed on national television. The presentation visits Schuyler, the Hamners' childhood home, and the Walton Museum.
