Waltzing Matilda
Waltzing Matilda is Australia's most widely known bush ballad, a country folk song, and has been referred to as the unofficial national anthem of Australia.
The title is Australian slang for travelling by foot with one's goods in a Matilda (bag) slung over one's back. The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or swagman, making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's ostensible owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the theft (a crime punishable by hanging), the worker commits suicide by drowning himself in the nearby watering hole, and then goes on to haunt the site.
The original lyrics were written in 1887 by poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson. It was first published as sheet music in 1903. Extensive folklore surrounds the song and the process of its creation, to the extent that the song has its own museum, the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Queensland.
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolabah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three,
Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
You'll never take me alive, said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Oh, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

A Visit to Winton, home of Waltzing Matilda and Australian Age of Dinosaurs.
A visit to Winton in western Queensland. This was the last point of call on my road trip from Hervey Bay. Winton is home to the Waltzing Matilda Centre, Australian Age of Dinosaurs, several great pubs, Arno's Wall and is not too far from Lark Quarry where the famous footprints of a dinosaur stampede can be seen.

Waltzing Matilda Centre - More than Just a song
If there is one song that lives in the hearts of all Australians, it's Waltzing Matilda.
The song, written by A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson in 1895, has played a significant part in defining the Australian character. Waltzing Matilda inspires the Australian spirit.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre is inspired by the song embraced by the Australian people as their unofficial national anthem. The Waltzing Matilda Centre uses today's technology and interactive displays to interpret the song, our history and what it is to be Australian.
The only attraction in the world dedicated to a song; self-guided tours allow you to discover this amazing attraction at your own pace.
The introduction to the complex is the Billabong Theatrette where the ghost in the billabong tells his story of the poem, bringing the story to life during an unforgettable audio-visual presentation that touches the hearts of those who see it.
Other facilities of the centre include the Qantilda Museum, Home of the Legends Exhibition Room, Coolibah Café, an accredited Visitor Information Centre; Westpac In-Store Bank, the Station Store and the Outback Regional Gallery and Foyer with new exhibitions every six to eight weeks.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre is open seven days a week and can be contacted by phone on 1300 665 115 or (07) 4657 1466 or by emailing waltzing@matildacentre.com.au.

Australia Adventures - Outback Day 2 - Longreach - Winton
Second day gallivanting upon the Outback roads.
I was revived from the Galahs greeting in the morning.
We quickly stopped to pet a prickly pear tree(I was the only one doing the petting, hence the pricking).
We were warmly and harmlessly approached not too intimately by a curious emu.
The Stockman Longreach Museum welcomed us next. Taking advantage of the time available, we soaked up as much information of interest as was accessible.
Finally, we raced the sun to Winton trying to arrive before we were helplessly left desolate avoiding kangaroo collisions on the forsaken caliginous and unending road.
Billabong Experience - Waltzing Matilda Museum
This is a short video showing some of the features of the Billabong installation at the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Queensland, Australia.
Sitting as the centrepiece of the visitor experience is the Billabong, a cutting-edge innovative art installation. This multi-sensory experience is the next wave of museum interpretation, and the Arterial team is excited to be at the forefront of this.
Authentic, innovative, collaborative and culturally rich, the Billabong gives the audience an experience of natural phenomenon that occur in the landscape. Events that are phenomenal, although rare, and portray the essence of the Waltzing Matilda country and the inspiration for the writing of the song.
This installation was conceived and designed by Jan Nowell, Creative Director and Nick Lawson, Senior Designer and Project Manager at Arterial. The Sequence Group in Melbourne were commissioned by Arterial to realise their stories in animated motion graphics. Sonar Sound designed the storytelling and ambient soundscape. Dean Stephenson from Interactive Controls mapped the digital projections and designed the show control system. Show Works in Melbourne built and installed the billabong structure.
