CHINA: US RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARRIVE TO PROMOTE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
English/Nat
Three American religious leaders are arriving in China on Monday for an 18 day trip to promote the free practice of religion in the officially atheist country.
They aren't visiting the country to criticise, but instead to promote the benefits of Christianity.
Their visit has been welcomed by some of China's 4 (m) million Catholics.
Li Laifu and his wife brave a one hour bus ride every Sunday morning to attend religious services in a Catholic church in southern Beijing.
They are among China's small but devout group of practising Catholics.
There are some 4 (m) million official Catholics in China whose religion is sanctioned by the state.
The modest Nangangzi Church was built in 1935 on the outskirts of Beijing.
It is one of the capital's 17 official Catholic churches.
The history of Catholicism in China dates back to the 16th century when Jesuit missionaries started to arrive from Europe.
Even in the days of imperial courts, Catholics were often in conflict with government authorities and there has always been an official and an unofficial church.
Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, when churches were destroyed or turned in to factories and schools, some 12-thousand official churches of various denominations have been established.
At the Li home, prayers before meals are a normal part of daily life and Catholicism has a long history in the family.
They make a clear distinction between the official and unofficial church and hold a position close to that of the government.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
I have some contact with Catholics and Catholic churches in the countryside and have observed that they have different views on some issues and engage in certain activities under the cover of religion. This is different from normal religious activities.
SUPER CAPTION: Li Laifu, Chinese catholic
There are a number of restrictions on practising Catholicism in China.
The official church doesn't recognise the Vatican or the Pope due to links with Taiwan.
Even so, Mr Li's home still has a picture of his Holiness.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
He (the Pope) does not know the reality in China. I hope that one day, his Holiness will have the opportunity to visit China and take a look around. He could then get to know the facts and from a correct view. He would find out that neither Catholic believers, nor Catholics priests are being persecuted because of their religious belief.
SUPER CAPTION: Li Laifu, Chinese catholic
But, according to many human rights groups, the official view differs from the reality in China.
They estimate that there are as many as 10-12 (m) million Catholics practicing their religion in underground churches across China.
It's the same for other forms of Christianity.
Independent religious activities - such as this Protestant mass - take place in private homes.
These home churches have been persecuted by the state for many years.
Many religious leaders have been jailed and even if this kind of detention is decreasing, harassment, destruction of property and heavy fines are still prevalent.
On Monday, an American religious delegation is expected to arrive in China to see first hand the situation in the country.
But the trip is likely to be heavily controlled by the government and the visitors will find it difficult to see the unofficial side of religion in China.

Moving a Taoist God By Crane (Malaysia)
For some reason, the local god/deity (張公聖君 / Zhang Gong Sheng Jun) wanted to take a spin around the neighborhood (which necessitated a crane to lift him in and out of the temple) as part of the Taoist festival procession for his birthday. The story behind the god (who apparently was a real person born on the 23rd day of the 7th lunar month of 1139 AD in Fujian province which falls on Sept 2, 2018) can be found at and
