The UK's canal system was designed to carry cargo back in the 1800's. Today, thousands of people hire canal boats (or Narrowboats) to enjoy a unique holiday on the water. In fact, around 15,000 people live on canal boats, making it one of the last remaining nomadic ways to live in the UK.

The chambers you see us steer into are called Locks and built in flights as a way to carry the boat up or downhill in a series of steps. From the top of the locks in Marple, the Upper Peak Forest Canal offers fantastic views across to the Peak District National Park.

In our latest canal boat diaries, we move from Liverpool to the Rufford Branch by narrowboat.
Leaving the Liverpool Link we take narrowboat Silver Fox to rejoin the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, cruising through Bootle, Litherland, Melling, Maghull and Burscough on our way back to the Rufford Branch on our way to the Ribble Link.

Dillon discovers the joys of jumping into the canal, we join the queue for a broken swing bridge passage and we discover the worst fish and chips we've ever tasted!
