Wangdue Phodrang dzong before destroyed by fire on 24 June 2012
The Wangdue Phodrang dzong was founded by the Zhabdrung in 1638 atop a high ridge between the Punak Tsang Chhu and the Dang Chhu, clearly chosen for its commanding view of the valleys below. Legend relates another reason for choosing this spot: as people searched for a site for the dzong, four ravens were seen flying away in four directions. This was considered an auspicious sign, representing the spreading of religion to the four points of the compass.
Wangdi is important in the history of Bhutan because in the early days it was the country's second capital. After Trongsa Dzong was established in 1644, the penlop of Wangdue Phodrang became the third most powerful ruler, after the penlops of Paro and Trongsa. The dzong's strategic position gave the penlop control of the routes to Trongsa, Punakha, Dagana and Thimphu.

Inside Wangdue Phodrang dzong, Bhutan
It's mysteriously quiet inside the monastery - the monks are out and our camera crew was given access to the inner sanctum of the monastery!
Wangdue Phodrang is a town and capital of Wangdue Phodrang District in central Bhutan. It is located in Thedtsho Gewog.
The town shares its name with the dzong, built in 1638 which dominates the district. The name is said to have been given by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who was searching for the best location for a dzong to prevent incursions from the south. At the chosen spot the Shabdrung encountered a boy named Wangdi playing beside the river and hence named the dzong Wangdi's Palace.

Wangdi Phodrang Dzong stands on a ridge where the Dangchu meets the Puna Tshangchhu. The protective deity, Yeshi Gonpo, is supposed to have told Zhabdrung Rinpochhe that he could bring the whole country under his power if he built a dzong on the ridge which has the shape of a sleeping elephant. The Zhabdrung built the Dzong in 1639 and named it as WandiPhodrang Dzong, Wangdu meaning “to bring under one’s power”.
WangdiPhodrang Dzong was enlarged in 1683 by the 4th Desi, Tenzin Rabgye. For a long time, the dzong was the seat of one of Bhutan’s most powerful Dzongpons. Today, it is the headquarters of WangdiPhodrang Dzongkhag.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong
Wangdue Phodrang Dzong , Wangdi , Bhutan
Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan
Video with images of Wangdue Phodrang dzong at the old trade route to the east. The town nearby is at the foot of a mountain where two rivers come together. Because it is on an exposed promontory overlooking the river, it is usually windy and dusty. Wangdue Phodrang is the last settlement before one crosses the mountains which divide the east from the west. Near the town square is a dead end road which leads to the old dzong. It sits atop a high ridge between the Punak river and the Dang river. It has a commanding view of the valleys below including the old trade route to the east.
Wangdue Phodrang Dzong was built in 1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. In the past a wooden cantilever bridge with massive turrets led to the dzong which was built along the end of a ridge above the river. In the second half of the last century a flood has washed away the original structure. Now it has been replaced by a modern two-lane bridge. The hillside below the dzong is covered with cacti which were planted long ago to discourage invaders from climbing the steep slope. The dzong has relatively high walls and narrow courtyards.
The dzong complex consists of three separate structures that follow the contours of the hill. There is only one entrance with a large door and huge prayer wheels on each side. The first courtyard is paved with large flagstones. Along the courtyard are the administrative offices. A central tower divides the dzong in two portions. The dzong was been repaired after a fire in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was repaired again after an earthquake at the end of the nineteenth century which caused severe damage to the buildings. The dzong was reconstructed in the original state.
Unfortunately four years after recording this video a major fire in June 2012 has completely destroyed the centuries old Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. Since the dzong was under renovation before the fire, most of the sacred relics, which were relocated, have been saved. The incident is considered a national tragedy and a huge loss to the country.
THINGS TO DO IN WANGDUE PHODRANG
What invariably comes to our mind when we think of Wangduephodrang is the extreme velocity of wind (thus Windy Phodrang for some!) that sweeps along the valley. Come afternoon, the wind there could be so intense and frightful - so much so, to a psychedelic mind like mine, it inextricably tends to conjure up a gigantic and ferocious dragon up in the sky belching out with all its ire with all its might!
But don’t any of us forget that Wangduephodrang is (and will always be!) one of our greatest national treasures, a jewel in the crown, our national pride. So, read on if you want to make a great weekend GETAWAY or catch up with our ancient history interwoven with myth and folklore of days gone by….
Wangdue Valley -- Bhutan
Wangdue Valley , though less frequented by tourists to Bhutan, distinctly is one of the most attractive spots of the nature, which offers variety of amazingly beautiful sights to nature lovers. It is located east of popular Punakha Valley. Visiting Wangdue Valley along with Punakha, is a double delight.
