• Flesh and Blood, written and performed by Liz Ward. (For the Making Wanneroo Home Exhibition)
As part of the Making Wanneroo Home exhibition, Wanneroo Regional Museum asked members of the local community to contribute their own stories and memories of moving to Wanneroo from another country.
Liz Ward is a local musician who immigrated to Wanneroo from Scotland, via England, in 1992. Liz bought with her the musical influences of her home, in particular traditional Scottish and English folk music, which she combined with lyrics inspired by her experiences of moving to another country. The result was her first album, Rivers of the Heart, which she composed from her home in Wanneroo.
In particular her song Flesh and Blood, playing here, describes how people coming from different countries have the same opportunities when they arrive in Australia to start their new life.

Patrick Morrison presents on the MAAWA Scrimshaw Project at the Australian Institute of Maritime Archaeology 2017 Conference.

Abstract:
Building on its recent projects including the Shipwrecks of Western Australia App (2014-Ongoing), 3DMAPPR (2014-2016) and PRIISMH (2016-2017) projects, the Maritime Archaeology Association of Western Australia (MAAWA), in association with the WA Museum, has recently embarked on a new long-term study focusing on the cultural heritage of the Swan and Canning rivers in the Perth region of Western Australia, named the SCRIMSHAW project (Swan & Canning Rivers Initiative for Maritime and Submerged Heritage through Archaeological Work). This project has the objective of producing a new and enhanced edition of Colin Scrimshaw’s (1981) seminal Swan and Canning River Wrecks, which is intended to serve as a ‘live’ historical resource and management document. This will be accomplished by several means, including the synthesis of MAAWA’s extensive archival resources and an active programme of fieldwork that will employ traditional techniques in conjunction with more recent approaches (such as three-dimensional multi-image photogrammetry) in the documentation of riverine sites. Serving as a capacity-building and skill-sharing exercise for the broader MAAWA membership, the project will also address a range of contemporary theoretical issues relating to the ways in which underwater landscapes comprise heterotopias (literally ‘other places’) that are indexed to a range of broader socio-economic behaviours, such as dumping and abandonment. In this paper, we briefly outline the objectives of the project, its methodology, and early outcomes.
