For more than 100 years, the place for bathing culture in Berlin. Covered beach chair rentals, water slide, vast sunbathing areas on the beach and in the park—here no wishes remain unfulfilled. For more than 100 years, the place for bathing culture in Berlin. Opened in 1907 as a so-called family pool, the lido has over 1,275 metres of sandy beach at its disposal.
Covered beach chair rentals, water slide, vast sunbathing areas on the beach and in the park—here no wishes remain unfulfilled. And when it gets really hot in Berlin, then, within a total area of 355,000 square-metres, up to 30,000 guest bathers can be accommodated. Around ten percent of the area is FKK zone. Beach volleyball and soccer offer themselves up for sport activities. A recreation facility with park area and a promenade invite for strolls and rejuvenation. A boat rental, children’s playground as well as various culinary choices round out the manifold offer. So drop everything, and out to the Wannsee.
The Wannsee beach is Europe's largest outdoor swimming area on an inland body of water. Once you pass through the entrance to the listed Wannsee beach, you will enjoy a majestic view of a spot that has been a favourite place for a summer outing in western Berlin for decades. And although the Wall is long gone and there are other swimming beaches on lakes, the Wannsee continues to draw families to its shores.
The Wannsee Beach is popular not just for its almost mile-long (1,275 metres), 80 metre wide beach filled with bright sand from Baltic, which ensures that there's enough space for every visitor. The Wannsee only becomes deep over a very gradual slope which makes it particularly safe for younger swimmers. A playground also offers a change of pace for the young ones, as do the bungee trampoline stations and snack stands. If you like, you can also rent a wicker beach shelter.

Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Haus der Wannsee Konferenz
Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Haus der Wannsee Konferenz
The luxurious mansion at Großen Wannsee 56-58 was the location for a conference with earth-shattering consequences. In 1942, leading figures in the Nazi government and SS meet here to discuss their so-called Final Solution to the Jewish Question. The exhibition in the House of the Wannsee Conference gives an insight into this criminal meeting, and how the plan was put into practice. It details the genocide perpetrated on the European Jews through the use of original documents and audiovisual presentations.
In 1914, pharmaceutical manufacturer Ernst Marlier builds his new luxury villa, and a few years later anti-Republican and right wing industrialist Friedrich Minoux takes ownership of it. He sells the villa to an SS foundation in 1941 for use as a guest house. The following year, National Socialists are already planning the Wannsee Conference. After the Second World War, the villa is handed over to the political party SPD who establish an educational centre called the August-Bebel-Institute. It serves as a school between 1952 and 1982. In 1982, Richard von Weizsäcker, Berlin's mayor, designates the house a memorial, and since 1992, on the 50th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference, it becomes an official museum and educational centre.
The first impression of the mansion is deceptive; the House of the Wannsee Conference is like any other provincial country estate – a magnificent mansion built in the Italian country house style. Inside, the rooms are well-lit and elegant, giving no hint of the events which happened here. The first exhibition room gives information about the people who attended the conference, along with documents about anti-semitism and racism in the 1920s. Go through the hall to see items of Third Reich propaganda such as posters and leaflets. Further three rooms are devoted to the collaboration with the Nazi leaders, along with archive material from Eastern Europe which has only been on public display since the 1990s.

Wannsee - In A Berlin Minute (Week 158) [HD]
-- --
The famous Berlin lake Wannsee is really two lakes, Kleiner Wannsee and Grosser Wannsee, that are bights of the river Havel.
In this video I only show a small part of Grosser Wannsee (Large Wannsee), including the popular public beach Strandbad Wannsee - after hours.
There would have been a lot more to see, but according to my new to not go overboard (no pun intended), I decided to keep it simple and not include the villa, where the Wannsee Conference took place or any of the islands and bridges.
What fascinates me most about this area, that during the East / West Germany split, it was the only real big get away from the city nature that people in West Berlin could access without leaving the country and getting the permission to drive through East Germany to reach West Germany. Kind of mind blowing.
If time allows I plan to return to the lakes for a boat tour and to visit the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island). At this point it seems that winter has quickly turned into early summer. It seems the whole city has breathed a sigh of relief.
The music is a track from Soundtrack Pro mixed with the natural sounds around the lake.

20th January 1942: Nazi leaders meet at the Wannsee Conference
SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich called the meeting, in which he outlined the deportation of European Jews to extermination camps in Poland where they would be systematically murdered.
Six months earlier, on the 31st July 1941, Hermann Goering had ordered Heydrich as his second-in-command to submit plans for the implementation of the projected final solution of the Jewish question. Heydrich was a trusted member of the Nazi elite, and had been referred to by Hitler as the man with the iron heart. He had already helped to organise Kristallnacht, established Jewish ghettos in Nazi-controlled territories, and command the Einsatzgruppen that were responsible for millions of Jewish deaths prior to his planning of the Final Solution.
Heydrich originally planned for the Wannsee Conference to take place on 9th December 1941, but it was postponed due to the USSR’s counter-offensive in the Battle of Moscow and the entry of the USA into the war. Fifteen representatives from a variety of government ministries attended the delayed meeting on the 20th January instead.
By this time hundreds of thousands of Jews had already been killed in the east, and the planning and construction of extermination camps had already begun. The meeting was, therefore, more to ensure coordination between the various government agencies in implementing the deportations.
Minutes from the meeting survive as what is known as the Wannsee Protocol, although the language was edited so that mass extermination was never explicitly recorded.
