Curaçao - Explore the Westside in One Day - Part 2 | Dive Curacao Vlog
Dive in to explore the incredible underwater world of Curaçao's west side!
Exploring the west side of the island in one day is a pretty ambitious task but if you are just going to be on the island for one day or just have a rental car for one day, this is an excellent way to explore the beauty of Curacao.
For those of you that arrive on a cruise ship and like to explore Curacao on their own rather than with an organized tour, make sure that you reserve a rental car up front.
Bring water, comfortable shoes and flip flops, lots of sunscreens, a snack, and of course your swimsuit and snorkels. If you have sensitive feet, you might want to bring water shoes as well.
Shete Boka National Park - Get on the main road from Willemstad towards Westpunt. Follow this road until you see the Shete Boka National Park sign along the road. It's quite a long way (26 miles), but you'll see some great scenery as you go, including Mt. Christoffel.
Shete Boka National Park is located on Curacao's north coast. It's an absolutely amazing place with breathtaking views. There's a small fee to enter the park (US$ 5.50 p.p.) but it is well worth it. You can also buy a brochure with a map. The three bokas (coves) to visit are the sea cave at Boka Tabla, Boka Pistol with its crashing powerful waves, and Boka Wandomi with its very impressive landscape.
You'll want to carry water with you as you explore the area as there is little shelter from the sun.
Knip Beach - When you leave Shete Boka, turn right out of the exit. Follow the road until you see signs for Playa Kenepa, also known as Grote Knip and Playa Abou. It's a free public beach. The overlook is breathtaking, and the water calm and clear.
If you are adventurous, there are a couple of spots to jump off the stone cliffs. Just be careful! The best snorkeling is at the wall on the left side. There's also Landhuis Knip to visit if time and interest allow.
Lunch - For lunch, you can backtrack a little on the main road, watch closely for signs to Lodge Kura Hulanda right after you pass through the wooded valley area, and then turn left at the ball field to find your way to Sol Food. You'll get a great lunch and some friendly local advice from Sunshine. They're only open Friday-Sunday.
If you're there on another weekday, try Restaurant Landhuis Misje. They are open from noon to 8:00 pm, except on Tuesday. It's a small restaurant serving traditional Caribbean comfort food.
Lagun Beach - After lunch head back towards Knip Beach and look for signs for Lagun Beach, which is a smaller beach but a great spot to snorkel. If you be there between 4:00 and 5:00 PM there is a great chance that you see turtles. Around this time the fishermen return and they always feed their leftovers to the turtles.
If you still have some time left, as you head back towards Willemstad watch for signs to Jan Kok or St. Willibrordus. Here there is an old salt plantation along the road and most of the time there are a lot of Flamingos feeding in the salt ponds. See as well our blog post Flamingos, Curacao's exotic bright pink birds.
Willemstad - Depending on your energy level and on how long you have on the island, you may still have some time left to explore Willemstad.
Cross the Queen Emma Bridge, one of the oldest pontoon bridges around, to get to Punda. You may like to take a drink at the waterfront Iguana Cafe, and watch the ships enter Willemstad's harbor. They get impressively close and it is always a miracle to see how they manoeuvre in and out.
Alternatively, you may like to enter Fort Amsterdam, the large yellow historic building south of Iguana Cafe, site of the Governor's Palace and the 1769 Dutch Reformed Church.
For dinner, we suggest Restaurant De Gouveneur at the Otrobanda side, or go to one of the many restaurants at the Pietermaai District.
An area frequently missed by tourists is the Pietermaai area. Many of the run-down buildings have been totally restored over the last six years and turned into colorful apartments, boutique hotels, restaurants, and trendy bars. Mundo Bizarro is a cool restaurant with Cuban decor, daily happy hour from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, and live music every Saturday.
A few doors down, you will find Miles Jazz Cafe. They offer a selection of cigars, board games and, of course, the music of jazz legend Miles Davis on vinyl, or live music.
Other restaurants in Pietermaai are 27 Bar & Teras, oceanfront restaurant Bijblauw, Blue Bird Cafe for bites and drinks, and many more. For more information on restaurants bars and events, see Pietermaai District's website.

DIVING IN CURAÇAO | BEST DIVE SITE | Caribbean
Most dive sites in Curaçao are easily accessible from the shore. However, the best dive site is one of the hardest to reach, as the there are no roads going there. The only way to get there is by boat, which can be quite a rough trip. But, worth it!! The Eastpoint of Curaçao hosts one of the most unspoilt reefs in the Caribbean. Because of its location at land's end, the different currents provide for a unique situation where the water is full of nutrition. That's why you will see an abundance of fish and healthy coral. Beware, currents are strong so always go with a professional dive tour. I was lucky enough to dive there once. We did 2 boat dives. Hope you enjoy the footage.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Black Coral Garden | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
Located in the area of Soto - Curacao, between Hell's Corner and Rediho, this dive site is named for the rare and nearly extinct black corals. This west end scuba diving site features black-coral trees, sea fans and bottlebrush.
The skeletons of black corals are dark; hence the description as ‘black,’ but the polyps have varying colors — red, white, orange, green and yellow. Since they lack symbiotic algae, black corals can be found thousands of feet deep.
This dive is generally done parallel with the wall, as an out-and-back to the boat. It’s an easy dive site, with little to no current to speak of when we dove it. As with most wall dives, it’s easy to slip down too deep while admiring all of the beautiful and rare corals and other marine life. We always want to be careful around corals to avoid damaging them, but take extra caution in this spot in particular, as black corals take over a century to re-establish. Admire these rare beauties and keep a close watch on your buoyancy.

Sustainable Tourism Curacao | Project AWARE Adopt a Dive Site Initiative | Dive Curacao
“Scuba divers have a deep connection to the ocean and a desire to want to protect it. We love to mix the passion for ocean adventure with conservation,” says Joanne Marston, Community Engagement Manager at Project AWARE, a global movement for ocean protection.
“The community of Curacao are true leaders in the fight to protect what we love. Together dive centres on the island have united to protect their local dive sites from the onslaught of trash. They realise that conservation cannot be done in isolation – it takes the collaborative efforts of all to really make change,” Marston added.
In 2017, 47 separate clean-ups events were organized removing 1,517kg’s (3,344 lbs) of marine debris by 504 volunteers made up of locals and tourists. In 2018, due to an expanded initiative, the CHATA Dive Task Force will be organizing even more events in the hope to bridge the gap in knowledge through the Dive Against Debris™ Specialty Course and public outreach for a sustainable and a responsible Curaçao that will help inform and drive policy change.
According to CHATA CEO, Miles Mercera, “Our island’s subaquatic life is one of the many things that sets our island apart from the others in the Caribbean. So, it is of immense importance that we all work together as a sustainable community to conserve our ocean. The commitment of the Dive Task Force to the Dive Against Debris and Adopt a Dive Site Initiative is the first step for sustaining and spreading awareness of our island’s ocean life. With the assistance and teamwork of the entire community I am certain that we can make this initiative bigger, create a sustainable change and provide the upcoming generation a healthier ecological marine life.”
If you’re a certified diver, help protect the future of Curacao’s sea by joining one of the CHATA Dive Task Force members for a free monthly Dive Against Debris™ clean-up here on Curaçao to collect/remove marine debris and report important data. Together, we are making a difference one dive at a time. Let’s enjoy our coral reefs but let’s protect them for future generations!

Discover Curacao - It is a Macro Paradise | Underwater Photo and Video | Dive Curacao
Dive Curacao - An alternative to Bonaire for the Underwater Photographer and is one of the 5 Best Places For Macro Scuba Diving In The Caribbean & Atlantic according to Scuba Diving Magazine
Curaçao is a photographers dream, offering old world Dutch Caribbean architecture, wonderful island culture, wildlife and varied underwater dive sites all in one package.
Curacao is perhaps getting a little more dive press in the past few years and it is certainly a dive destination you might want to consider.
Regardless of where you choose to stay, the diving will not disappoint you. Like Bonaire this is a “macro” island. Shark and Manta sightings are rare. But all the photogenic small stuff is here. My favorite are the Frogfish, Longlured and occasionally Occelated (I think they are easier to find in the winter months). These can be great subjects for wide-angle close ups. Seahorses are for the sharp eyed, but I have yet to photograph a Pipefish. If you do a lot of diving, I think it is likely you will find a Seahorse and/or Frogfish. Also if you are good with your camera and buoyancy, the dive masters are more likely to share their little secrets.
Common Macro Subjects of Curacao
Frogfish, Flamingo tongue cowries, Christmas-tree worms, Gobies, Lettuce sea slugs, Arrow crabs, Blennies
Average Visibility: Like most destinations, the visibility ranges based on weather. You can expect viz from 50 to 100 feet. Average Water Temperature: You can expect low to mid-80s in summer and mid-to hight 70s in winter. Weather: Summers are warm with average temperatures of 85 degrees. Temperatures tend to drop to the mid-70s in winter.

Superior Producer Dive Curacao with Goby-divers.com
in 1978 just outside the busy port of Willemstad, off the island of Curacao Superior Producer was sank filled with clothes and drinks, headed for Venezuela for the Christmas shopping season. It was overloaded and left against the advice of its captain. The cargo shifted in the oceans swells and quickly sank on a even keel.
He sits on a sand plateau 60m/196 from the shore, at a depth of 32 m/105ft.
After all these years on the bottom of the ocean he has been transformed full of vivid corals, tube sponges, you can see barracudas and tarpons swimming around.
The marine life fully appreciate the impact this wreck has on the undersea environment.

CURACAO ISLAND BEACH TOUR! ???????? Blue water, beach pigs and cliff jumping.
We spent a day touring around the west side of Curacao to visit multiple beaches and sites on the west side of the island with Irie Tours. This is the perfect tour for you if you don’t want to rent a car and want an affordable and fun tour company to take you around the island. We started at Shete Boka National Park to see the incredible waves! We then went to Playa Piskadó where the fisherman bring their catch. There are also many snorkelers here. Next up we went just up the road to go cliff jumping in the crystal clear water. After that we go to visit one of the best beaches on the island, Grote Knip where we went swimming. Lastly we headed to Playa Porto Marie to have some lunch and lounge on the beach, where we also encounter some beach pigs!
Irie Tours:
Irie Tours has a wide variety of fun tours to offer, from east to west and everything in between. From the planning stage, to the day of your trip and beyond, Irie Tours’ team will do everything we can to ensure you have a wonderful island vacation! Irie Tours will do this by making our tours fun and treating customers like family! Irie Tours received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 5 years in a row since 2013.

Shete Boka Park:
This is an area adjoining the Christoffelpark covering more than 10 kilometers of the rocky wave-exposed north coast of the island and with some 10 pocket beaches where 3 species of sea turtles are known to lay eggs. The most well-known and favorite inlet for visitors is Boka Tabla. If you enjoy getting off the beaten track and into rugged countryside, you will love National Park Shete Boka. The park begins at stunning Boka Tabla, where huge waves thunder into an underground cavern. Steps cut into the rocks lead you directly into the mouth of the cavern; you can sit on the very edge and watch the surf roll in. After you peek inside the cavern you can walk along the limestone bluffs above for a spectacular view of Curacao's rugged north coast.
Playa Piskadó:
This tiny fishermen's beach is also popular for snorkeling and diving and has some good photo ops of the boats and nets. Manchineel trees provide some shade. A small snack bar is open on the weekend. Entrance to the water is somewhat rocky.
Grote Knip:
Grote Knip (also called Playa Abou in Papiamento, translation: Beach in a valley) is a beach on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, located at the western side of the island, between the villages of Westpunt and Lagun. The beach gives way to a small lagune between high rocks. It is freely accessible to the public. The beach is used as a starting point for snorkeling, due to the presence of a coral reef nearby.
Playa Porto Mari:
Playa PortoMari is a beautiful sandy bay to be found on the private estate of Plantages PortoMari at the west coast of the tropical island of Curacao (in the Caribbean). Its white coral sand beach with clear and calm water is a true paradise for water lovers. The unique ‘double reef’ is easily accesible from the shore providing a fascinating snorkel and dive site. For landlubbers, three nature trails (the Seru Matteo Trail, the History Trail and the Bird Trail) have their starting point at the beach’s parking lot. They are ideal for hiking but can also be conquered by mountain bike.
