Van Life : Visiting Yoho National Park | Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge, and Wapta Falls
Today on, Lives Unscripted, we head over to Yoho National Park. First we enjoy Emerald Lake and the Natural Bridge. Then, we hike to Wapta Falls, an amazing waterfall in Yoho National Park.

Lorsque l'on se dirige vers l'Ouest sur l'Autoroute 1, il n'y a pas de panneau indiquant l'entrée de ce site puisqu'il n'y a aucune voie qui permet le virage à gauche. Alors, il faut continuer sur environ 3 km et faire demi-tour.
L'aire de stationnement se trouve à 2 km de l'Autoroute 1.
Cette cascade est la plus imposante de la rivière Kicking Horse avec ses 30 m de hauteur et ses 150 m de largeur.
Elle est accessible par un sentier relativement facile de 2,3 km qui traverse une forêt luxuriante.
A l'entrée du sentier, une affiche nous avise de la présence possible d'ours étant donné que c'est la saison des baies.
Avant d'entreprendre notre randonnée, nous nous sommes donc assurés que nous avions en mains tout le nécessaire pour éloigner cette imposante bête sauvage. En espérant que l'occasion ne se présente pas.
Nous prenons même la précaution de suivre d'autres randonneurs afin de maximiser nos chances.
Cependant, nous avons constaté que le sentier était tout de même assez fréquenté. Alors, comme nous avancions d'un pas rapide, nous avons devancé les randonneurs que nous suivions en espérant en rencontrer d'autres sur le trajet. Ce fut le cas. Ouf!
Je ne vous cacherai pas que l'oreille demeurait attentive au moindre bruit qui provenait de la forêt.
Il y avait plusieurs amoncellements de filaments noirs suspendus aux arbustes qui nous laissaient croire que c'était des poils d'ours. Cette sensation nous rendait encore plus nerveux! Il semblerait que ceux-ci provenaient du sommet des épinettes. Tant mieux!
Deux kilomètres et demi c'est court, mais quand on surveille sans cesse nos arrières, le parcours nous paraît plus long. Pourtant, nous avions accéléré le pas au cas où ...
Bon, revenons au sentier! Vers la fin du parcours, une clôture a été érigée en bordure de la falaise. Il suffit de longer cette clôture afin d'avoir une vue impressionnante du haut de cette cascade.
Par la suite, le sentier nous ramène vers la forêt et descend abruptement au pied de la cascade. La prudence est de mise car il y a parfois des racines présentes au sol.
Nous arrivons enfin sur une plage rocailleuse. La vue n'est pas obstruée, nous permettant ainsi de profiter d'un panorama exceptionnel. Le Mont Hunter se dresse derrière la cascade.
Cette imposante cascade déverse son contenu avec une puissance inouïe et un son assourdissant. Difficile de s'en approcher sans qu'elle nous éclabousse.
Nous avons pu observer un arc-en-ciel se former du côté gauche de la cascade, à sa base.
Il est possible d'escalader les collines afin d'avoir une vue panoramique du secteur. Le sentier qui y mène peut être cependant très glissant.
Le retour demande quelques efforts car la montée est constante. Cependant, c'est de courte durée. La dénivellation du sentier n'est presque plus perceptible après 400 m.
Je ne vous cacherai pas que nous étions très heureux d'apercevoir le stationnement au bout du sentier! Aucun ours ne s'était pas présenté à nous!

Wapta Falls, Yoho National Park
Wapta Falls is located in the western part of Yoho National Park. It is here that the Kicking Horse River thunders down 30m over a span 150m wide. The amount of water flowing here makes Wapta Falls the 3rd largest waterfall (by volume) in Canada.

Trailhead
Gravel path leaves from south edge of parking area. It is marked with a National parks trail signpost.
Trail
An easy stroll along a level path for 1.9 kilometres to the top of the falls. From here, a trail heads back into the forest for a bit before heading to the river and the bottom of the falls. You lose about 60 metres in elevation on the way down, and regain it coming back up. Worth the trip.

Incredible Winter Hike into Wapta Falls, Yoho National Park
Join us on a beautiful winter hike to a stunning frozen waterfall. Located 20 km east of Golden, British Columbia, Wapta Falls offers a breathtaking vista in winter. Located in Yoho National Park; parks pass required for access.
From the winter trailhead, set right alongside the Trans Canada Highway, it's roughly nine kilometres (return) to complete this hike. The terrain is easy; mostly flat with one descent/ascent.
Snowshoes are often needed, though just as often the trail is hard-packed and good winter boots or trail crampons will suffice.
You'll be able to get up-close to the falls—but be careful walking on around the open water. Dogs are permitted on-leash only. No washrooms or facilities during winter.
