Showcase: 'War Childhood Museum' opens in Sarajevo
Conflict is always in the news, but a museum that's just opened in Sarajevo digs deeper than the headlines. It offers insight into the horrors of war through the eyes of children. It's brought together the belongings of people who spent their childhoods in the besieged city and helps us understand what war did to their lives.

War Childhood Museum in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The collection at the War Childhood Museum is comprised of items that tell interesting and touching stories of how children grew up during the war that shook Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1996. The War Childhood Museum was awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the museum world – the Council of Europe Museum Prize 2018.
The museum’s current collection is made up of items that began to be collected in 2010 and were used by Jasminka Halilović when writing her book, Childhood During War: Sarajevo 1992-1995, which was published in 2013.
The book has been translated into several languages and the public in BiH and elsewhere in the world has taken great interest in what children experienced during the war in BiH. This created the need to establish a museum that provides permanent exhibits of keepsakes used by children who grew up in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1996.
The museum first opened in January 2017 in what used to be the Logavina Community Center in the old town.
Items on display include spitz ballet shoes that were received as a gift during the war, a half-burned book that was salvaged from Sarajevo’s Vijećnica, canned and packaged foods, lead stoves, dolls, a swing used by a little girl in a basement….
Every item is accompanied by its own story and the items are rotated so that 50 different pieces are on display at any given time.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, War Childhood
War Childhood is an interactive project. Its goal is to present and explore the collective experience of the children of Sarajevo. The idea was quickly embraced by people whose upbringing was spent, in part at least, under siege in Sarajevo. Some 1,500 war children now living in 35 countries round the world responded with their memories in just 3 months. The end result will be a book -- a treasury of the memories of Sarajevo's children.
War Childhood Museum Documents the Most Innocent Victims of War
It may be the world's only museum that looks at the lives of children who grew up during wars. Founded in 2017 in Sarajevo two decades after the end of the Bosnian War, the War Childhood Museum opened its newest temporary exhibit earlier this month in Washington. Azra Dolberry spoke to war survivors and museum curators about why the world needs to learn more about the most innocent victims of war.

The majority of journalists around the world have chosen to develop their subject on controversial and sensational themes: violence, war, crime. But all these facts represent only 1% of our world and its inhabitants, forgetting the remaining 99% of which we never speak.
I chose to visit every country on the planet and film them to present them in High Definition format but in a raw way, without music, without comment. Simply, reality in all its truth. Thus, you will be able to make your own idea of the world in which you live.
Currently, I have already visited nearly 170 countries and my world tour continues thanks to you who follow me.
