By Andrew Stuart: SOLDIERS from Staffordshire are preparing to move home.
The 3rd Battalion the Mercian regiment are going to be relocating to Germany later this year.
They have recruited around Staffordshire for more than three centuries, but this weekend they marched through the city as a goodbye to an area that has supported them.

A number of generations of the Weaver family lived in Curry Rivel in Somerset. The headstone surmounted by a cross in the churchyard is that of my 4 x great-grandparents, Robert Weaver and his wife, Sarah, nee Street, and one of their sons.
My great-grandfather, Henry James Weaver, is remembered on the War Memorial in the village and also inside St Andrew's Church. He was accidentally killed in WW1, nine months after he'd stood at the altar inside the same church to marry his bride, Florence Smale.
Other family surnames associated with Curry Rivel include Twogood and Fidoe.

Pte Gavin Elliott
THE body of Rotherham hero Gavin Elliott who was killed in during a battle in war-torn Afghanistan has been flown back to Britain.
The coffin of the first serviceman from the town to be killed in Afghanistan arrived at RAF Lineham in Wiltshire aboard a Hercules transport plane and was unloaded to the sound of a lone bugler playing the Last Post.
Pte Elliott was serving with the A (Grenadier) Company, 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) when he was killed in a firefight with insurgents in Helmand province.

Save Fenton Town Hall in Stoke-On-Trent
The iconic landmark in Fenton Stoke-On-Trent faces a somewhat uncertain future after being put onto the market by the Ministry of Justice following it's closure as a magistrates court.
The former Town Hall has attracted interest from the Fenton residents, who in conjunction with a descendant of the original benefactor, William Meath Baker, have started meeting to form plans for the takeover of the building with a view to re-open it for community use.

At the beginning of 1886 William Meath Baker offered to build a new town hall for Fenton. In April 1888 he submitted plans to Fenton Local Board of Health for three new streets which were subsequently names Station Street, Baker Street and Gimson Street.
The new town hall lay at the centre of the new development. It was a large two storied building of red brick with stone dressings, designed in a combination of late Gothic and Tudor styles by Robert Scrivener & Sons. The main block of six bays has a small central gable and is flanked by lower gabled side wings with oriel windows to the upper floors.
The area in front of the town hall was laid out as a square.
In the last two decades of the 19th century, there was comparatively little building in Fenton, (fn. 28) but in this period a town centre emerged around the town hall, built in 1888 and Christ Church, rebuilt in 1890. (fn. 29) Some streets south-west of the town centre, the present Masterson, Alma, Welby, Nelson, Marlborough, Blenheim, Evelyn, and Crawfurd Streets, which had been partially laid out by the late 1870's, (fn. 30) had been built up with terraced houses, with small gardens or yards at the rear, by 1898. (fn. 31) Houses had also been built along Regent (now Smithpool) Road connecting Mount Pleasant with the present City Road stretch of the Stoke-Uttoxeter road. (fn. 32) In the north of the Fentons, at Fenton Low east of Victoria Road, Dimmock, Coburg, and Alfred Streets, which had been laid out by the late 1870's, had been built up with terraced houses by 1898. (fn. 33) At Heron Cross the present Hines Street and Chilton Street were laid out and built up in this period, (fn. 34) while in the area known as Golden Hill on the north side of the main road, where Queen (now Burnham) Street had been built by the late 1870's, (fn. 35) the present Berdmore and Hollings Streets, lying parallel to and east of Queen Street, had also been built up by 1898. (fn. 36)
John Paul Barnett, Cannon Maker and Concussionist, Part 5
Barney made cannons of all sizes that could be shot, for all kinds of customers. He also performed at over 100 concerts of The 1812 Overture as the guest concussionist, firing 16 cannons at the exact places called for in the score. SOUTH BEND - J. Paul Barnett, 76, of South Bend, passed away at 2:58 a.m. Monday, October 25th, in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Barnett was born on June 5, 1934, in South Bend, and had resided in the area his lifetime. On September 4, 1976, in South Bend, he married Carol L. Best, who survives. Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Rebecca Ann Best of North Liberty and Patricia Lynne (Robert) DeMeyer of South Bend; four grandchildren, Rebecca S. Barnett of Elkhart, IN, Steven, Hannah and Kevin DeMeyer of South Bend; a sister, Lois Jean Hanna of Brooksville, Florida; two nieces, Roberta Van Sickle and Luanne Hanna. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Edith Fern (McGuire) Barnett; and a son, John P. Barnett Jr., who passed away Dec. 3, 1991. Mr. Barnett was owner of South Bend Replicas, Inc., in South Bend prior to his death. Paul graduated from Central High School, Franklin College and Ball State University. In his younger years he was an Indiana State Trooper, U.S. Army veteran, a high school English teacher, a vocational musician in local venues, and other things that evolved into a career working in the field of antique artillery. As a manufacturer, his work was invited into many federal, state, local and private historical projects. The sailing ships Lady Washington, Kalmar Nyckel, Pride of Baltimore, and H.M.S. Rose have been among client ships. Historic forts and sites using antique replica artillery made by Paul for their living history programs include Fort Ticonderoga, Colonial Williamsburg, Sutter's Fort and Fort Ross in California, and Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments at St. Augustine, and Mission San Luis at Tallahassee. Museum and Monument projects have included DuPont's Hagley Museum and West Point. Movies in which artillery by Barnett has appeared include the feature film Glory; Spielberg and Disney have been repeat clients. In 1967, symphony conductor Erich Kunzel approached Barnett about possibly producing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture live in accordance with the original 1880 score and plan, into which 16 muzzle-loading cannon shots had been specifically written to be fired with musical precision from an electric switch panel constructed for an 1881 event that failed to materialize. Also in 1967, Paul had undertaken research on Lyle guns, pieces of light artillery developed in 1978 for projecting lifelines to and from distressed ships. A sharing of efforts by Kunzel and Barnett led Barnett into a secondary career of performing with many orchestras and conductors doing historically valid 1812 performances in the United States and as far away as Lenigrad, Russia. In 1990, under invitation of the Russian government and within earshot of the composer's grave, Barnett was delighted to assist in bringing the Overture home in a worldwide celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Tchaikovsky's birth, in the city (now again St. Petersburg) of his youth. The annual Kunzel/Barnett collaboration continued until 2009. Other conductors who became variously involved across the years included Andrew Kostelanetz, Henry Mancini, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin and others at places such as Wolf Trap, Ravinia, Saratoga, Bethel Woods, Mann, Blossom, Meadow Brook, and other performing art centers. Paul's published work includes a reference catalog on antique artillery, a book, The Lifesaving Guns of David Lyle, and various articles in professional and trade journals. Some of his memberships were in the U.S. Lifesaving Service Heritage Association, the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, the National Rifle Association, The American Federation of Musicians, and the Company of Military Historians. Also the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 28, in the Hanley & Sons Southwest Chapel Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the funeral home, with burial following at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, with military services.

TMA returns German item stolen in WWII
An 18th-century porcelain centerpiece that has been on display at the Toledo Museum of Art since the 1950s has been returned to its rightful owner in Europe.
Museum and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the porcelain centerpiece, believed to have been stolen from a German castle that was hidden during World War II, is being transferred to the Dresden Museum.
The museum said it was unaware the Nereid Sweetmeat Stand, a Meissen-manufactured centerpiece from the famed Swan Service, was stolen.

STORYLINE:
Former American prisoners of war (POWs) visited the Center of the Tokyo Raids and War Damage museum in Tokyo on Wednseday.
Five American former POWs, who were shot down and imprisoned as they carried out bombing raids in Japan during World War II, viewed exhibits and met a survivor of the Tokyo air raids which killed more than 100,000 people.
Haruyo Nihei, who survived Tokyo air raids, was only eight year old when her neighborhood of Tokyo was burned down by a US air raid.
She said she has no grudges towards the former US pilots, and is happy that the POWs decided to return Japan despite the harsh treatment they endured while in captivity.
Fiske Hanley II, a 25 year-old second lieutenant from Texas flying on a B-29, was shot down and captured in Fukuoka, western Japan.
He recalls being crammed into tiny cells together with other prisoners and constantly beaten and interrogated.
The five American former POWs returned to Japan this week to visit the former camp sites and the location where they were shot down as a part of the regular friendship program.

Leek War Memorial dedication 1925
These are scenes in Leek on Thursday 20th August 1925, showing the crowds assembling to watch the unveiling of the Nicholson War Memorial.
The Monument as it is commonly called, was presented to the town by Sir Arthur and Lady Nicholson in memory of their son - Lieutenant Basil Leigh Nicholson - and other local men killed in the First World War.
The memorial, which is built of portland stone and stands 90 feet high, was designed by Messrs Thomas Worthington & Sons of Manchester. The tablet was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Charles Harrington GBE DSO and was dedicated by the Bishop of Stafford. Lieutenant General Harrington is then seen chatting to old soldiers.
