Pictorial Parade No. 66 (1957)
On September 5 1957, Viscount Cobham became the 9th Governor General of New Zealand. His birth name was Charles John Lyttelton. Lyttelton was born in Kensington, London, the son of John Lyttelton, 9th Viscount Cobham, and Violet Yolande Leonard. He had a family connection with New Zealand, through his great-grandfather George Lyttelton, 4th Baron Lyttelton, who was chairman of the Canterbury Association and contributed financially to the early development of Christchurch. Hagley Park is named after their family estate, and the port town of Lyttelton bears his great-grandfather's name.
Although from an aristocratic background, he proved popular. He was seen as an outdoors man with a sporting prowess in cricket, and golf, and a competent rugby judge. He was good with a gun and an enthusiastic fly fisherman, all attributes that resonated well with New Zealanders. His prowess in Cricket stemmed from his cricket career in England where he played for and captained Worcestershire Country Cricket Club in the 1930's. Significant events during his tenure included the independence of Western Samoa and the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Cobham was served by three Prime Ministers: Sidney Holland (1949–1957), Keith Holyoake (1957 and 1960–1972) and Walter Nash (1957–1960). He was most careful to not comment on controversial matters, and had a good working relationship with all three. He was instrumental in setting up the Outward Bound outdoor education organisation in New Zealand, opening the Outward Bound school in Anakiwa near Picton in September 1962, which bears his name. He served until 13 September 1962. Cobham Oval in Whangarei and Cobham Court in Porirua are named after him. Cobham was married to Elizabeth Alison Makeig-Jones, with whom he had 8 children.
This film clip here, Pictorial Parade 66, produced by the National Film Unit, shows the arrival of the Cobham family in Wellington at the start of his tenure as Governor-General. The National Film Unit was established to publicise New Zealand's participation and achievements during the Second World War. After 1945 the Film Unit expanded from producing weekly newsreels to making documentaries and films to the order of Government Departments. During its existence the Film Unit produced films for national organisations as well as many films on its own initiative. The private film industry in New Zealand relied heavily on the National Film Unit's extensive film processing facilities.

ANZAC Day Parade, 2016 Brisbane
ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served. Observed on 25 April each year, Anzac Day was originally to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
With the coming of the Second World War, Anzac Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war. The meaning of Anzac Day today includes the remembrance of all soldiers killed in military operations.
The Delhi Ride - for Picton hospital
To bring more attention to the cuts proposed for Picton hospital, the County's Frere Brothers created this talk'n blues tune 'The Delhi Ride'. The song was created by Mark Despault, Robin Lunn and Alec Lunn with a bit of inspiration from their friend Washboard Hank's tune.
NOTE: no real bums were used in the making of this video :)

Welcome to Bulls. The quintessential small New Zealand town with a long history and a great community feel. It's true - approximately 14,000 cars pass through Bulls every day, and those who stop find a wonderful selection of shops, cafés and eateries.
For the outdoors type, the beautiful Rangitikiei River offers great walks and riding. Bulls was named after James Bull, a carpenter from Chelsea, who arrived in 1857. Bulls became a township in 1873. The rest is history.
A testament to the popularity of the town is the fact that a new retail development is under construction, incorporating a large supermarket and new service station.

Lake Mahinupa
Lake Mahinapua is a tranquil lake 10kms south of Hokitika, New Zealand. We stayed in the DOC campground. It was a calm morning so I sent the Phantom up for a few shots.

Bridge to Nowhere
This simple concrete bridge symbolises a failed attempt at back country pioneering by a community of returned World War One servicemen and their families. The bridge now stands as a moving memorial to the abandoned hopes and dreams of these servicemen that settled the remote Mangapurua and Kaiwhakauka Valleys under a government rehabilitation programme.
Transforming virgin native forest into farmland, the endeavours of these soldier settlers provided this area with its unique history. Although they were initially prosperous, the farms were ultimately abandoned owing to the refusal of the council to maintain the road.
