Romsey War Horse Memorial Unveiled by Princess Anne - 2015
The Army Remount Service was established in 1887 to provide animals for military service. It played an important role in South Africa in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, but it faced its major challenge in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I. Between the outbreak of war and Armistice in 1918, the Remount Service dealt with more than a million horses and mules in the United Kingdom, over half of which were imported from North America.
In order to handle these animals, a string of camps was set up across the country. The first of these was on the outskirts of Romsey. (There was another immediately north of Southampton at Swaythling.)
The Romsey camp was established at the summit of Pauncefoot Hill, in the vicinty of Ranvilles Farm and received its first horses in March 1915. By the end of the war it had processed about 120,000 or around 10% of the animals acquired by the Remount Service. Its primary function was to train horses and mules for war service. The camp at Swaythling was responsible for collecting them from camps all over England and shipping them to France.
The Romsey camp consisted of ten squadrons each containing 210 men; a headquarters unit and a veterinary hospital. The complement was 2101 men. In addition there were local civilian workers who undertook basic domestic duties. The camp had a canteen, a YMCA, reading rooms, a library, a hospital and its own Post Office.

Some horses came from other camps in England, but those from North America were usually unloaded at Devonport and then came to Romsey by train. Since they were often semi-wild, their transit through the town centre from the railway to the camp must have been unpleasant for the residents.
On arrival the horses were rested in an enclosure known as the kraal and after two or three weeks, their training commenced. When ready, they were despatched to Southampton for service in Europe.

In 1918, Romsey camp was enlarged to handle demobilisation. This created disciplinary problems and Colonel Edward Sandars was appointed as Commandant there, because he had a good record for handling such problems.
His daughter Nancy who was born in 1914 remembers the camp and living at Romsey. She has provided some photographs of the family's time here and will be amongst the people attending the unveiling of the horse. To learn more about this distinguished lady, go to nancysandars.org.uk
Warhorse Memorial Unveiling
Princess Anne unveils the war horse memorial to the some 110,00 horses and mules trained at the remount depot just outside Romsey.
It sits in the memorial park, which was built using hard core from the remains of the camp on Pauncefoot Hill.

Romsey Remembering
There are one hundred and fifty-two names on the First World War section of the Romsey memorial; this is their story
The Romsey School History Club began researching the names on the Romsey War memorial three years ago. We discovered the unique stories of many of these men and decided after a year of research that the best way to present our findings was through a film, and so we began the long process of filming scenes , interviewing local historians and gathering pictures. Over the course of more than 500 hours, we have amassed more than 300 takes; taken a trip to France and Belgium and even built a replica trench that is seen in the film.
I've been filming for several years with this being my largest project to date. My other works include various short films and sketches including our own period drama, The Manor. In addition to this I've covered various events both in and out of school and am looking to expand my projects with another longer film in pre-production for next year.

A new statue evoking the bravery and sacrifice of horses in the First World War was unveiled in Hampshire at the weekend. The Princess Royal performed the ceremony in Romsey, a town that supplied more than a hundred thousand horses to the British Army a century ago

War Animal Memorial Pozieres Fundraising Paver video
In 2017 the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) established the first Official Australian war animal memorial in the heart of the WW1 Battlefields at the windmill site near the town of Pozieres in FRANCE.
It is the place which Charles C.E Bean described as “ a ridge more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth. [Ref: C.E.W. Bean, Anzac to Amiens, Australian War Memorial, Canberra, 1983, p 264]
It’s estimated more than that 8 Million animals were sacrificed during the Great war, millions more in WWII. Animals continue to serve today, in fact, Australia has more dogs in service than at any time in history.
What began as a modest project by a small charity in Australia manned by volunteers to recognise our war animals has gained momentum and attracted the interest of other countries including New Zealand, UK, France and Canada.
The site is becoming an increasingly popular stopping point for war history tourists. The monument is helping to educate future generations and becoming an important place of reflection and remembrance for all animals of wars past and present.
Now you can be part of this important historical project and help educate future generations of the role and sacrifice of our war animals.
Imagine being able to show your Kids or Grandkids and having future generations see your families name here, your support will be immortalised for generations to come.
you can sponsor a paver here:
It's heartening to know that maintenance of the site is carried out year-round by local volunteers some families have been in the area for generations. They do this to ensure the memory of our war animals are never forgotten, and I believe we should not forget our four-legged diggers either.
Proceeds from sponsor pavers go towards expanding the site to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors.
Lest we forget our four legged diggers served too.
“It is my wish that next Memorial Day when we think of all our soldiers who gave their lives in war, please pause a thought for the four legged and winged hero's that fought and died alongside our troops. Hopefully one day we can not only stop sending our sons and daughters to war but our pets too”. Nigel Allsopp, president AWAMO
In the event, you can’t sponsor a paver perhaps you can wear a purple poppy along-side the tradition red poppy this remembrance day in remembrance of all those who serve.
You can get your purple poppy or newley released Red + Purple Poppy in time for remembrance day here.
