Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki - Macedonia Greece
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is housed in a 1962 edifice, designed by architect Patroclos Karantinos. It is a listed building as a unique example of modernist art in Greece. The Museum's collections include distinctive works of art and excavation finds from across Macedonia, as the archaeological service was the first state service to operate in Thessaloniki immediately after the liberation of the city. Since 2002 it operates as an independent special peripheral service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
In 2003 the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki was completely renovated in order to meet new technical and museological advances. The new exhibition of antiquities was organised into six permanent thematic units that encompass all aspects of personal and public life in antiquity. One grand and 2--5 minor temporary exhibitions take place annually, covering special and unique features of the Macedonians' everyday life in relation to the wider cultural framework of the rest of the Greek world and the broader zone of southeastern Mediterranean basin.

The Athens War Museum (Greek: Πολεμικό Μουσείο), established on July 18, 1975, is the museum of the Greek Armed Forces. Its purpose is the exhibition of weapon artifacts and the relevant research in the history of war. It covers the history of war in all ages. The museums' collections include the collection of the Greek Army, with artifacts from other civilizations such as Ancient China and Ancient Japan. In 1964, the Hellenic State decided to found the War Museum, wishing to honor all those who fought for Greece and its freedom. The design of the museum was undertaken by a team of distinguished scientists, headed by Professor Thoukidides Valentis of the National Technical university of Athens (N.T.U.A). On July 18, 1975, the President of the Hellenic Republic H.E. Constantine Tsatsos and the Minister of National Defense Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas inaugurated the Museum. Its various activities include the publication of books, the establishment and maintenance of monuments and memorials and the aid to services and agencies all over Greece. The Museum’s exhibition areas are distributed over four levels (floors) and present images of Greek history from antiquity to the present. The museum's centerpieces are weaponry from wars in which Greece was involved.
The War Museum has established Museum Branches at the cities of Nauplion (Peloponnese) (1988), Chania (Crete) (1995), Tripoli (Peloponnese) (1997) and Thessaloniki (2000). After building the Hellenic Air Force Museum, some airplanes were brought to this museum.

Return to Salonika
Once a great center of Sephardic life, Salonika's Jewish community was almost entirely wiped out during the Holocaust. We visit the city, now called Thessaloniki in Greece, together with a group of young Jewish activists gathered by JDC, to pay tribute and, for a weekend, restore the city as a focus of Jewish culture in the Balkans.
TREZOROS - War Breaks Out (Clip)
TREZOROS The Lost Jews of Kastoria
One Story Speaks for Many
This deeply moving documentary illuminates the lives of a Sephardic community in Greece whose story speaks for all people who have been displaced and wronged by war and discrimination.
The story is set in the beautiful and idyllic city of Kastoria where Jews and Christians lived in harmony for over two millennia. In October 1940 this would all change after the invasion of Greece by Axis forces. Initially occupied by Italy, the Jewish community remained safe- but after Mussolini fell from power the Nazis took control of the town, dooming the community that had existed since the times of the Roman Empire.
The film uses never-before-seen archival footage, vibrantly bringing to life just one of the many Jewish communities that had existed in Greece before the end of World War II. “Trezoros” (Ladino/Judeo Spanish term of endearment meaning “Treasures”) is a highly emotional story told by it’s survivors, with interviews filmed on location in Kastoria, Thessaloniki, Athens, Tsur Moshe, Tel Aviv, Miami, Los Angeles and New York.
