Greenville is a city in Hunt County, Texas, United States, approximately 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Dallas. It is the county seat and largest city of Hunt County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 25,557, and in 2016 the estimated population was 27,172.
Greenville was named for Thomas J. Green,[9] a significant contributor to the founding of the Texas Republic.[10]
Geography
Greenville is located in North Texas at 33°7′34″N 96°6′35″W (33.126004, −96.109703),[11] in central Hunt County. Greenville is situated in the heart of the Texas blackland prairies, 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Dallas and about 45 miles (72 km) south of the Texas/Oklahoma border, on the eastern edge of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Greenville has a total area of 33.4 square miles (86.6 km2), of which 32.6 square miles (84.5 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 2.46%, are water.[4] The Cowleech Fork of the Sabine River flows through the northeast part of the city.
Climate
Greenville is considered to be a part of the humid subtropical region. Due to its location on the north Texas prairies the climate is typically humid with mild precipitation.
History
City in 1886
Cotton scene, public square, Greenville, Texas (postcard, circa 1908)
Greenville was founded in 1846. The city was named after Thomas J. Green, a significant contributor to the establishment of the Texas Republic. He later became a member of the Congress of the Texas Republic. The city was almost named Pinckneyville in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas.[citation needed]
As the Civil War loomed, Greenville was divided over the issue of secession, as were several area towns and counties. Greenville attorney and State Senator Martin D. Hart was a prominent Unionist. He formed a company of men who fought for the Union in Arkansas, even as other Greenville residents fought for the Confederacy. The divided nature of Greenville and Hunt County is noted by a historical marker in The SPOT Park at 2800 Lee Street in downtown Greenville. In the post-Civil War era, Greenville's economy became partly dependent on cotton as the local economy entered a period of transition.[12]
With a population of 12,384 in the 1920 census, the city was the 20th largest in Texas at the time.
In World War II, the Mexican Escuadrón 201 was stationed in Greenville while training at nearby Majors Field.
Greenville was notorious for a large sign, installed on July 7, 1921, over Lee Street, the main street in the downtown district, between the train station and the bus station in the 1920s to 1960s. The sign read: Welcome to Greenville, The Blackest Land, The Whitest People.[13][14] According to history teacher Paul E. Sturdevant of Greenville, the original intent behind the whitest people was to define the citizens of Greenville as friendly, trustworthy and helpful was sincere, and it was meant to include all citizens, regardless of race.[14] In pre-civil rights America, the phrase That's mighty white of you meant that you were honest, not like suspect blacks. The sign thus acquired racial overtones, and the original sign was taken down and placed into storage on April 13, 1965, possibly at the urging of Texas Governor John Connally, who had made a visit to the town weeks before.[14] In 1968, Greenville's Sybil Maddux had the sign reinstalled, with the wording modified to read The Greatest People; the original sign is in the collection of the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum.[14]

Call to Courage Campaign in Greenville, SC
BOB ABERNETHY, anchor: As the presidential candidates step up their campaigns in the sates with the first primaries and caucuses, a group called Faith in America is trying to make gay rights an election issue. Those speaking out for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, known as the LGBT, are led by a former United Methodist minister, Jimmy Creech, who was defrocked for marrying a gay couple. Creech speaks of trying to end what he calls religion-based bigotry. This past week, the Faith in America group ended its campaign in South Carolina with a town hall debate in Greenville between Christian evangelicals and the campaign's organizers.
Reverend JIMMY CREECH (Executive Director, Faith in America): We believe that when people understand the larger context in which religion has been misused to justify discrimination that they will better understand how it's being misused today against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Reverend Jimmy Creech

ABERNETHY: In response, a group of evangelical ministers has taken issue with Faith in America's charge that the Bible has been misinterpreted.

Diner says there's a rat in KFC's chicken
Jeanne Moos reports on a fast food flap that has one diner fried. See below for KFC's full response provided to CNN on June 22:
“Recently, a customer questioned the quality of a KFC product, and this received considerable publicity given the sensational nature of his claim. The product has now been tested by a third-party independent lab, which confirmed it is definitely a piece of chicken, as we knew all along. The right thing for this customer to do is to apologize and cease making false claims about the KFC brand.”
The Nightmare World of Gang Stalking
More than 10,000 people worldwide claim they're the victims of a vast organized surveillance effort designed to ruin their lives, a phenomenon known as gang stalking. Mental health experts see gang stalking as a symptom of paranoia, but the self-identified victims who insist what they're experiencing is real have come together online and in support groups to share their stories.
VICE met up with a handful of Americans who claim their lives have been derailed by gang stalking to understand what serious consequences the phenomenon presents. Then we hear from Dr. Josh Bazell, one of many physicians who believes the victims of gang stalking are experiencing dangerous delusions that could be treated by mental health professionals.

AAS Eclipse Workshop 2017
On 21 August 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will cross the United States from coast to coast, giving tens of millions of people in a 70-mile-wide path from Oregon to South Carolina a chance to see the solar corona and experience all phases of the eclipse. The Moon's shadow will sweep across the country starting mid morning in Oregon with just under two minutes of totality and reaching maximum duration of approximately 2 minutes 40 seconds in Southern Illinois before exiting over South Carolina mid afternoon.
Outside the path of totality, all of North America will experience a partial eclipse. This event, the first total solar eclipse to touch the US mainland since 1979 and the first to span the continent since 1918, presents a unique opportunity to excite people about science and connect them personally to the cosmos, as well as to conduct several important scientific observations. We are a working group dedicated to the science and public outreach of this unique event.
The Eclipse 2017 Workshop IV took place in Carbondale, Illinois, on Friday and Saturday, 10 and 11 June 2016, at the SIU Carbondale Student Center, hosted by Bob Baer and Shadia Habbal.

Pros & Cons Of Costco Hearing Aids
Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and Founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Arizona, discusses the Pros and Cons of purchasing hearing aids from a Costco.
Website:
Clinic Website:
Costco is one of the largest purchasers in the hearing aid industry. This gives them incredible buying power and this drives down the cost of devices for their members. They are also the 2nd largest money makers for the Big Box store behind only Wine.
Lets take a look at the Pros and Cons of buying your next set of hearing aids from a Big Box retailer.
Let's start with the Pros:
Pro #1. Their hearing aids are CHEAP. Not cheap as in bad, cheap as in low cost. A pair of Premium Kirkland Signature 8.0 devices are only $1,600.
Pro #2. The hearing aids are Good. The top tiers of devices are comparable to top tier name brand devices. In fact, all of the hearing aids are either name brand, or re-branded from a name brand manufacturer.
Pro #3. Some Costcos have experienced Audiologists and Hearing Instrument specialists. The hearing care professional you work with is even more important than the devices you buy. You just have to find a Costco that has a phenomenal hearing care provider.
Now on to the Cons:
Con #1. Only 20-25% of patients return to Costco for a second set of hearing aids. Obviously, this is on average. I suspect that Costcos with terrific hearing care providers have a much higher rate. The only possible excuses for these low numbers are either they are not performing best practices like Real Ear Measures, or they are not providing a good patient experience (ie. Customer Service)
Con #2. Some hearing aids they sell are LOCKED! Watch out for locked hearing aids. They lock them to prevent you from getting them serviced from other hearing care providers. You must go to a Costco no matter what.
Con #3. The hearing aids are De-Featured. Despite the hearing aids still being good, manufacturers do remove features from the devices they sell to Costco. If you aren't hearing well with Costco hearing aids, it may not be you, it may be the devices.
Con #4. Long Wait times. I have had patients mention that wait times to get hearing aids from Costco have been up to 30 days to even be seen by the provider. There are also concerns that if you do purchase hearing aids from Costco that you will have to wait too long for service if the hearing aids need to be repaired or re-programmed.
Overall, Costco is known for providing good hearing aids at very low prices. Some people receive excellent benefits from Costco hearing aids as long as the hearing care provider they see is top notch. As long as you are aware of the Pros and Cons of going to Costco for your hearing healthcare, then you should be able to make an educated decision on what is right for you.
