WASABI FIELDS AT IKADABA - 筏場, Izu Peninsula, Japan
Nestled in the valley of the mountains that obtain its fresh waters from Mt Amani, the fields contain and almost perpetual view of nothing but Wasabi which for a fact, feed 80% of Japan's top largest restaurants.
We planned to visit Ikadaba but we were ill prepared for the challenges it demanded for us to arrive. We left our comforts of our AirBnb in Shizuoka, in the midst of one of the strongest Typhoons in Japan, drive through treacherous roads and against the elements and at times, I was fearful for my safety but the rewards of doing arriving exceeded beyond expectations.
We were greeted at the door by a lovely young grandmother of only 85 years old who had expected our arrival earlier as I had called in advance to let them know of our arrival.
She had humbly advised us that she was the 8th generation owner of this establishment and shown us pictures of her in her prime years to which, her next of kin, the manager of the Tsukemono business came upstairs and greeted us as well.
We showed him pictures of what we saw on newspapers and instagram of what we hoped to achieve in picture quality but initially, he said it was almost impossible as those pictures are only given to people with special access. After I explained to him that my friends came from Australia and kindly advised him of the weather conditions, he deeply considered our circumstances and alas, we were humbled by his decision to personally show us around the fields and his story behind this.
Thank you so much for this experience.
All of our friends deeply learnt a lot from this tour and though we tried to offer our thanks through monetarial means, we will do this next time by a night out in a Japanese local bar.

Japan Wasabi Paradise - softypapa
A small and picturesque wasabi radish farm in the high mountains of central Japan.
Wasabi horseradish is used in Japan with sushi and sashimi as well as with other meals such as cold soba noodles. Wasabi is derived from the root of the wasabi plant which requires very clean, fresh water to grow well. The mountains of the Japan Southern Alps receive abundant rainfall and this area is perfectly suited for growing wasabi. Farmers in these high mountains have for centuries grown wasabi in terraced fields similar to rice paddies, however wasabi fields are normally situated much higher in the mountains than rice fields. While hiking in the mountains here it is not uncommon to find small wasabi farms situated along the narrow course of fast running streams or at the base of cascading waterfalls.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

This is a very late vlog showing the weekend of the first big typhoon over a month ago, on the 7th September. Since then there has been another HUGE one , so Japan is currently reeling under the pressure of repairs from two big direct hits, and as I am typing this there are another two typhoons heading towards us.

Japan looks for missing as typhoon kills as many as 48
(14 Oct 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4234646
Water still covered a road and the surrounding field in Kawagoe, Saitama, north of Tokyo on Monday, two days after a typhoon swept Japan.
Typhoon Hagibis, which hit Saturday through to Sunday morning, left as many as 36 dead and caused serious damage in central and northern Japan.
One resident was worried about her commute now that the road she uses is under water.
About 100 feet from the flooded area, a husband and wife were busy cleaning their mud-covered garage with the help of a volunteer.
Kyodo News service, assembling information from a wide network, counted 36 deaths caused by the typhoon with 16 people missing. The official count from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency was 19 dead and 13 missing.
Hagibis dropped record amounts of rain in some spots, according to meteorological officials, causing over 20 rivers to overflow.
