Travels with Al & Linda: Jackson Square & Artillery Park
Andrew “Jackson Square” is a historic park in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960, for its central role in the city's history, and as the site where in 1803 Louisiana was made a United States territory pursuant to the Louisiana Purchase. In the background one can see the historic Saint Louis Cathedral.
“Washington Artillery Park” has a mounted Civil War cannon that pays tribute to the 141st Field Artillery of the Louisiana National Guard. The park overlooks the Mississippi River and has granite stair leading to the water’s edge.
Additional note: The cannon (model 1861 Parrott Rifle) honors the men of the Battalion Washington Artillery, a Louisiana National Guard unit formed in New Olreans in 1838 as the Washington Artillery Company.

141st Field Artillery holds 174th annual ceremony.
NEW ORLEANS -- The Louisiana National Guard's 1st Battalion, 141st Field Artillery Regiment, also known as the Washington Artillery, held its annual wreath-laying ceremony at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, Nov. 3, 2012 and its 174th annual Pass-In-Review at Jackson Barracks, Nov. 4, 2012.
These two longstanding events memoralize the decorated history of the 1-141.
Saturday's wreath-laying ceremony, started in 1965 by the Washington Artillery Veterans Association, honors the unit's heritage and its fallen Soldiers.
Standing in front of the Washington Artillery Monument at Lake Lawn, Ronald R. Besson, president of WAVA, spoke to the current Soldiers of the 1-141 and gave them a brief history of what the monument represented.
The base of the monument lists all of the engagements of the Washington Artillery, including [Operation] Iraqi Freedom, said Besson. It also includes the names of all members who have lost their lives in active service.
The following day, Sunday, Guardsmen of the 1-141 participated in the Pass-In-Review ceremony. The pass-in-review dates from the earliest time in military history and demonstrates the glory and strength of the assembled troops who march in formation before their military leaders.
The LANG's 156th Army Band began the ceremony by playing the traditional military march, Semper Fidelis, as each battery, led by its commander, marched onto the field in unison.
Once the Soldiers were in their places and at attention, Maj. Gen. Glenn H. Curtis, adjutant general of the LANG, Col. Jacques Thibodeaux, commander of the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and Lt. Col. Steven M. Finney, commander of the 1-141, surveyed the formation they would later inspect, unit by unit.
During the ceremony, A Battery was awarded the Continuous Fire streamer for being the best firing battery of the year, while B Battery received the Try Us streamer for superior overall unit performance. As the ceremony drew to a close, the 156th struck up the tune Invictus and the battalion marched past the official party for a final evaluation.

[Wikipedia] Driskill Mountain
Driskill Mountain (also referred to as Mount Driskill) is the highest natural summit in Louisiana, with an elevation of 535 feet (163 m) above sea level. It lies about 5.3 miles (8.5 km) southeast of Bryceland, Louisiana. It is located in the northeastern corner of Sec. 32, T. 17 N., R. 5 W. within Bienville Parish.
Driskill Mountain is a landform created by the erosion of unlithified Paleogene sediment. Its summit consists of nonmarine quartz sands of the Cockfield Formation. These sands overlie shallow marine and coastal clays, silts, and sands of the Cook Mountain Formation, which form the bulk of Driskill Mountain.
James Christopher Driskill, the person for whom Driskill Mountain was named, was born in Henry County, Georgia, on June 27, 1817. In 1840, he married the former Eugenia Irwin Walker. In October 1859, Driskill sold his land in Troup County, Georgia, and moved his family, which by then consisted of his wife, eight boys, and one girl, to Louisiana. By December 1859, Driskill had purchased in Louisiana 324 acres (1.31 km2), which included Driskill Mountain. During the American Civil War, Driskill served in the Home Guard. His eldest son, William B. Driskill, was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on May 5, 1864. Another one of his sons, James B. Driskill, disappeared after he had left Louisiana to fight in the Civil War. Except for one son and daughter, Driskill's family remained in Bienville Parish, and his descendents still live in the area.
One may walk the trail to the top and sign the logbook located in an army box. A large pile of rocks marks the high point.

Confederate Artillery Demonstration
Taken at Warsaw, MO Heritage Days Festival October 16th 2010. This 3 man crew gives a step by step demo on the loading and firing of this 1842(reproduction) Napoleon 6 lb. cannon. I was almost in front of the cannon, and I do not recommend doing this without ear protection.

beautiful lake pontchartrain which isn't exactly a lake anyways,,
the water way is actually a brackish estuary of the mississippi river.
it covers an area of 630 square miles with an average depth of 12 to 14 feet with many areas only 3-5 feet near the shores.
some of the shipping channels are kept dredged out to 50-70 feet near the industrial canal.
the lake is approximately 40 miles wide from east to west
and about 24 miles tall from north to south..
the lake is home to the longest bridge over water in the world,
the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway..
there is no toll going north to mandeville,
but there is a $5.00 toll on cars traveling southbound to the south shore terminus in Metairie, LA (about 3 miles west of new orleans)
Louisiana After Ferguson | January 2015 | Public Square
In September, the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old New Iberia black man that local officials say shot himself in the chest while handcuffed in the back seat of a Sheriff's vehicle. In New Orleans, the Crescent City's Police Department is currently under a Department of Justice Consent Decree for civil rights violations. These events and recent others in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York have raised questions about the tactics that law enforcement officers use in their interactions with the public, particularly African-Americans. So, who polices the police in Louisiana? Is the mistrust of law enforcement by the black community justified? When, if ever, is racial profiling okay? Have police departments become too militarized? Can community policing change perceptions among the police and the public they serve? Louisiana Public Square looks for answers on Louisiana After Ferguson airing statewide Wednesday, January 28 at 7 pm on LPB HD and in New Orleans on WLAE. (Record date: Tuesday, January 27) Our panelists are: ? Raymond Diamond, Jules F. and Frances L. Landry Distinguished Professor Law, LSU ? Sherman Jackson, Chief of the Gonzales Police Department ? Dr. Ernest Johnson, Sr., president of the Louisiana NAACP ? Hillar Moore, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney - LPB CEO, Beth Courtney and LPB news anchor, Shauna Sanford moderate the discussion. The program also includes interviews with Fabian Blache, Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police; Maxine Crump; director of Dialogue on Race, Louisiana; Marjorie Esman, Executive Director of the Louisiana ACLU; Carl Redman, former Executive Editor of The Advocate; and Byron Washington, community activist.
