USA: LEXINGTON: 1ST WOMAN ENTERS VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
English/Nat
A six-month ordeal began on Wednesday for the first women to enter the Virginia Military Institute in the United States.
They -- and their fellow freshmen -- underwent the ritual known as the rat line - a gruelling initiation is designed to push the cadets, known as 'rats' to their limit.
The presence of women at the formerly all-male institute is controversial - 30 dead rats and a sign reading Save the Males were found on the parade ground prior to the initiation.
The nearly 460 freshmen lined up early Tuesday afternoon to begin the rat line, a six-month ordeal that is intended to test their physical, mental and emotional endurance.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Rats, look at the men which stand before you. They are your cadre. They represent the essence of V-M-I. They are the athletes who have sacrificed on the field, the scholars who have excelled in the classroom, and the citizen-soldiers who possess the utmost in military proficiency.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
The cadets, including the 30 women who enrolled Monday, faced screaming upperclassmen drillmasters.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
From these men, you will learn everything of which you need to survive here. You will not fail them and you have no choice because they will teach and you will learn.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
V-M-I officials for 14 months have prepared to comply with a U-S Supreme Court ruling that the state-supported school must admit women.
Cadets have been trained how to avoid sexually harassing female rats without compromising the institute's harsh regime.
Upperclassmen say the presence of women does not alter the rigours of the rat line.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It wasn't different at all. You say we getting that same knot and the reason why we get that is because we've all gone through it. It was pretty intense today and it's the same as what I had it. Yes ma'am.
SUPER CAPTION: Kevin Trujillo, Senior Class President
They say the cadets are not affected by the morning's discovery of 30 dead laboratory rats on the parade grounds.
The rats may have been left as a prank by students at rival Washington and Lee University, whose campus is adjacent to V-M-I.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The people outside this barracks can do whatever they want, the media can say whatever they want, the press can say whatever they want, the people who oppose integration can say whatever they want. What happens inside the four walls of these barracks is what we have control over and they can't put a finger on it.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
V-M-I is trying to avoid the embarrassment The Citadel suffered in 1995 when Shannon Faulkner became the first woman to enter there.
The South Carolina school was the only other state military school to exclude women.
Faulkner dropped out after one week, citing stress and her isolation as the only woman in a hostile male corps.
Four more women joined The Citadel last August, but two dropped out in January alleging harassment by male upperclassmen.
