វត្តរាជបូណ៌ (វត្តបូ) Wat Bo Siem Reap
Wat Bo is one of the oldest pagodas in Siem Reap, Cambodia and has a number of well-preserved wall paintings from the 19th century. Although it is a Buddhist temple some of the wall paintings describe the famous ancient love story of Rama and Shita, the strongest man and the most beautiful women of all times. Still today the royal families of the Southeast Asian countries claim to be descendants of Rama. Anyhow, these wall paintings describe a Hindu story that is most remarkable in a Buddhist temple. Wat Bo temple also contains a large collection of Buddha statues that you will find behind the main Buddha.
Wat Bo is located on the east side of Siem Reap River and gives Wat Bo Area its name. Cross the Siem Reap River on the ‘Wat Bo Bridge’ next to La Residence d’Angkor and just follow Samdech Tep Vong Street. You need to cross the River Road Achar Sva Street as well as Wat Bo Road and then continue straight until you reach Wat Bo Pagoda.
Pagodas and monks welcome visitors and tourists. Please always remember to not disturb prayer or eating times, women are not allowed to touch monks, bow slightly in the presence of older monks, don’t point soles of feet or fingers towards monks or Buddha statues, sit with feet tucked behind rather than crossed, hats off in the monastery grounds, take off your shoes in the building, speak softly, ask before taking pictures, don’t enter closed buildings without permission, contribute what you can to the donation box.

Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.
The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.
The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.
Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.
It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.
The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.
Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

CAMBODIA - Siem Reap Province, Angkor Wat temple
The Siem Reap Province lies in northwestern Cambodia and its capital, Siem Reap, is the gateway to Angkor region. The Angkor Wat temple complex is the largest religious monument in the world. The complex was built in the 12th century as the capital of the Khmer Empire.
Wat Bo Pagoda - Things to do in Siem Reap
Wat Bo Pagoda is an 18th century building which is one of the oldest Buddhist pagodas in town. It's only about 1km away from Pub Street, but it's rarely visited by tourists.
If you have the time to visit, you should try to get to Wat Bo Pagoda as it's a beautiful and quiet place. There are no entrance fees, but it's always advised to make a small donation when looking around.
You should also follow a few rules:
1. Wear appropriate clothing which covers your shoulders and knees.
2. Be respectful to your surroundings. Don't be loud or annoying. Pagodas are often quiet places (although during festivals they are the opposite) and people live here.
3. Take your shoes off when you go inside the pagoda.
4. Don't point - whether it's with your shoes or toes. It's rude to point!
5. Don't touch monks, especially if you are a women. The best way to greet a monk is to sampeah - this means to place the palms of your hands together and bow slightly.
The wall paintings at Wat Bo are particularly detailed and show stories of Hindu and Buddhist epics as well as daily life in Cambodia.
The monks inside are generally quite welcoming and will often look forward to the opportunity to practice their English. But remember the rules above and don't be too forward.
The grounds are very beautiful and you'll only need around 30-45 minutes to see everything. A visit to Wat Bo temple can be a nice excursion for around an hour including travelling time.
You might want to combine a visit to Wat Bo with trips to other pagodas in the area such as Wat Damnak or Wat Preah Prom Rath. It's a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon.
If you have any questions about Wat Bo Pagoda, please leave a comment and we'll be happy to answer them for you.

Children at Wat Bo Buddhist Temple being taught instruments, Siem Reap, Cambodia, 02-April-2010
I know it sounds like they are just banging on them, but these children are being taught the temple instruments at Wat Bo, one of the oldest Buddhist Temples, Monk training centers and villages in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Sounds similar to Indonesial/Balinese Gamelan. Part of my Round The World trip in early 2010. 2nd-April-2010.

ប្រាសាទក្រវ៉ាន់ - Kravan Temple, Siem Reap Cambodia
Prasat Kravan ប្រាសាទក្រវាន់ is located in the east of Angkor Wat (southern route of the small circuit). Bas-reliefs of Vishnu and Lakshmi are rendered into the brick, the only example of brick bas-reliefs in the Angkor area. The reliefs in this tower can be best viewed in the morning when the east light enters the door, in the afternoon they are barely visible. Prasat Kravan was built by high court officials in the first half of the tenth century (921) and completed during the reign of Harshavarman I.
The Prasat Kravan is the modern name in Khmer and stands for artabotrys odoratissimus temple.
Prasat = temple
Kravan = artabotrys odoratissimus – this is the Latin term for a special type of creeper with fragrant blossoms.
The Hindu temple was restored by the French, giving it a new foundation, interior walls and drains.
Some of the broken bricks were replaced with carefully made replica. All of these are marked with the letters CA, representing the Angkor Conservancy.
Bas-reliefs at Prasat Kravan represent Vishnu
The bas-reliefs on the interior walls of the central tower represent Vishnu in different positions and forms.
o Four-armed Vishnu – sits astride on his vehicle Garuda (large bird-like creature) and holds his standard equipment: Globe, discus, conch and baton.
o Four-armed Vishnu – also with four arms and the standard equipment, there is another version which illustrates the story of Vishnu in his personification of Vamana. The dwarf took three great steps in order to span the whole universe and to cover the gods who are in control of the world.
o Eight-armed Vishnu – stands strictly in a position of a statue, framed by six registers of people and surmounted by a giant lizard. It’s likely that the sculpture used to be very colorful.
Siem reap (5): Wat Bo
Oh, I really loves this temple... It's so artistic architecture
