What to see in North Thailand: Magnificent Burmese Temples.mov
Mae Hong Son temples, stupas, wats and pagodas were all influenced by the Shan people who originally lived in Burma/Myanamar and were lavishly decorated. Just a reminder: the Myanmar/Burma border is very close to Mae Hong Son. The most amazing temples can be seen in one compound, Wat Hua Wiang or Wat Klang Mueang. They may have been even more gorgeous at night than during the day when beautifully lit, people made lantern offerings that floated into the sky and set little boats with candles into a small pond.
An important took place the next morning inside the same compound when Shan women brought offerings to celebrate the birthday of the temple founder; not a monk or lama but a Shan person who is still alive. A Shan band played atonal music on traditional instruments inside, women went back and forth with food offerings, and there is even a small museum inside the temple with antique objects.
Again, I loved Mae Hong Son...

Pong Duet Hot Spring Geyser, North West Thailand
While driving from Chang Mai to Mae Hong Son in the North East part of Thailand. We drove off the main highway to take a break and found this great spot to relax. We found the Pong Duet Hot Spring Geyser. We had the area all to ourselves. I don't supposed the sign that says WARNING, TIGER SIGHTING IN AREA was discouraging people from enjoying this wonderful site? We went on and was rewarded with this great place to spend some time alone at the spring.
