My next stop on my trip to Phetchaburi was the lovely old temple of Wat Yai Suwannaram. The Ubosot, Ordination Hall, has particularly lovely murals, although in less fine condition to Wat Ko. These date to the 17th century Ayutthaya period, although renovated during the reign of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V) at the end of the 19th century.The murals depict devotees offering prayers and merit to the Lord Buddha.
Here, the Ubosot is enclosed by a cloister with a great number of Buddha figures. Adjacent to the cloister is a large pond with a small wooden building built over the water. This was the temple Tripitaka, the library for storing the books and manuscripts of the monks.
To the west of the Ordination Hall is a large teak wood Sala, (Meeting Hall). The building once stood in the royal palace at Ayutthaya, but was moved here before the Burmese sacked the city in the late eighteenth century.

Tham Khao Luang Cave Wat Yai Suwannaram 2014 Phetchaburi
The Tham Khao Luang Cave is located approximately 5km from Khao Wang. The cave is regarded as the largest and most important in the province. This is due to the fact that it houses a Buddha image cast under the royal command of King Rama V as a dedication to King Rama III and King Rama IV. At the foot of Khao Luang Hill, a large monastery locally known as Wat Tham Klaep or Wat Bun-thawi is located. Attractions within the compound are a large multi-purpose hall and a chapel laden with beautifully carved door panels.
Wat Yai Suwannaram was originally built during the 17th century and renovated during the reign of Rama V (r 1868–1910). Legend has it that the gash in the ornately carved wooden doors of the lengthy wooden săh·lah dates to the Burmese attack on Ayuthaya. The faded murals inside the bòht date back to the 1730s. Next to the bòht, set on a murky pond, is a beautifully designed old hŏr đrai (Tripitaka library), though these days it’s home only to pigeons.
