Puppetry performance at Ban Kang School, Salavan Province
Unexploded ordnance (UXO) still threatens the lives of people living in most of Lao PDR. During the Vietnam War, over 2 million tons of bombs, including over 400,000 cluster bombs rained over the countryside. Between 10 - 30% of the ordnance did not explode at the time they were dropped. World Educaiton has been working with the Ministry of Education in 9 provinces to provide education on the danger of UXO to school children. Puppetry is an important method of informing other members of the community, including parents and out-of-school children. The World Education puppetry program provides children an opportunity to help their schools and communities.

Queen Mathilde's visit raises Saravan's issues into spotlight.
Belgian Queen Mathilde's visit has raised pre-education, mother and child health and nutrition issues in southern Saravan province into the spotlight, recalling the need for greater effort to improve the issues.
Queen Mathilde, who is also the Honourary President of Unicef Belgium, and Her Royal Highness's delegates are visiting Laos from February 20-23, which is in line with the Laos - Unicef cooperation framework.
During Her Royal Highness's visit to Unicef-supported programmes in Saravan on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Queen learnt about the need to improve pre-education, mother and child health and nutrition in impoverished districts of the province.
At the visit to Laongam and Ta-Oy districts yesterday, the Queen learnt that the two districts are suffering from insufficient classrooms to run pre-education and kindergarten classes. Therefore, children have not been well prepared for primary school resulting in the fact that the rate of students repeating the same class or dropping out of school is high.
In light of the issue, Unicef has extended support to provide pre-education classrooms for ethnic children aged between 3-5 years.
In 2014, Unicef initiated its support to pre-education class programmes in Ta-Oy district including in Kang village. Initially, the pre-education rate for children aged between 3-5 years was only 13.5 percent but it has now increased to 74 percent.
Yesterday, the Queen visited pre-education programmes in Kang and Doub villages of Ta-Oy district, which have been supported by Unicef to experience the situation first hand. During the visit, Queen Mathilde was interested in learning the situation about pre-education, mother and child health and nutrition in the province.
Unicef has been active in helping Laos to address and improve many fundamental issues. From 2012 - 2016, Unicef has carried out work programmes in Laos amounting to more than US$49 million. From 2017-2021, Unicef plans to carry out programmes totalling US$70.5 million, which will finance programmes in seven main areas of social protection, climate change and disaster response, education, health, hygienic water, nutrition, educational institute, policy and justice improvement.
Yesterday, Lao officials and local residents of Saravan province organised a baci or Su Kwan - a ritual ceremony in which the hosts tied strings to the wrists of visitors and extended best wishes to the Queen.
Today, the Queen is scheduled to visit Wat Phou (meaning Mountain Temple), one of the oldest temples in Laos which has been listed by Unesco as a world heritage site in southern Champassak province.
On Monday, the Queen called on Vice President, Phankham Viphavanh at the Presidential office. Her Royal Highness also met with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Khamphao Eunthavanh and President of the Lao Women's Union, Dr Inlavanh Keobounphanh. It is the first visit to L aos by a member of the Belgian royal family.
