Khon Kaen Temples
Khon Kaen is a new town in an ancient land. Unlike many other Thai towns, Isaan’s capital was only found a little over 200 years ago. But hundreds of years before that, the ancient Khmer Empire expanded its presence here. They left behind many beautiful temples behind that are now tourist attractions today. Some are beautiful and some are a little weird. Let me take you to a few of the most interesting.
Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is located in Wat Nong Waeng, a royal temple on Klang Mueang Road. Otherwise known as the 9-storey stupa, Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is home to Buddhist relics and other important scriptures. The doors and windows are beautifully carved, depicting the life and reincarnations of Lord Buddha and Brahmin deities. The murals within the stupa tell historical stories about Khon Kaen. The top floor is where there are Buddhist relics. It’s perfect for a panorama view of all of Khon Kaen.
I’m here now at Phrathat Kham Khaen, another famous temple in town. Phrathat Kham Khaen translates to “Great stupa of tamarind heartwood” in English. There are relics of Lord Buddha here, that’s why it’s an important place of worship for the locals. In fact, the town of Khon Kaen gets its name from the temple’s beautiful stupa.
Last but not least, there is Wat Thung Setthi. This temple went through a stunning restoration a few years ago. What makes this temple unique are the etchings into glass windows. Not only Hindu deities like Shiva and Indra here in the stain-glassed windows of the dome, but also fictional pop culture characters too. Take a look into the glass etchings, and you’ll see Lilo and Stitch, Mickey Mouse, Doraemon and even Darth Vader. It’s also known for its garden depicting Buddhist hell. According to legend, this is where Buddhists go when they have bad karma.
As you can see, a trip to Khon Kaen is a wonderful chance to see Thai temples. It’s very easy to get to Isaan’s capital from Bangkok. Thai Smile offers three flights a day to and from Khon Kaen from Bangkok’s Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
