Mae Nak Phra Khanong Shrine, Bangkok
The story of Mae Nak Phra Khanong is known to most Thais. She showed love, devotion and loyalty to her husband, even after her death, by taking care of him as a ghost. Her shrine, which is not very elaborate, but quite unusual and interesting, is located at Wat Mahabut, off soi 7, Onnuj Road.

Wat Mahabut is not known for its historical legacy or its ancient architecture. It is famous for a female ghost, the legendary Mae Nak.
Mae Nak is a native of Phra Khanong and wife of Mak.
Mak was deployed during the war when Mae Nak died with her unborn child during childbirth.
Several movies have been made of this legend since the 1950's.
The latest remake is as recent as 2005. In the movie versions, the ghost is sometimes known as Nang Nak (Mrs Nak).
There is also a TV drama series and even an opera on this legend.
Wat Mahabut is one of the must visit place when in Bangkok for people curious of local legends.

Mae Nak ( Thailand Horror Movie )
The story is about a beautiful young woman named Nak, who lived on the banks of the Phra Khanong Canal, and her undying love for her husband, Mak.
With Nak pregnant, Mak is conscripted and sent to war (in some versions of the story the war is against the Shan tribe, while others are not specific), where he is seriously wounded. While he is being nursed back to health in central Bangkok, Nak and their child both die during a difficult childbirth. When Mak returns home, however, he finds his loving wife and child waiting for him. Neighbors who try to warn him that he is living with a ghost are all killed.
One day, as Nak is preparing nam phrik, she drops a lime off the porch. In her haste to retrieve it, she stretches her arm to pick it up from the ground below. Mak sees it and at last realizes his wife is a ghost. Terrified, he tries to find a way to flee without alarming her.
That night, Mak says he has to go downstairs to urinate. He then runs away into the night.
Discovering her husband has fled, Nak pursues him. Mak sees her and conceals himself behind a Blumea balsamifera (Thai: หนาด; pronounced Nat) bush.[3] According to folklore, ghosts are afraid of the sticky Blumea leaves. Mak then runs to Wat Mahabut temple, which a ghost cannot enter, as it is holy ground.
In her grief, Nak terrorizes the people of Phra Khanong, furious at them for causing Mak to leave her. However, Nak's ghost is captured by a powerful exorcist. Confining her in an earthen jar, he throws it into the canal.
There are differing versions of the rest of the story. In one, an old couple new to Phra Khanong finds the jar while fishing; in another two fishermen dredge up the jar. Nak is freed when they opened it.
Nak is conquered again by the venerable monk Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi). The learned monk confines her spirit in the bone of her forehead and binds it in his waistband. Legend says the waistband is currently in the possession of the royal family. Admiral Aphakonkiattiwong, the Prince of Chumphon, also claimed to have had the relic.[4] In alternative version, the monk assured Nak that in a future life she would be reunited with her beloved husband, and thus she voluntarily departed for the afterlife.
A shrine dedicated to Mae Nak is at Wat Mahabut. In 1997, the shrine relocated to nearby Suan Luang District of modern Bangkok.

Thai Ghost - Mae Nak - Trailer
Mae Nak
There are many tales in Thailand about a Thai Ghost but none is as well known as the story about the Thai Ghost known as Mae Nak. Mae Nak was a much feared type of Thai Ghost called a Phi Tai Tong Glom. The tale of Mae Nak is both terrifying and touching. It is a love story that goes horribly wrong. No one enjoys a good ghost story more then Thai people do and the tale of Mae Nak has spawned several Movies, an animated feature film, a musical and even an opera.
Many years ago in an old district of Bangkok, Phra Khanong, there lived a young couple, Tid and Mae Nak. Mae Nak was expecting her first child when her husband Tid was drafted into the army to fight against the Burmese. While Tid was away, unfortunately both mother and child died during childbirth. Mae Nak's love for her husband was so great and her spirit so strong that she returned as a ghost and both she and her child assumed human form.
Tid, unaware of these events, returned home and life for the young couple resumed as normal until one of Tid's friends told him about his wife's death. Tid did not believe him until one day, whilst eating supper together, a spoon was dropped and instinctively Mae Nak stretched out her arm to an extraordinary length to recover it. Tid questioned his wife about everything and eventually Mae Nak broke down and admitted that she had died and was now a ghost. Tid fled the house and took refuge in a temple.
Mae Nak begged her husband to come out of the temple but still terrified he refused. She flew into a rage and began to terrorize the villagers for having told her husband the truth. She went on a killing spree and even disposed of a Mho Phi (Ghost Doctor) whom the villagers had employed to exorcise Mae Nak. Every night Mae Nak would stand outside the temple where her husband was hiding and scream and wail for his return.
Legend has it that a senior and well respected Monk was passing nearby and heard the story. He spoke with Mae Nak for some time and finally persuaded her to give up her husband and seek peace. Mae Nak bids farewell to her husband for the last time, lies down on the ground and becomes a decomposed corpse.
A true story or not I hear you ask. No one knows for certain but it is a love story of great passion and more than just a few people would not dispute her existence.
A slight twist to this macabre tale is that today in Bangkok you can visit a shrine dedicated to Mae Nak who, whilst unlucky in love, is thought to be kind and generous and many Thai people believe they will receive good fortune in the Lottery by praying to her. Young couples ask for her blessings but pregnant women, not surprisingly, usually stay away.

This temple by Khlong Prakhanong holds a shrine to Mae Nak, who died in childbirth over 150 years ago while her husband was at war. In a much-filmed legend, he returned home, unaware his wife and child were ghosts. Conscripts and mothers come here to donate offerings such as dresses, wigs, make-up and toys to appease the vengeful spirits. It opens for 24 hours every 14th-15th and at the end of every month for kor huai ('seeking lucky numbers') for the state lottery.
