Wat Luang Phor Toh Temple Sikhio (Also known as Wat Salapoon or Wat Non Kum) in Sikhio Pak Chong Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand. ★ ★ ★ วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุมหาวิหาร - Wat Phrasi Mahathat Mahawihan ★ ★ ★
Wat Phrasi Mahathat Mahawihan (วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุมหาวิหาร) or written: Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Wora Maha Wihan (วัดพระศรีมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร), Wat Phrasrimahataat, Wat Phra Sri Mahathat and Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathart, is a Royal Temple of First Class, with monks living in the Thammayut Nikaya in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (กรุงเทพมหานคร, กรุงเทพฯ, Bangkok) and is located on the busy Thanon Phahonyothin (Phahonyothin Street) in Bangkok's Bang Khen district.
- History:
The temple was founded 1941 by Field Marshal Plaek Songkhram, the then Prime Minister of Thailand, to commemorate the introduction of the democratic system in Thailand. His original name was therefore Wat Prachathipatai (วัดประชาธิปไตย – Temple of Democracy). It was built very close to the Monument to the defense of the Constitution (Lak Si Monument) and completed on June 28th, 1941.
On June 30th, 1942, the name was changed to Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Wora Maha Viharn, after relics of the Buddha, an offshoot of the Holy Mahabodhi tree in Bodhgaya and Earth from holy places from India, and were kept in the Phra Chedi Sri Mahathat.
- Attractions:
- Phra Chedi Sri Mahathat
The 38 meters high Chedi is walkable inside. In it there is another chedi in which the relics are located. A circular corridor with four entrances leads around the smaller chedi. In niches in the wall lie the probes of various holy places in India. In further niches are also the urns with the ashes of various spiritual and secular dignitaries, such as for example of Plaek Songkhram.
- Bodhi Tree
On a round island in a small lake in front of the Chedi stands the Bodhi tree, which was pulled from an offshoot of the Mahabodhi tree in Bodhgaya. In front of the tree there is a large Buddha statue in meditation posture.
Wat Phrasi Mahathat Mahawihan is also close to Sathani Rotfai Lak Si (สถานีรถไฟหลักสี่), Rongphayaban Senthran Yennoeran (โรงพยาบาลเซนทรัลเยนเนอรัล), Sathani Rotfai Thung Song Hong (สถานีรถไฟทุ่งสองห้อง), Kasetsart University (มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์), Rongphayaban Mongkut Watthana (โรงพยาบาลมงกุฎวัฒนะ), Tha Akatsayan Don Mueang (ท่าอากาศยานดอนเมือง) and Sathani Rotfai Bang Khen (สถานีรถไฟบางเขน).
