Wat Phnom - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
February 2019 - Walk through the temple Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh City

Wat Phnom Buddhist Temple in Phnom Penh
Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was built in 1373, and stands 27 metres above the ground. It is the tallest religious structure in the city.
The temple itself is notable more for its historic importance than physical structure, but the park is a pleasant green space and a popular gathering place for locals. A few monkeys keep quarters there as well and will help themselves to any drinks you leave unattended. Wat Phnom is the center of celebration during Khmer New Year.
Legend relates that Daun Penh, a wealthy widow, found a large koki tree in the river. Inside the tree she found four bronze statues of the Buddha. Lady Penh constructed a small shrine on an artificial hill to protect the sacred statues. Eventually this became a sacred site and sanctuary where people would make blessings and pray.
The sanctuary itself has frequently been rebuilt several times in the 19th century and in 1926. The interior has a central altar complex with a large bronze seated Buddha surrounded by other statues, flowers, candles and items of devotion and worship. The walls are covered with murals, especially of Jataka stories of the Buddha's earlier reincarnations before his enlightenment. There are also murals depicting stories from the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana. The newer murals in the bottom tiers are somewhat balanced, traditional and modern.
The southwest corner of the vihear and stupa, is a small shrine dedicated to Lady Penh. The front is often crowded with the faithful bringing their prayers and food offerings to the woman deemed responsible for the founding of the wat.

SANGKRAN WAT PHNOM 2019 in PHNOM PENH CITY
The first time ever that I stay in Phnom Penh city during Khmer New Year cuz I always travel to provinces to enjoy with my family, friends in various places around Cambodia. It's the first day of Khmer New Year which fell on April 14, 2019. It's Sunday and the first day of Khmer New Year, year of the pig. Lots of people coming in and out at Wat Phnom Historical site to enjoy the Khmer New Year event, dancing, watching Robam Trot (deer dancing), play games, eat foods, take photos, selfies, buy products and so much more. I just walked around enjoyed a good day with them too. I traveled to 8 provinces the days after with Khmer Tourists family.

Wat Phnom in the heartbeat of Phnom Penh city, Cambodia
Wat Phnom is silent resort in the heart beat of Phnom Penh city in Cambodia. It's a landmark in Phnom Penh city and a location that we count the kilometers from Phnom Penh city to all the provinces of Cambodia. For example it's 221.7 kilometers from Phnom Pen to Krong Preah Sihanouk via Natioanl road number 4. So we count it from Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh city to the capital city of Sihanoukville. There is a big clock on the park straight from the dragon bridge road of Norodom boulevard to Wat Phnom. There is a sacred Buddhist temple/pagoda prominently sat on the top of the Wat Phnom Hill where it attracted all the local and international tourist to visit around the the temple. Previous years, there was an elephant where tourists can ride around the Wat Phnom resort but since the elephant was old, there is no more transport for any tourists.
Your support is a huge encouragement for me as a Khmer to continue sharing the tourist attraction places in Cambodia to all Khmer and the World and bring more tourists to Cambodia.

Cambodia - How to travel around? Angkor Wat, Phnom penh to Koh Rong.
Cambodia
Cambodia is an amazing country. But of course we heard different stories: some travelers told us Cambodians are the friendliest people ever! We also heard they are impolite and annoying. So like always – the best way is to find it out yourself: We loved the country and the people, they were really kind.
General Information
To enter Cambodia you need to pay for the visa. This is not a big deal – visa on arrival costs about 30 USD (you have to pay in US-Dollars). When you arrive at the airport of Siem Reap you will even find an ATM next to the immigration desk (fee is 5 USD). And yes, US-Dollar is the main currency in Cambodia which is really strange, but you get used to it. They also use the currency called Riel, but most of the time they only use it as change. 1 USD corresponds to 4.000 Riel (So 1.000 Riel = 25 Cents).
What are the highlights of Cambodia?
In general Cambodia is an easy country to travel around and well connected. We haven’t seen much of the east of the country, so we cannot give you any advice about that. All places we visited we travelled by bus – we always went for the cheapest deals and it was always a save way to travel (regarding Southeast Asian standards, but we have experienced worse). Below you can find our route and highlights of Cambodia.
Siem Reap
If there is any must-see in Cambodia it’s Siem Reap and the temple of Ankor Wat. You need at least one or two days to visit this stunning temple complex. The city itself is quite touristy though, so to experience the real Cambodian lifestyle you either need to get out of the city or visit some other less frequented places of Cambodia. It is definitely worth it to hire some bikes or a scooter and get out of the city center for a while.
Battambang
That’s why we visited Battambang or Battambong – we wanted to see a ‘normal’ Cambodian city. Battambang is actually not that small, as it is the second biggest city of Cambodia. Of course there are also some tourist attractions you could visit (and especially Tuk Tuk drivers beg you to visit them):
-the bamboo train
-the killing cave
-the bad cave
-the circus
Koh Rong Samloem
Koh Rong is famous! People tell you the sand is white and the parties are wild. Jungle parties, drugs, loud music, so it is actually a little bit confusing, when you start your research about the Koh Rong islands. We read many reviews, talked to people and heard different stories. Some people say it is heaven on earth, on the other hand we heard the parties can be annoying and the beach is dirty. So at the end we didn’t go to Koh Rong, but to Koh Rong Samloem – the smaller island. Compared to the big one, it is relaxed, calm and clean – but no parties (for everyone who is into parties)! Here you can find your inner peace and even the sea is very calm.
Kampot
Kampot is another great city to experience the relaxed Cambodian lifestyle. You will meet many expats over here as well. One of the highlights is to visit the salt and pepper field. You can book a tuk tuk tour or just hire a bike and go there. On the way you will drive through smaller, poorer villages, but the people are so happy to see you.
Phnom Penh
The capital of Cambodia is huge – this is probably also the reason why many people told us they don’t like Phnom Penh. “It’s dirty and dangerous”. But that’s not true! If you visit the right spots and if you stay at right places, the city is actually quite nice. The Indepence Monument looks great as well as the Royal Palace. Every now and then, when you walk through Phnom Penh you see some nice squares, statues or buildings. It is also the place where you can learn about the sad history of Cambodia – the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge killed more than a third of the population of Cambodia – also many women and children. It is very hard to understand how this could happen. When you do a Tuk Tuk tour you can visit the Toul sleng Museum and killing fields. Start with the museum on day one. Don’t do both on one day as it is very hard to digest. Our Advice: Read the book ‘First they killed my father’ by Loung Ung.

WAT PHNOM Historical & Cultural Tourism Site, The Top Tourist Attraction in Phnom Penh City
One of the top tourist attraction in Phnom Penh city is Wat Phnom Historical & Cultural Tourism Site located on a small hill of 27meters, in the heart of the capital city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Southeast Asia. The hill is not from nature, it's an artificial place built in 1973 by the founder Lady Penh. There's a story in past in 1972, Lady Penh found 4 statues of buddha in Korki Log drifting from somewhere at the river. She asked people to help build this hill to keep the 4 statues of buddha on the hilltop for the happiness and healthy of the people. They named the hill Phnom Daun Penh just after Lady Penh's name and now called Wat Phnom Daun Penh or Wat Phnom Historical & Cultural Tourism Site. This video is showing around the hill, the temples, the souvenir stall, the trees, and tourists coming to Wat Phnom.
