Pattaya, Wat Phra Yai temple, Thailand
Wat Phra Yai temple, Big golden Buddha, Pattaya, Thailand 2010 - Big Buddha hill, big Buddha statue
On the very top of Pratumnak Hill, between Pattaya and Jomtien Beach, you can’t fail to notice an enormous 18 metre tall Buddha popping up through the trees. This Big Buddha – the largest in the region – is the highlight of Wat Phra Yai, a temple built in the 1940s when Pattaya was nothing more than a fishing village. The Big Buddha is extremely popular with tour groups who love to see the intricate design of the statue and the temple complex, but it is also revered by local people who come to pray at the temple. Despite the crowds, the wreaths of flowers and burning incense create a reflective mood in which to explore the many smaller Buddha statues, partial views of Jomtien Beach, and the pavilion hall which has a beautifully painted mosaic on the walls.

Pattaya is a city in Thailand, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 165 km southeast of Bangkok located within but not part of Amphoe Bang Lamung ( Banglamung ) in the province of Chonburi. The city of Pattaya is a self governing municipal area which covers the whole tambon Nong Prue (Nongprue) and Na Kluea (Naklua) and parts of Huai Yai and Nong Pla Lai. It is located in the heavily industrial Eastern Seaboard zone, along with Si Racha (Sri Racha), Laem Chabang, and Chon Buri ( Chonburi ). The city of Pattaya has a population exceeding 100,000 (2007). Pattaya is also the centre of the Pattaya-Chonburi Metropolitan Area, the conurbation in Chonburi Province, with a total population exceeding 1,000,000 (2010). The name Pattaya evolved from the march of Phraya Tak ( later King Taksin ) and his army from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi, which took place before the fall of the former capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.
When his army arrived at the vicinity of what is now Pattaya, Phraya Tak encountered the troops of Nai Klom, who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met, face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline. He then surrendered without a fight. The place the two armies confronted one another was called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which means the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the city is officially known as Pattaya. For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village. However a change occurred on April 26, 1961, when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who were fighting in the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. From this beginning, Pattaya became a popular beach resort which now attracts over 4 million visitors a year. Fishermen's huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotels and retail stores, including Asia's largest beachfront shopping mall, the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall.
The city ( Mueang ) had 104,318 registered inhabitants in 2007. As with the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, that figure excludes the large number of people who work in the city but remain registered in their hometowns, and many long-term expatriate visitors. Including non-registered residents, the population numbers around 300,000 at any given time. Other estimates put the figure as high as 500,000. Most of the officially-registered Pattaya residents are of Thai-Chinese ancestry. Due to the tourist industry, many people from the Northeast (known as Issan, the poorest region of Thailand) have come to work in Pattaya, and are counted for census purposes in their hometown.
There is a fast-growing community of foreign retirees living in Pattaya. Thai immigration has a special visa category for foreigners over age 50 who wish to retire in Thailand. Pattaya is attractive to many retirees from Europe and other Western countries not only because of its climate and exotic, easy lifestyle, but also because living costs are a fraction of those in Europe, a major consideration for people on fixed pensions or incomes. Pattaya is a seaside resort on the Eastern Gulf Coast of Thailand, about 150 km southeast of Bangkok. Pattaya is mostly famous for its go-go and beer bars, but local authorities have made some efforts to provide more family-friendly attractions and activities. Although the sex industry is still going strong and sex tourism remains the key money earner for Pattaya, the resort also attracts local families and holiday makers from around the world. If you are going to be offended by the sight of fat old men hand in hand with young Thai women, then Pattaya is probably not the place for you.
Efforts by local authorities over the past few years have improved the quality of the beaches, but they are still lacklustre by Thailand's standards, and over-development has long since destroyed some of the natural charms the area once had. However, the plethora of hotels and guest houses, and easy access from the capital and airport, make it a popular weekend getaway. Catering for over five million annual visitors, Pattaya is also able to offer an excellent range of eating options and a wide variety of things to do. Its population is a colourful mix of nationalities and ethnicities from near and far. Pattaya occupies most of the coastline of Bang Lamung District (one of the eleven districts that comprise Chonburi Province). This article only deals with Pattaya proper, which spans the areas to the east of Naklua Beach and Pattaya Beach, plus the Buddha Hill headland (which is immediately south of Pattaya Beach). Jomtien is covered in a separate article and contains Jomtien Beach and the areas east of it, including Dongtan Beach. The beaches of Jomtien are much broader and generally in a better shape, and the atmosphere locally is more sedate and family-oriented than at Pattaya.

Thailand - Ko Kha - Phra That Lampang Luang Temple
Wat Hong Thong Temple, Song Khlong, Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao,Thailand. ( 6 )
Wat Hong Thong Temple, Song Khlong, Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao.
It is called Wat Hong Thong which means the Golden Swan in Thai. I found this Temple somewhat amusing at first because at first sight it resembled a pier theatre, I expected someone playing the organ while rising from out of the floor. But when there, I found it an unusually serene Temple, with the structure being built over water. At the far end there is also a memorial for Prince Chumphon who is considered a patron saint for fishermen. Not many Temples in Thailand are built this way and it was strange to see but a marvellous concept and well worth a visit to this Temple. If you wish to travel by car, you need to drive down Highway 3 from Paknam or Samut Prakan. You need to go past Bang Pu Seaside Resort and also the fishing town of Klong Dan. A short while after the town, just after you cross the border into Chachoengsao, you will see a sign for a road on the right that leads to Wat Hong Thong.
Having visited this Wat some 6 years ago in 2009, I decided to see how things had changed. Some boardwalks had been added to make walking round safer and better. But the main work going on was the huge building to the right of the old temple structures.
This new addition is very large and must be costing a huge amount of money. The site was still under construction and therefore many cement trucks builders material were being delivered the day I went there. However you can see from the photos its a structure that will greatly add to the attraction for visiting this beautiful and unusual temple set in the lovely province of Chachoengsao.
The day I revisted was 15th March 2015 the same day I visited Wat Saman Rattanaram on the Bang pakong river and Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan temple. It was a busy day trying to get round all the attractions.
However I went by my friends taxi so he did the driving and knew ( this time ) where all the places were. This time I went inside many of the temples buildings I did not see last visit. The Chinese section of this temple was big and attractive, and went up three floors. So a good viewing point was to be had at the top floor.

WAT SAKET - Golden Mount Temple - Top Ten Tourism in Bangkok Thailand [HD]
Wat Saket, popularly known as the Golden Mount or ‘Phu Khao Thong’, is a low hill crowned with a gleaming gold chedi. Within, the 58-metre chedi houses a Buddha relic and welcomes worshippers all year round. The temple also hosts an annual temple fair in November, which lasts a week during Loy Krathong.
The temple grounds feature mature trees and typical Buddhist structures such as the main chapel, ordination hall and library. Its origins can be traced back to the Ayutthaya period (1350- 1767 AD) and it underwent major renovations during King Rama I’s reign (1782-1809).

★ ★ ★ วัดอินทรวิหาร - Wat Intharawihan (Mahanikaya) ★ ★ ★
Wat Intharawihan (วัดอินทรวิหาร) or written: Wat Indraviharn, Wat Luang Pho To, Wat Rai Phrik, Wat In Thon Wihan, Wat In Bang Khun Phrom,Wat Bang Khunphrom Nok and Wat In, is a royal monastery of third class, in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (กรุงเทพ) and is nearby to Banglumpoo (บางลำภู), Khao San Road and Khaosan.
- Location:
The Wat is at the northern edge of the Banglamphu area of Phra Nakhon, Bangkok. Access to the temple is by boat along the Chao Praya River close to Thanin Wisut Kasat. Road access is through local transport. The northbound Samsen road leads to this wat, which is hidden below the elevated expressway. Also called Wat In, of the late Ayutthaya Kingdom , when it was called Wat Bang Khunphrom Nok for the name of the suburb where it is located.
- History:
The Wat is a royal temple categorized as Class III, which was built at the beginning of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, and was originally called Wat Rai Phrik Vegetable fields Wat. It was so named as its was surrounded by vegetable gardens. The land where the temple is situated was provided by Rama I to accommodate prisoners of war. Vajiravudh refurbished it with the help of Anouvong of the Kingdom of Vientiane, whereafter it was known as Wat Intharavihan. Chao Inthwong also brought a priest from Vientiane to preside as the abbot of the temple. The temple then was given a new name as Chai Inthawong.
- Features:
- Buddha statue:
The Wat's main architectural depiction is a 32 metres (105 ft) high, 10 metres (33 ft) wide standing statue referred to as Luang Pho To or Phra Si Ariyamettrai (Maitreya). Building the Buddha statue was started in 1867 and it took sixty more years to complete it in 1927. The image is made of brick and stucco. Ajon Toh, the then Abbott of the temple was the inspiration to build it. He died at the foot of the image in 1871 when it was being built. A gilded bust of this abbot is enshrined at the temple entrance.
The Buddha image is carrying bowl and stairways at the sides to the back behind the statue provides access for devotees to paste gold leaf on the statue. The image is called Luang Phor To. In 1982 during 200th anniversary of the establishment of Bangkok city the image was refurbished and fitted with Italian golden mosaic tile. The statue which is decorated in glass mosaics tiles is gilded with 24-carat gold. The topknot, called ushnisha, of the Buddha statue contains a relic of Gautama Buddha that was given as a gift by the Government of Sri Lanka.
The enshrinement of the relic in the ushnisha was done by Prince Vajiralongkorn, the knot was placed in 1978. In 1982, during 200th anniversary of the establishment of Bangkok city, the image was refurbished and fitted with Italian golden mosaic tiles.
- Temple:
The temple has an ordination hall called the Ubosot (prayer hall) also known linguistically as Bod. Its architecture reflects the style followed during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It was refurbished in 1982. Italian marble is used to decorate the lower part of the hall and the walls are decorated with traditional paintings. The sema boundary posts marking the limits of the Ubosot are mounted over small naga images. The murals on the walls have the theme of the daily life. There is also a practice at this venue to make and sell amulets.
An image of Phra Puttahachan, who was an abbot in the temple is enshrined in a separate newly constructed chamber in the temple. The image is made of wax and is placed over a spring of water. Water collected from various regions of Thailand is preserved in containers placed in the shelves in the chamber. Air conditioning is provided to preserve the wax image. The same is dimly lighted and devotees do meditation here as it has a special ambiance.
- Guanyin shrine:
There is another shrine here dedicated to Guanyin, a female form of Avalokiteśvara, a bodhisattva of Mahayana Buddhism.
- Worship:
Devotees who visit the temple for worship offer mackerel, a boiled egg and a garland of flowers which they place with reverence at the foot of the Buddha image.
Wat Intharawihan is also close to Bang Khun Prom Palace, Bang Bua Thong Railway Station, Democracy Monument, Vimanmek Teak Mansion, San Chao Chui Bo Niao (ศาลเจ้าจุ้ยโบเนี้ยว, เจ้าแม่ทับทิม), Phra Ratchawang Dusit, Rongphayaban Wachira (โรงพยาบาลวชิระ).
The school is Rongrian Wat Intharawihan (โรงเรียนวัดอินทรวิหาร).
