In the second of my interviews in Chiang Mai, I ask a novice monk questions about the path he chose to follow. The interview was recorded at Wat Phra Singh monastery in Chiang Mai, which is home to more than 300 Buddhist temples.

Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai

Wat (temple) Phra Singh in Chiang Mai was built in 1346 and sits inside the medieval moat. It's a thriving community center, as well as a functioning temple that hosts meditation retreats (and shelters stray dogs).

Chiang Mai has an ancient, intricate culture: from exotic temples to friendly bar girls. Obedient, well-behaved kids, amazing flowers, and warm, friendly smiles. This channel is devoted to showing what it's like to live in Chiang Mai.

Wat Phra Singh is officially known as Wat Lee Chiang Phra and is the community center of the old city of Chiang Mai. The temple was orginally constructed in 1343 AD to house the relics of Phaya Kham Fu, the sixth ruler of Chiang Mai, and is famous for originally housing the Jade Buddha which is now located at Bangkok.

Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai, Thailand is perhaps the second most venerated temple in Chiang Mai after Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. It houses three main structures, the main attraction being the elegantly decorated Lai Kam assembly hall and its restored murals depicting the lives of locals hundreds of years ago. Another favourite is quotes of wisdom all over the grounds.

WAT PHRA SINGH (วัดพระสิงห์) & SP CHICKEN - #014 - AMAZING CHIANG MAI

It is episode 14 of Amazing Chiang Mai and we start the day at SP Chicken. A very famous little restaurant that sells grilled chicken in the old town of Chiang Mai.

Right across the street is the impressive Wat Phra Singh (วัดพระสิงห์)temple. This royal temple of first grade is a must see for every tourist in Chiang Mai and anyone interested in Lanna and Northern achitecure. It also houses the famous Phra Puthat Si Hing Buddha image.

Not far from Wat Phra Singh is the Akha Ama coffee shop where we stopped for a coffee break. After that we visited the temples Wat Si Koet (วัดศรีเกิด) and Wat Thung Yu (วัดทุงยู) because they are located right next door.

This is a very straight forward episode of my my Chiang Mai vacation trip last December.

Made my way to the nearby temples in Chiang Mai, namely Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. Wat Phra Singh has been known to be one of the oldest (or the oldest) in Chiang Mai (or in the country). Constant renovation and restoration efforts are always done to these man-made wonders as time tries to eat them away.

Chiang Mai Attractions - Wat Phra Singh

The Wat Phra Singh Temple is in the district of Chiang Mai and houses the ashes of King Kham Fu. The temple was built by King Pha Yu. The temple also has the distinction of having been the residence of the Emerald Buddha which was later moved to Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

Wat Phra Singh-This temple contains supreme examples of Lanna art.(วัดพระสิงห์)

This temple contains supreme examples of Lanna art. A chedi was first built by King Pha Yu (r.1337-55) to house the bones of his father King Kam Fu (r.1328- 37). The original name of the temple was Wat Li Chiang Phra but this was changed to Wat Phra Singh when the Phra Sihing Buddha image was first housed there in 1367.

The temple was almost certainly abandoned before Kawila re-established it by building the ubosot, and rebuilding the chedi. Chao Thammalangka (r.1813-21) and his successor, Chao Kham Fan (r. 1821-1825) further added (or rebuilt) the Viharn Lai Kham and the elegant scripture library building. Further renovations were carried out in the 1920's when Khru Ba Srivichai supervised the construction of the present main viharn and rebuilt the chedi. The ubosot and scripture library were renovated in 1929.

The recently restored Viharn Lai Kham is a classic example of a Lanna style viharn and was built to house the Phra Sihing image enthroned inside. Lai Kham refers to the elegant gold tracery used for decoration. The front of the building is in three tiers. The portico has finely carved gables as well as an ornate stucco sum above the main doors.

On the inner walls of the Viharn Lai Kham are some murals originally commissioned by Chao Thammalangka. These are famous for their period style and the detail depicting earthy northern Thai scenes and the ways of the Burmese Court.

The murals show two fables. Prince Sang Thong of the Golden Conch lies on the north wall and the Heavenly Phoenix takes up the south. The fables illustrate the long suffering of heroes fighting against the powerful forces of evil before Indra intervenes and allows good to ultimately triumph.

Recent restoration has removed the earlier restoration of the 1920's to show clearly the original style of the work. Much of the detail has been lost, however.

The north wall shows work done by a Chinese artist whose likeness is found in a small picture at the top in the middle of the wall.

Directly to the east of the main chedi, the wooden ubosot has ornate carvings around its doors and stucco patterns on the wooden pillars. The ubosot, which is usually locked, contains a tower-like shrine known as a mondop. The shape of the shrine was said to be similar to an earlier structure that used to stand in Wat Phra Yeun, Lamphun.

The small scripture repository - ho trai - in the north-east corner is the finest of its type in the north. It sits atop a raised base decorated with stucco Devas. The upper wooden structure is decorated with carvings and stucco and is covered in glass mosaic and gilded lacquer.

At the back of the compound are the temple administration buildings, monks' kuti and a small hall contains a reclining Buddha.
