Der Wat Phra That Hariphunchai ist direkt im Zentrum der historischen Altstadt von Lamphun gelegen. Der Wat Phra That Hariphunchai war der wichtigste Tempel des Mon-Königreiches von Hariphunchai.
Er ist sehr groß und hat zahlreiche Bauwerke aus verschiedenen Epochen.
Der Legende nach gründete König Aditya Ratcha den Tempel, um eine Reliquie des Buddhas aufzubewahren, die er vergraben im Garten seines Palastes fand. Im thailändischen Volksglauben wird der Wat Phra That Hariphunchai mit dem chinesischen Tierkreiszeichen des Hahns in Verbindung gebracht. Der Wat Phra That Hariphunchai im Lanna-Stil wurde an der Stelle eines Mon-Tempels aus dem 9. Jahrhundert erbaut und beherbergt eines der wenigen erhaltenen Beispiele der Mon-Architektur in Thailand.
Um die Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts wurde der Tempel renoviert und um einige Gebäude im Lanna-Stil erweitert. Reise durchgeführt mit Berge und Meer.

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is a Buddhist temple in Lamphun, Northern Thailand and another personal favourite.
The temple's origins date from the 11th century but the central stupa is thought to originate in the 9th century.
The earliest origins of the Wat were in 897 when the then king of Hariphunchai is said to have built a stupa (now the central stupa) to house a hair of the Buddha.The present compound dates from 1044 during the reign of King Athitayarai
The temple was later rebuilt in 1443 by King Tilokaraja of the Lanna kingdom based in Chiang Mai. The restoration of 1443 enlarged and enhanced the central stupa, including the incorporation of repousse Buddha images on bronze sheets affixed to the stupa bell element. These repousse Buddhas are indicative of the Lanna Early Classic period.
In the 1930s temple renovations were made by the northern Thai monk Khru Ba Sriwichai

Though essentially a suburb of Chiang Mai now, Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in the area and is home to some ancient buildings, relics of the old Hariphunchai kingdom. During my stay, I was able to visit the shrines Ku Chang and Ku Ma, as well as temples Wat Jam Thewee and Wat Phra Hariphunchi Woramahawihan.

So, I got really lost one day outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and decided to just go with it. Found the ancient city of Lumphun 30km out of town. Highway 11 was a bit of a test for the 125cc scooter, but she did well.
The ancient city of Hariphunchai was founded in 750 CE, and while only bits of the ancient infrastructure remains, there are some lovely bits of the old wall and moats left. The many old temples make for a nice lazy afternoon away from the craziness of Chiang Mai. You will be hard pressed to find another foreign tourist here.
