Wat Phummin
Most famous wat in Nan city Thailand is Wat Phummin was constructed in 1596. It is the only temple which was built as if it were on the back of two immense snakes (or Nagas). Each of the four entrances is preceded by a small corridor topped by a finely decorated point shaped structure (underlining the royal origin of the temple) and is equipped with smoothly carved doors; with Chinese demon guards in the East, flowers in the North and forest life motives in the Lanna style in the West and South. The great murals of the local life of the time when they were painted by Thai Lue artists during the restoration of the temple at the end of the 19th century. The two most famous scenes are of greater dimensions than the majority of the other paintings: a man whispering to the ear of a woman.

This beautiful temple was built by an order of Chao Jettabutrabhrama in 1602 A.D. after he ruledNanfor six years. Its name was originally “BhramaTemple” but it later called inaccurate toPhuminTemple. Its unique design makes this temple become the most interesting temple inNan. The reason is the style of main building which is both ubosot and vihara (Buddhist monastery) that is really unique northern architecture. It is believed to be the first 4-portico vihara inThailandthat has built like it’s on the back of two Nagas. Inside are full of fascinating Lanna architectures and arts. The main pillar stands in the center of vihara has four Sukhothai style Buddha statues placed on the base facing off each four directions of the vihara that stands crossing east, west, north and south. No matter visitors enter which entrance they will face the beautiful Buddha statue’s face. The doors are delicately carved in splendid designs by Lanna craftsmen. This temple is also a home ofThailand’s famous ancient wall murals called Pu Man, Ya Man which appears on the wall paintings, in Tai Lue style. It is considered highly valuable. It depicts legends concerning the Lord Buddha as well as local legends and the local way of life including native attires, weaving and commerce with foreign countries. Archeologists believed that these beautiful wall murals were created during the major restoration in 1867.

Nan: Slow Life Zone
Located in the remote Nan river valley, surrounded by forested mountains and bordering Laos to the east, Nan remains off the tourist trail for most, but those that do make it here get to experience a province and people steeped in history, with a rich and unique culture and some of the regions most spectacular and un-spoilt natural scenery.
Nan’s unique cultural legacy is clearly visible in the city's art and architecture, particularly in the abundance of exquisite temples dotted around the city. Perhaps the most famous of all Nan’s temples is Wat Phumin, which is celebrated for its beautiful Lanna-style murals, considered to be some of the finest examples in the country.
Another temple not to be missed is Wat Phra That Kao Noi, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounds. For the perfect photo op, we would recommend coming in the evening so you can enjoy beautiful sunsets that bathe the valley below in a beautiful golden glow.
Nan is also famed for its centuries old tradition of longboat racing, with races typically taking place in September or October when water levels are at their peak. Fun on the river can however be had all year-round with rafting and kayaking trips, ranging from short samplers to two or three day all-inclusive trips readily available. So grab a paddle and head on down the Nan River for a fun-packed experience that you won’t soon forget.
Just over 10 percent of Nan's population is hill-tribes, and special excursions to traditional villages can be easily arranged and are in our opinion, certainly worthwhile. Pa Klang Hill Tribe Village, about 69km from Nan city is a popular choice and is home to Meo, Yao and Thin hill-tribes. As well as getting to meet the villagers and gaining a unique insight into their daily lives, you can also buy local hand-made crafts, which make for perfect gifts and souvenirs.
Nan’s historic isolation, convergence of different cultures and beautiful natural setting makes it a truly unique and inspiring destination, so why not come and indulge yourself in one of Thailand’s most romantic and undiscovered provinces?

Saturday Evening Market Nan Thailand August 2014
Saturday Evening Market Nan Thailand August 2014. Saturday evening market in the city of Nan used to be located at so called Walking Street, Sumon Thewarat Road, near Wat Hua Wiang Tai temple [วัดหัวเวียงใต้]. This is the market you can see on the video. In 2015 it was moved near Wat Phumin temple, where, in my opinion, it lost its charm. From what I’ve heard it was moved because of some financial issues.
At the market you can try a variety of Thai and Northern-Thai dishes, buy some clothes and all you can expect from a market in Thailand.
Little-known Nan is a very peaceful province in Northern Thailand in the remote valley of Nan River. It is about 600 kilometers from Bangkok. It borders with Uttardit, Phrae and Payao provinces and Sainyabuli Province of Laos. The province is subdivided in 15 districts: Mueang Nan, Mae Charim, Ban Luang, Wiang Sa, Na Noi, Thung Chang, Pua, Tha Wang Pha, Ma Muen, Chaing Klang, Santi Suk, Bo Kluea, Chaolem Phra Kiat, Phu Piang, and Song Khwae.
There are many interesting tourists sites - King of Nan's Teak House, Nan National Museum, Wat Phumin and more. Nan is famous for its longboat racing festival held every year in September/October.

Filipina Blogger Found the Best Temple to visit in Nan Thailand
Earth visited temples in Nan Thailand and thought the Wat Phumin Temple is the best in Nan, Thailand. It is a royal temple located in the old city called Tambon Nai Wiang and is next to the Nan National Museum. The temple was constructed in 1569 and renovated in 1867. What I love best about this temple was the painting inside the assembly hall. The mural paintings or Hup Taem depict the Buddhist Jataka stories. There are also interesting depiction of the lifestyles of the people in town during this time in the paintings. The most popular painting in the temple was the Nan Couple whisper into my ear the couple is said to be not of Nan heritage but are actually foreigners as the costume / clothes they wore in the painting reflects the popular styles in Europe during that time. This Nan couple image can be seen all over the city and is now an iconic symbol in town.

Wat Nong Bua in Tha Wang Pha district of Nan Province was built in 1862 during the reign of King Rama V. It was built by Tai Lue craftsmen who had migrated here from Southern China. Inside the temple there are wall murals that were believed to have been painted more than one hundred years ago. Their artistic value and degree of perfection equal those at the more famous Wat Phumin.
