Why Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) is a must see | CAMBODIA
Another one of our life bucket list stops the Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Needless to say we had an absolutely incredible time visiting the Khmer Hindu and Buddhist temple ruins.
Things started off in Phnom Penh where we caught the Cambodia Post VIP Van for $11 USD each to get to Siem Reap. This is the site we booked our Cambodia Post VIP Van tickets from:
They have a variety of routes and departure times. We found Cambodia Post VIP Van to be a pretty cheap and convenient way getting from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, then using a tuk tuk for the remainder of our journey to get to our accommodation.
The ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap via Cambodia Post VIP Van took about 3 hours in total including a quick lunch stop and there were tuk tuks waiting around for us to get to our final destination (our Airbnb accommodation in Siem Reap) that ended up being just a few minutes drive away.
Our accommodation in Siem Reap was an urban studio located in the peaceful Kandal Village. The place was clean, stylish and comfortable. It's situated above Khmer 652 - a Cambodian restaurant that serves very delicious Khmer cuisine with super lovely staff. There are a handful of other cafes and restaurants nearby as well as local craft shops too.
Khmer 652 is owned by the Airbnb hosts so you also get a 10% discount for dining there. Our favourite meals during our time in Siem Reap were at Khmer 652 as well as Crane just at the back of their alley. We loved the location of our accommodation in Siem Reap because it's also in close walking distance to a supermarket, the river bank and the very lively Pub Street.
After a quick haircut and a browse around Kandal Village we got some rest before heading over to the Angkor Wat temple complex the next day. We opted to get a personal tour guide which turned out to be one of the best decisions ever.
Sarak was our tuk tuk driver and Angkor Wat travel guide, recommended to us from a fellow YouTuber friend. Sarak took us all around the amazing temples in the Angkor Wat temple complex, visiting the lesser-known and secret quiet areas (as well as the main temples too). He even took it upon himself to help us take some beautiful photos with our phone during our entire time together too. He was a driver, travel guide and photographer all in one!
Get in touch with Sarak:

If you're wondering how to get to Angkor Wat, we definitely recommend going via tuk tuk with Sarak to enjoy the open air ride and if you want to go to the quieter spots like we did, simply let him know.
We bought a 3-day multi-pass to visit the Angkor Wat temple complex. First day we had Sarak and on our subsequent visits we had Mr Bean (Sarak's business partner) take us when we filmed Peter's Part 2 for his how to retire early series and on the final visit we went via Grab tuk tuk ourselves just to Angkor Wat. We were in Siem Reap visiting Angkor Wat during November. Btw, make sure to keep your Angkor Wat tickets with you as this gets checked at various entry points into the temple complex.
We visited the following temples:
- West Gate
- Angkor Thom
- Preah Khan
- Ta Prohm (also known as the Tomb Raider temple)
- Bayon (and then finally...)
- Angkor Wat
We also enjoyed a breath taking sunset away from the crowds at Srah Sang.
If you're enjoying our videos please remember to hit that thumbs up and leave us a comment, we really enjoy hearing from our viewers :) Plus if you're new to our channel, we hope you'll subscribe and turn on notifications so you can stay up to date with all our latest videos each week. We post a new video every Sunday ;)
Thank you :D

Pin Peat in Ang Chek Ang Chorm temple (Siem Reap)
To know more about Cambodian music:
Facing the royal palace of Siem Reap, along the National Road 6 is a sanctuary containing two Buddha statues in the position of abhaya-mudrā, defined position of the hand representing the absence of fear, peace and security. They were discovered in the 1950s. They are considered as two sisters: Preah Ang Chek the eldest and Preah Ang Chorm the younger. There are many legendary and real stories around them. Popular belief sees them as representations of two Angkorian princesses!
Both statues are venerated by both Cambodians and Thais. Believers come here to influence the future of their lives (luck, money, health, work, child ...). For this they pray, make requests, offerings of various natures sold behind the temple (Flowers, incense, perfume, light, fruits, various foods, money, music, liberation of sparrows ...) and promises of new offerings in the temple if the first ones are granted.
Today popular belief regards these two entities as the protectors of the city of Siem Reap.
Another statue is found in the middle of National 6, under a large sacred tree. It is, according to the belief, Ya Tep. This entity is today considered as a Neak Ta, a protective tutelary entity. According to belief, it even helps in the prediction for the lottery! This statue looks like that called the leprous king originally on the eponymous terrace in Angkor Thom. But it’s actually Yama, the god of death. Today the original statue of Yama is at the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh and that in situ is made of cement.
The Pin Peat Orchestra plays every day of the year. Several teams of musicians take turns. Unlike the Pin Peat set of the Vat Bo pagoda ( widely deployed, this one is reduced to its simpler expression: xylophone (roneat aek), gong chime (kong vong thom), barrel drum on support (sampho), pair of barrel drums (skor thom), oboe (sralai thom). Like the material offerings cited above, music is supposed to flatter the hearing of divinities and to give them pleasure. Daily, the Pin Peat ensemble is used in Buddhist pagodas, at the royal court to accompany the Ballet, in the shadow theater or the masked theater.

Chaiyam and pin peat ensembles in Wat Preah Prom Nath. Siem Reap
To know more about Cambodian music:
Wat Preah Prom Nath, Siem Reap. November 2015.
This ceremony is named Thot Kathin. It is a Buddhist festival which comes at the end of Vassa, the three-month rainy season retreat for Theravada Buddhists. It is a time of giving, for the laity to express gratitude to bhikkhus (Buddhist monks). Lay Buddhists bring donations to temples, especially new robes for the monks.
The Buddhist community turn around the pagoda clockwise before entering the building and offering their gifts. This dexter circumambulation is a legacy of Hinduism.
Two musical ensembles play at the same time without coordination (polymusic): chaiyam and pin peat. Chaiyam is composed of 1 long goblet drum (chaiyam), 1 bossed gong (kong mong), 1 fiddle (tro sau), 2 goblet drums skor daey. The pin peat is very minimalist: 1 xylophone (roneat aek), 1 gong chime (kong vong), 1 oboe (sralai touch), 1 small barrel drum (skor sampho), 1 big barrel drum (skor thom).

Visit the temple in Siem Reap province - Bakei Cham Krong Temple
What to do in Siem Reap? Our simple way is to go for breakfast and get ready to visit the temples. We traveled to Angkor Wat temple, parking our van and walked to a nice angle in front of the temple for taking some beautiful photos. We then continue to the next and nearby Angkor wat temple along the road to Angkor Thom. It's Baksei Cham Krong temple. It's my first time to stop by this temple so we spend more time looking around and more photos and videos. It's one of the most beautiful and amazing temple at Siem Reap province in Cambodia.

Phnom Kulen National Park, Waterfall, and Temple Adventure trip 2019 in Cambodia...
A playground for locals, Phnom Kulen (literally Mountain of the Lychees) is a gorgeous day out. The main attraction is the waterfalls at the top of Kulen Mountain and it’s also a great picnic spot; well set up in Cambodian style with hammocks and shelters to keep you shaded from the sun. It’s around 1.5-2 hours drive from Siem Reap and if you go all the way to the top by van or car, you need to get there early, as the road is one-way traffic only.
The birthplace of the ancient Khmer empire, it is said that it was at Phnom Kulen that King Jayavarman II proclaimed Cambodia’s independence from Java.
Additionally it’s a very sacred site with multiple temples easily accessible. Two sites most noted are the Thousand Lingas at Kbal Spean, within the Kulen National Park site and Preah Ang Thom pagoda with its giant reclining Buddha. The area is a magnet to “kru khmer” (natural medicine doctors), and attracts people seeking blessings from its holy waters, particularly the potent life-giving waters at Kbal Spean, that are said to help couples conceive.
Phnom Kulen is 48km from Siem Reap and can take 1.5-2 hours to reach by car or van, longer by tuk tuk but then that will only be if you want to walk up and back down again (approx. 2 hours each way, and absolutely stunning) as tuk tuk’s aren’t capable of making the steep journey to the top.
The ticket office is at the bottom of Phnom Kulen and is the entrance to the Phnom Kulen National Park. It is here that you need to pay for your ticket (Only foreigner), if you didn’t buy it in town, and show your tickets to go through. There are good toilet facilities here.
Phnom Kulen is within the Kulen National Park, which requires a separate ticket to the Angkor Archaeological Park. It’s $20 per person if bought at the gate at the entrance to the mountain but you can ask your guide or driver to obtain tickets for you in town, from the City Angkor Hotel for a reduced rate. Cambodians can enter for free.
If you’re going to the top of the mountain by car, van or moto, you need to go up before 11am. The road is one-way traffic only and the traffic going up finishes early, so don’t be late!
From the ticket office, it’s another 20 or so minutes of windy roads until you reach the top, where there are lots of markets selling souvenirs, clothing, snacks and drinks. From here you walk the rest of the way, following the grand staircase up to the pagoda or the lower path that leads to the waterfall and the picnic areas.
A taxi/car for the day is around $50 and vans from $60-80

Siem Reap - Cambodia
Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត) is the largest[1] Hindu temple complex in the world, situated at Angkor, Cambodia, built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation -- first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia,[2] appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means City Temple; Angkor is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagar (नगर). Wat is the Khmer form of the Pali word vatthu, meaning temple grounds. Prior to this time the temple was known as Preah Pisnulok (Vara Vishnuloka in Sanskrit), after the posthumous title of its founder.[3]
Angkor Thom (Khmer: អង្គរធំ; literally: Great City), located in present day Cambodia, was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by king Jayavarman VII. It covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north. The last temple known to have been constructed in Angkor Thom was Mangalartha, which was dedicated in 1295. Thereafter the existing structures continued to be modified from time to time, but any new creations were in perishable materials and have not survived. In the following centuries Angkor Thom remained the capital of a kingdom in decline until it was abandoned some time prior to 1609, when an early western visitor wrote of an uninhabited city, as fantastic as the Atlantis of Plato which some thought to have been built by the Roman emperor Trajan. (Higham 140) It is believed to have sustained a population of 80,000-150,000 people.

Water festival Cambodia 2018
Here's some video taken during the Sraung Preah water festival of Cambodian New Year 2018. The footage was taken in Sieam Reap's Pub Street on Sunday April 15th. I used my GoPro clone to shoot most of the footage and as a result it's only video as the waterproof housing muffles and sound recording. I got totally soaked but it was so much fun and I hope gives a more first person view of the festivities. I'm not sure how important this is to the Cambodian people as a part of the their New Year celebrations, but it certainly seemed to be popular with everyone, from children to even the more senior adults. Of course it has also become a favorite of visiting overseas tourists, especially the younger western tourists who have probably also experienced the Thai Songkran festival. More recently they have added cornflour to the mix and now also throw cornflour over the participants, creating a rather sticky mixture. Seeing Pub Street the following day I believe it will take a few days of cleaning to bring things back to normal once the holiday is over.
For the first part of my SE Asian trip I arrived at Siem Reap, Cambodia for the first month. Staying in a great budget hotel very close to the city center, the Lemongrass and Ginger hotel is well worth considering if you're planning a trip to Siem Reap to visit the famous Angkor Wat temples.
