Wat Sa Si, Sukhothai
Wat Sa Si it located about in the center of the historical old city of Sukhothai, Thailand. Besides a stupa and a splendid sitting Buddha Image, there is a most photogenic Walking Buddha Image (likely a more recent addition). Wat Sa Si is located in the middle of a small lake, splendid surroundings.

Sukhothai historical park Thailand, 2007, Wat Sa Si
Wat Sa Si (Thai: วัดสระศรี) is a small temple close to Ramkhamhaeng Monument. Wat Sa Si is beautifully situated in the midst of Traphang-Trakuan lake northwest of Wat Mahathat. Due to its location, the temple is one of the most beautiful place in Sukhothai. The temple has a Lanka styled stupa. The vihara of Wat Sa Si is situated on the east side of the stupa.
The Sukhothai Historical Park (Thai: อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย (Pronunciation)) covers the ruins of Sukhothai, which literally means Dawn of Happiness, capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now the north of Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name.

Sukhothai (Thailand) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Sukhothai in Thailand.
Sukhothai, ‘Dawn Of Happiness’, this, the name of the first capital of Thailand, once marked the beginning of a new epoch. During the course of its one hundred and twenty year flowering period several of the city’s impressive buildings were created such as the magnificent Wat Mahathat Temple.Beyond the old city walls is the fascinating Wat Si Chum Temple which owes its national fame to the huge seated Buddha sculpture of Phra Atchana that is more than eleven metres high and is one of the largest and most imposing Buddha statues in Thailand. Picturesque yet almost sad the century old ruins seem to be reflected within the water of the nearby moats, canals and ponds yearning for a bygone time when the area was full of buildings that in turn were full of life. But despite its continuing decay Sukhothai is still a truly magical experience.

Speedy Wats Sri Svaya, Sa Si & Si Chum Sukhothai, Thailand
We continued zooming through the important sections of Sukhothai via tuk-tuk to Wat Sri Svaya, Wat Sa Si and Wat Si Chum. Temples constructed in Angkor Wat style with Khmer temples, Wat Sri Svaya perched on an island and a major highlight, Wat Si Chum.
Wat Si Chum is awe inspiring with the very massive sitting Buddha image and graceful hand that adorns much literature about Thailand and Sukhothai. Done with Sukhothai, it was off to the bus station and our next destination, Lampang, Thailand's third Historical City.

The Phra Acana Buddha image at Wat Si Chum
The most striking feature of the temple is the large solid building (mondop) at the rear of what remains of the main prayer hall. A single narrow slit, almost the full height of the mondop, is all that pierces the structure. Through this narrow entrance, you glimpse the serene face of a single large seated Buddha image that almost completely fills the space enclosed by the building. The mondop once had a roof, but it is now gone, so the interior space is open to the sky. The walls of the mondop are much thicker than they need to be. This is because there is a narrow, cramped passageway between the outer and inner walls. The corridor was lined with depictions of the life of Buddha (the Jataka), and allowed devotees to climb up and around the image. Small openings in the inner wall allowed people to get a small glimpse of just one part of the image. The Ramkamhaeng National Museum is attempting to replicate this experience in the museum.
The Buddha image is itself quite striking, and not just for its setting. The image is known as Phra Acana, which means 'one who is not frightened' or 'unperturbed'. The fingers of his right hand, which is extended down to summon the Earth Goddess, are long and delicate. They have been, of course, covered in bits of gold leaf by contemporary Thais. According to legend, a Burmese army invading Sukhothai fled at the sight of this image

The Wat Phra Phai Luang
Is located near the Sanluang gate in the North city wall, just outside of the old walled town. The temple dates to the end of the 12th century or early 13th century before the founding of the Sukhothai Kingdom, which makes it one of the oldest monuments in Sukhothai.
It is believed to have been founded during the reign of Angkor King Jayavarman VII, who built some of Angkor’s most impressive monuments including the Bayon temple. The Wat Phra Phai Luang was built by the Khmer when the Sukhothai area was an outpost of the Khmer empire. It was the center of town in the pre Sukhothai era and the most important temple of that time.
The large temple is built on a square area surrounded by a 600 meter long moat, its buildings aligned on an East-West axis. Since its structures were built during different periods, the temple shows the evolution in Sukhothai architecture and art. It contains examples of different architectural styles such as Khmer, Sukhothai and Ayutthay

Tourist WAT SA SI in Sukhothai
Wat Saphan Hin - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
On a hill overlooking the old city stands one of Sukhothai's most beautiful Buddha images, the Phra Attharot Buddha of Wat Saphan Hin. The temple's name means stone bridge, which comes from the slate stone pathway that makes the climb to the top of the hill only slightly easier.
The temple dates to the mid 1300’s and was commissioned by King Ramkhamhaeng
The path is about 300 meters long. There is a stone platform with a small square chedi(stupa) on it, about two-thirds of the way up.
My only companion to the ‘summit’ was a local dog on this bright, cool, almost autumnal day, just after sunrise……

Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat is the most important and arguably the most impressive temple in the Sukhothai Historical park. The name of the temple, translates to Temple of the great relic.
Founded by King Sri Indraditya sometime between 1292 and 1347, Wat Mahathat was the main temple of the city and the Kingdom of Sukhothai. The deasign of the temple is based on the Mandala, representing the universe, with the principal stupa (chedi), built in 1345 to enshrine relics of the Lord Buddha. This is surrounded by smaller stupas in eight directions. Four of these show Khmer influences, the other four, reflect the Lanna style. On both sides of the principal stupa are two 9 metre high standing Buddha images, known as Phra Attharot.........
Wat Sri Chum - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
วัดศรีชุม
Wat Sri Chum is located north of the old city walls and is part of the UNESCO Sukhothai Historical Park and was built in the late 13th century.
The temple of the bodhi tree (the Bodhi Tree was a large and very old sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as the Lord Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment) features a large solid building (Mondop) with a single narrow slit at the front, rising almost to the full height of the structure. Through this narrow slit can be seen a huge image of the Lord Buddha called Phra Achana, which means 'one who is not frightened' or unpeturbed'
The mondop once had a roof, now gone, so the interior space is open to the elements.........

I. Wat Sasi ( Walking Meditation at Wat Sasi )
The first wat I visit in the Sukhothai Historical park is Wat Sasi. It is surrounded by water. I cross the bridge to the wat. There is a lone pink lotus floating to one side. I stop and write something about it. (Link: What did I write?) On the island, a crowd of tourists surround a statue of the Buddha doing walking meditation. I pass by it for the time being. I head toward a second bridge. The second bridge leads to yet another island. The ordination hall for the wat once stood here, but little of it remains. Stone steps lead up to paving stones and crumbling columns. Little else remains, except a fine view of the bridge and the Buddha hall with a praang standing behind it.

Three impressive prangs from the Khmer era, and predating the Kingdom of Sukhothai, are the main feature at Wat Si Sawai. Some of the stucco decoration is still well preserved.

Wat Chang Lom - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
วัดช้างล้อม
“The temple surrounded by elephants” is not strictly within the confines of the Sukhothai Historical Park, being located a little way from the Kamphaeng Gate entrance to the old city.
Wat Chang Lom, though , is a definitely worth a visit.
The temple is dominated by a Lanka-style Chedi (Stupa) and dates to the late 14th century. The ruins are surrounded by a moat, and contain numerous foundations of smaller chedis, a vihara and an Ordination Hall. The striking bell-shaped stupa stands on a square brick base surrounded by 32 elephant sculptures…….
