Wat Saphan Hin - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
On a hill overlooking the old city stands one of Sukhothai's most beautiful Buddha images, the Phra Attharot Buddha of Wat Saphan Hin. The temple's name means stone bridge, which comes from the slate stone pathway that makes the climb to the top of the hill only slightly easier.
The temple dates to the mid 1300’s and was commissioned by King Ramkhamhaeng
The path is about 300 meters long. There is a stone platform with a small square chedi(stupa) on it, about two-thirds of the way up.
My only companion to the ‘summit’ was a local dog on this bright, cool, almost autumnal day, just after sunrise……
Wat Saphan Hin, Sukhothai
Wat Saphan Hin is the most interesting and also most challenging to reach old temple in Sukhothai, located a few kilometers west of the historical park.

วัดสะพานหิน Wat Saphan Hin Sukhothai Historical Park-Motorcycle Tours
Wat Saphan Hin (Thai: วัดสะพานหิน) or Wat Taphan Hin (Thai: วัดตะพานหิน) is located on the 200 metres hill above the plain of Sukhothai. The name of the temple means Stone Bridge Monastery, since there is a slate pathway and staircase in front of the temple complex. In various stone inscriptions found in Sukhothai, this temple was also called Wat Aranyik, and since Wat Saphan Hin and Wat Aranyik are only about 500 meters away from each other, so perhaps originally a single temple. When Ramkhamhaeng invited a learned monk from the distant Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of present-day Thailand to become Sangharaja of Sukhothai, he built Wat Saphan Hin with beautiful vihara for Sangharaja to reside. The temple also has a large 12.5 meters tall standing Buddha image named Phra Attharot. Another large Buddha image was found in mid-20th century. The image has features of Dvaravati style, but more likely made in the 8th century in the kingdom of Srivijaya.

From the Buddhist temple complex, Wat Saphan Hin (วัดสะพานหิน - monastery of the stone bridge; also: Wat Taphan Hin, วัดตะพานหิน) only the ruin remains. It is located in Sukhothai, province of Sukhothai in the northern region of Thailand.
In the various stone inscriptions, which left the Kings of Sukhothai, this temple was called also Wat Aranyik. Today's Wat Aranyik and Wat Saphan Hin - both are only about 500 meters away from each other - were possibly originally a single temple.
- Location:
Wat Saphan Hin is part of the history park of Sukhothai, located in wooded hills about 2 km (as the crow flies) northwest of O city gate (ประตูอ้อ - Pratu O) outside the old city (Mueang Kao - เมืองเก่า) of Sukhothai.
Sukhothai historical park, Wat Sa Si, Thailand
Sukhothai historical park Thailand, 2007, Wat Sa Si
Wat Sa Si (Thai: วัดสระศรี) is a small temple close to Ramkhamhaeng Monument. Wat Sa Si is beautifully situated in the midst of Traphang-Trakuan lake northwest of Wat Mahathat. Due to its location, the temple is one of the most beautiful place in Sukhothai. The temple has a Lanka styled stupa. The vihara of Wat Sa Si is situated on the east side of the stupa.
The Sukhothai Historical Park (Thai: อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย (Pronunciation)) covers the ruins of Sukhothai, which literally means Dawn of Happiness, capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now the north of Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name.

Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
Wat Mahathat is the most important and arguably the most impressive temple in the Sukhothai Historical park. The name of the temple, translates to Temple of the great relic.
Founded by King Sri Indraditya sometime between 1292 and 1347, Wat Mahathat was the main temple of the city and the Kingdom of Sukhothai. The deasign of the temple is based on the Mandala, representing the universe, with the principal stupa (chedi), built in 1345 to enshrine relics of the Lord Buddha. This is surrounded by smaller stupas in eight directions. Four of these show Khmer influences, the other four, reflect the Lanna style. On both sides of the principal stupa are two 9 metre high standing Buddha images, known as Phra Attharot.........
Wat Sri Chum - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
วัดศรีชุม
Wat Sri Chum is located north of the old city walls and is part of the UNESCO Sukhothai Historical Park and was built in the late 13th century.
The temple of the bodhi tree (the Bodhi Tree was a large and very old sacred fig tree located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as the Lord Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment) features a large solid building (Mondop) with a single narrow slit at the front, rising almost to the full height of the structure. Through this narrow slit can be seen a huge image of the Lord Buddha called Phra Achana, which means 'one who is not frightened' or unpeturbed'
The mondop once had a roof, now gone, so the interior space is open to the elements.........

Sukhothai, Outside the Historical Walls - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
During our ride from the Vieng Taiwan Sukhothai Guesthouse to the Sukhothai Historical Park, the tuk-tuk driver tells us that everything is organized differently as in Bangkok. One does not bargain with the drivers, here you have fixed prices. A trip in the historic old town costs THB 50.-, around € 2.-. Also, you can book tours, e.g. for 4 hours. Unfortunately, we do not know the price anymore, but we think it was THB 300 (without guarantee). In any case, it is cheap and worthwhile. We accept the offer and agree on a tuk-tuk tour the next morning.
We arrive on time and the first stop on our tour is
Wat Si Chum is surrounded by a wide moat and accessed via a wooden bridge. Already from afar we see the Mondop, a huge stone block. On the sides are the remains of former assembly halls with further Buddha statues.
Only when approaching, you can recognize a gap at the front of the Mondop. Behind is the a huge Buddha statue Phra Achana. The name of the Buddha image means, one who is not frightened. The statue is 15 m high and 11 m wide.
The outer walls of the Mondops have a thickness of 3 m. In the interior, which is reached by the narrow passage, one can hardly grasp the dimensions, since the room is very small. Probably, the Mondop once had a wooden roof.
The Buddha statue makes an elegant impression. Primarily the gold-painted hand hanging down. It is among the most popular photo motives of Sukhothai. King Ramkhamhaeng mentioned the Buddha statue already around 1290.
We continue our tuk-tuk tour. We are fascinated by the cows that live peacefully live in symbiosis with the herons between the temples.
On a small detour to a temple within the historic walls, we reach
King Sai Lue Thai founded Wat Sorasak in 1412. This is documented on a stone inscription in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. The author was presumably an envoy of King Intharacha of Ayutthaya. He should protect the interests of the king against the vassals.
The Chedi was built in Sinhalese style, also referred to as Sukhothai style. This is supported by a square base, decorated with 24 elephant statues. One has the impression the elephants carry the Chedi on their backs.
After a short stay we continue. Already from a distance we see

Wat Si Sawai is one of the oldest temples in the Sukhothai Historical Park, having been founded at the end of the 12th century or early 13th century and before the coming of the Sukhothai Kingdom.
Initially the temple consisted of three prangs, constructed by the Khmer as a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva.
The prangs were left unfinished and were only completed during the Ayutthaya era in the 15th century they were finished in the Lopburi- style. At this time the temple adapted to the needs of the Buddhist faith, with a Vihara being added to the south if the cntral prang.
These prangs are adorned with stuccoed carvings of several mythological creatures like the multi headed Naga serpents, Makaras (a sea creature) and Kala, a mythological monster like creature without a lower jaw often found depicted on temples in Angkor.
Wat Si Sawai, Sukhothai
Three impressive prangs from the Khmer era, and predating the Kingdom of Sukhothai, are the main feature at Wat Si Sawai. Some of the stucco decoration is still well preserved.

Wat Chang Lom - Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand
วัดช้างล้อม
“The temple surrounded by elephants” is not strictly within the confines of the Sukhothai Historical Park, being located a little way from the Kamphaeng Gate entrance to the old city.
Wat Chang Lom, though , is a definitely worth a visit.
The temple is dominated by a Lanka-style Chedi (Stupa) and dates to the late 14th century. The ruins are surrounded by a moat, and contain numerous foundations of smaller chedis, a vihara and an Ordination Hall. The striking bell-shaped stupa stands on a square brick base surrounded by 32 elephant sculptures…….

Wat Saphan Hin - Sukhothai
It will take a bit of an effort to get to Wat Saphan Hin. By bicycle, when coming from the east (Sukhothai historical city) follow road 12 for about 3 kilometers, turn left into a secundary road when you see a sign pointing to the temple. When entering the road, there is a booth where you can pay the entrance, basically for Wat Saphan and for all the temples in the western section of town. Following this road and later on turning counterclockwise into the direction of the old city, you will pass about 10 old ruins. Wat Saphan is likely the most interesting (and possibly only interesting) temple to visit. But anyway, once you are in this part of Sukhothai's old ruins, you may as well have a look at the other wats around.
Wat Phra Bat Noi - Sukhothai Historical Park
วัดเขาพระบาทน้อย
The Wat Khao Phra Bat Noi is a small forest temple on top of a hill near Wat Saphan Hin. Monks would come here to practice meditation in a tranquil forest environment. A most beautiful spot, set in a quiet leafy forest with only the birds as my companions....
Standing on a laterite platform are two chedis and a viharn. Set on a square base is a well preserved chedi with niches that enshrined images of the Buddha. In the front of which are the remains of a viharn. Behind the first chedi stands an large octagonal chedi, of which the upper part has collapsed. Scattered along the grounds are small meditation buildings large enough for one monk practicing meditation. Several footprints of the Buddha sculpted in stone were found at the temple, which are now exhibited in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.
